Our newest asshole, gl0worm, appears to have sabotaged the banner ads in the following threads.

http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000489.html

http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000529.html
http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/001003.html
It has also started the following thread in GD as a pitiful attempt to debate the merits of banner ads.

Anybody care to place bets on how long it will take him to get banned?

oh jeez! ok let me try to clear myself up...i wasnt out to destroy anything, or mess anything up big time (i wouldnt know how even if i wanted to do it, which i dont). i didnt totally screw something up on the boards! what i did was a really simple thing that anyone could do, and i think you should at least note that if i was seriously out to mess something up, i would have like covered the whole board with a black layer or [i]something![/u] i was just making a debate and people freaked! and who knows, maybe the SDMB can now make it where poeple cant do that anymore, i just had to point it out (i dont know!) and so people dont bash me for this, i have to say: i dont claim to be some great computer genius so dont start in on that. i know it was simple what i did, thats all i know how to do! and as for WHY i did it, ill clear it up i hope: when i first came here, i saw it said html was on, so i was like i wonder if i can put elements outside the text box that they give us to write in. i wasnt sure if the css would work or not so i just wanted to find out. it worked, yay, personally i think thats pretty cool. NOW if i had messed up peoples posts by covering them up or something, thats different to me, that would be wrong in my opinion.

whoops i forgot to turn off the italics, sorry! see how little i know about this stuff! also one other thing...someone pointed out to me yesterday that how would i feel if someone screwed up my boards. in all seriousness, i would probably make a special board so people could play around and do stuff like that. but if it happened on another board yeah i wouldnt like that, and i would shut them down. which is what happened and i definitely understand that (but theres still part of me that is like "it was just an advertisment!") but all in all, i think it was a pretty good debate, i mean a whole other board was created because of it! even if it was just to bash me.

What an incredibly self-involved child.
Don't mess with the furniture. Don't mess with the ads. One thread (NOT a board) was started to point out that you were being a rude vandal. Fucking with the ads (which PAY for this site) is not the best way to introduce yourself.
There are any number of other sites on the Web that cater to ignorant selfish children. If you wish to play your little reindeer games you are free to go to any of those. This site is designed for adult conversation about adult concerns. Entering into the room and taking a shit on the floor MAY attract attention to you, but joining in the conversations works better. No one here is interested in how many stupid hacker tricks you know.

Debate? What the hell was there to debate? Do you even know what a debate is?

You know what, worm? I don't cuss a lot. In fact, I believe that you are the first person to bring that type of language out of me in a dog's age. What do you think that says about your little stunt?

Not only are you a vandal, you won't even accept responsiblity for your destructive activities. I don't know which is worse. Why don't you just cease with your pathetic attempts to lay blame elsewhere.
Lick my bag, you slimy annelid.

TUBA, I apologize for the inconvience, but if you feel it is needed please edit out the two offensive words in my post of 10:12 am today.
Thank you, I will try to reserve such displays for the Pit in the future.

Trying to claim you were starting a "debate" after you had been chastised for your vandalism is what I mean by not accepting responsiblity. Additionally, if it were an honest attempt at debate you would have started a single thread and made your proposal. The way to start a debate is no to vandalize several threads. And one more point, over in the BBQ Pit, you claimed you weren't destroying advertising revenue since the advertisement was destroyed in a thread you created and therefore would not have been seen anyway. How does this explain the damage you caused to the existing threads?
Again, be gone, you crap sack.

Worm If you want to start a debate about the banners you can do so without screwing them up. (I figure they pay for the site, so OK by me FWIW) If you want to prove you can mess up the banners, once was enough (...Well actually once is too much).

Well, gl0worm, I'll pretty much echo what everyone else has said.
1) If you want to try to see if you can cover up a graphic on a web page, that's pretty easy to do in a personal web page, without having to do it on someone else's board.
2) If you want to do it on someone else's message board to show off your "skills", I could see that, but you only need to do it once, not all over the place. This message board has a test area! Do it there, and don't do it more than once. Plus be prepared that your test might not be agreeable to the board administrator.
3) If you want to start a debate on banner ads, fine, but you don't have to keep on repeating your little "trick".

Melin: those suggestions are on a par with the recommendation from yours truly to have those cretins get a special member category of "banned" listed under their User IDs!

Are you sure they'll be able to handle it? Maybe we should also call Interpol... and Encyclopedia Brown!

Geeze...The guy said he was sorry, and he admits he fk'd up and won't do it again, so why don't you just drop it?

Huemr: lies an apology do not make. The way it works in the real, adult world is a valid admission of error with contrition and remorse is considered an apology.

Let me also say that this is the only thread I've read on the subject, so my previous post is subject to change.

Huemr: so you're saying that, at present, you're just an ill-informed poster? Doesn't bode well.

Ed, I think this would be an excellent opportunity to try out the technique for tracing a post back to its poster. I'm sure that the ISP for this punk would be happy to pull its privileges (and perhaps its mommy and daddy will spank it and send it to bed without its supper), and with any luck you can probably get the cops involved, too. If it's an interstate thing, hell, the feds might be interested. Geez, there might even be a civil suit in here somewhere.
Could be worth a phone call or two . . . .

Look, OK, I can see that everyone here agrees that only a complete asshole would deliberately try to destroy the SDMB, but this guy gloworm obviously only did it because he could.
Yes he's a crap sack and all of the other colourful expletives that we can collectively produce, but I think he's learnt his lesson. If he does it again, not only is he grade-A stupid, but he's also a totally irresponsible, ignorant, naive, pathetic vandal with nother better to do than screw up everyone else's day.
NOTE - I said IF he does it again.
Until that day, I shall consider him 'forgiven', and I think it's about time everyone else did as well...
