If any other Dopers are sports card collectors, then you know that the latest rage in the hobby is "game-used" cards--ones that have a piece of a jersey, bat, stick, etc. on them. Now obviously they are made by taking said item and cutting them up into pieces and mounting them on the card.
My question is this--what do they do with the rest of it?
Your average card contains not even a square inch (usually) of whatever it is that's on it. Obviously, a professional team jersey could be cut into thousands of these swatches. Yet, they usually make no more than a few hundred of the card, and some are even limited to less than 100 or even 50.
Does Upper Deck have a warehouse full of cut-up sports equipment?
What do players think about this trend? Are they bothered about their stuff getting cut up? I mean, it's easy to take a broken bat or hockey stick and cut it up, but some of the stuff seems kinda special, like all-star game jerseys.
