It's very cold outside here in Colorado today, the wind is blowing and I just want to curl up in a ball and sip a hot drink but I was wondering what your favorite hot drink recipes are.

They can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

So what and delicious conconctions have you come up with or have used for years that you love?

Hot chocolate with a bit of peppermint schnapps is really fabulous on cold days. You just can't beat it. It's the alcoholic equivalent of a warm hug.

I say there's nothing like a Soy No Water Chai Latte. I work for Starbucks currently and really enjoy these. The Chai Latte is concentrated Chai tea, with half water half steamed milk, and is good in itself. Switch to soy, which has some vanilla in it, and take out the water and you have a kiss of festivity and a caress of the holidays in your cup.

The favorite drink in Detroit is hot Vernor's Ginger Ale.

Standard northwoods hot toddy. Very strong tea (I like to use Earl Grey) a shot of whiskey, a dollop of honey to taste, sprinkle of mace, a clove and a cinnamon stick.

(some put in a bit of anise, but I've never cared for it)

Hot chocolate (go with the good stuff, and nothin' funky, like raspberry or cinnamon) with a bigger dose than you think you want of Grand Marnier or kirschwasser. Best toddy you can get, and totally simple.

My favorites

Clear apple cider (or juice) heated with some red hot candies melted into it. Tis yummy, cheap and easy.

Hot chocolate with mini marshmellows (maybe add some Irish creme and use whipped cream instead of the marshmellows)

Hot lemonade (you can add a bit of burbon if you want, Instant toddy type drink ;) )

another hot chocolate lover, checking in... if you use real chocolate (i.e. buy a lot of chocolate bars and melt them), it tastes even better! mmmmm...

*goes off to make more hot chocolate*

I can beat that drink, katie!

Hot chocolate (made the hard way with real shaved chocolate, etc...not the powdered stuff) with more than a bit (a shotglass or two) of butterscotch schnapps. If yours it the alcoholic equivalent to a warm hug, mine's the equivalent to a hot fu...::notices forum, abrubtly changes the last word::...kiss.

My favorite is hot coffee with a slug or two of Bailey's Irish Cream. Yummy.

I really love hot lemonade. It is especially nice when you have a sore throat. You take some fresh squeezed lemon juice and freeze it into and ice cube tray. Then, whenever you want a glass, you take out two or three cubes, add hot water, then add honey to taste. Yummy.

Plain milk, heated, with a splash of vanilla essence. Great late at night if you're having trouble sleeping.

cazzle, I do that but with about 11 anise seeds...read it in an herb book I have. It tastes good and I guess the anise seeds have calming properties.

OK here's a good warm weather beater.

Buy some cinnamon sticks and put them in Catain Morgans Spiced Rum over night. Take them out, dry them.

Now heat up some apple cider, throw a shot of the rum in it, and then put a cinnamon stick in there.

OOOHHH!!!!WHAT A GREAT DRINK AFTER A DAY OF HARD CORE SKIING!!

Even better - for a cold/flu or just as a nice drink - go for hot lime with honey. Just squeeze half a lime into a cup and add hot water and honey to taste. To make it even limier drop the squeezed rind in for a while as well. You can also add a couple of slices of fresh ginger.

It's also nice if you forget to drink it and it cools down. And when cold, is probably one of the few things that makes echinacea palatable.

PS: I know we're on hot drinks - but in keeping with the wintry theme - for those that are using echinacea liquid (which is so much more potent) try an "echinacea slammer." Swill the foul stuff down in one mouthful, then bite onto a wedge of citrus fruit. It really, really helps the taste go away! As well as your cold/flu!

Mexican Hot Chocolate.

It's called Ibarra chocolate. It comes in blocks, and you need to chop/shave the chocolate. I add a few tablespoons of the chocolate to whole milk, then steam it on the cappuccino maker (if you don't have a cap maker at home, use a blender). It's so lovely and rich.

Another one for hot chocolate...

But it's best with a blob of fluffernutter instead of marshmellows, because it melts faster. Also a tiny pinch of cinnamon in it is good too, but too much will ruin it.

With Rumplemintz as the liquor, I have heard this called a dirty girl scout. Presumably due to a taste reminiscent of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies.

There was also a drink I've had called a Tilton Hydraulic Pancake, involving coffee, maple syrup, Bailey's and Kahlua that was pretty good.

Hot chocolate (I'm cheap and lazy and prefer Swiss Miss over all that chopped/shaved chocolate nonsense) with Aftershock (cinnamon liquor) in it. Can't beat it with a stick, baby!

Good old-style Irish Coffee.
(not made with Bailey's, that's the easy way ;) )

2 cubes of sugar
about 6-8 oz of coffee
1 shot whiskey
(note: DO NOT use scotch. Just trust me)
a good size dollop of freshly whipped cream
(I like to whip mine with a wee bit of ammaretto)

Good whipped cream should drift down through the glass like the bubbles in Guinness.
