View Full Version : manhattan will co-moderate GQ

Ed Zotti

We're happy to announce that manhattan has been appointed co-moderator of the General Questions forum. He'll share moderating duties with Nickrz, who plans to stick around but wants to reduce his time commitment. We plan to name co-moderators for some of our other busy forums soon. We'd have done it before now, but it wasn't possible until this latest MB software upgrade. If you've already applied to become a moderator, don't worry, we're still slowly trolling through the applications. If you'd like to apply, contact tubadiva@aol.com for more info.

manhattan has been an active poster and we've been impressed by his intelligence, fair-mindedness, and unflappable sense of humor. We're sure you'll join us in welcoming him. And please, go easy on him. We don't want him to quit the first day.

Let me be amongst the first to congratulate Manhattan . . . and also to commiserate.

Ain't the easiest job, but sometimes y'all make it really really fun.

I would say "respect him like you do me," but he deserves better. :)

Congratulations, Manny! Way to go!

Now you get to be the next target for the psycho poster who wants to take out his aggressions on a moderator who deigns to take a position opposite of his!

Don't you feel lucky?

(I'd ask what the ? in front of the message means, whether it's indicative of an uneasy nature in giving Manny this wonderful benny, but I think questioning Mr. Zotti's typing skills is the surest way to get my butt fragged.)

Can I be the first to complain about the standard of Manhattan's moderating? ;)

Congratulations, Manny, it's well-deserved.

For your first trick ... doesn't this topic belong in ATMB? ;)

<blink><font size="5" color="red" face="arial">Congratulations, manhattan!</font></blink>

And to think I was kissing up to you in the posters you'd like to date (http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/004065-3.html) thread before I even knew you were going to be a moderator! That ought to qualify me for some kind of special consideration, don't ya think? ;)

Just kidding, of course. Or wait - maybe I'm not kidding. [kissing up again]Manhattan, oh wise and sensible one (and sexy, charming, and adorable, too), do you think you could use your new position of power to talk the adminstrators into adding a preview option for our replies??? I'm willing to work out a trade. Just name your price.[/kissing up] :D

All kidding aside, I know you'll do a great job for all the reasons stated. Congrats!

Hm. And here I thought I was so clever, being the "first to realize" that there was another name up by Nick's...anyhoo, there's a congratulatory thread started over in MPSIMS (didn't want to sully the GQ forum with emotion).

Congratulations, Manny, quite an achievement.

PS: If they don't hire me, can I have your coffee cup?

And it's not just because adding a "Calavera" to the shortening of his name brings a tear of nostalgia to my eye, either.

Manny --

Don't believe a thing Nickrz has to say about me. Besides, all those posts have been deletes.

Ed Zotti:we're still slowly trolling through the applications.

Not to disrupt the many pleasant (and deserved) congratulations/condolences to manhattan, but was no one troubled by this remark? Will Phaedrus be our new GD moderator? NewtonsApple in charge of MPSIMS?

Oh, the humanity! (text bolding mine, of course)

Yes, tomndebb, I did notice the "trolling through the applications" phrase. Let's hope that the word "trolling" does not bode evil.

But manhattan as moderator meets with nothing but approval here. Of course, we will now need to dissect his posts more carefully for any possible inaccuracy. :)

[Pssssssst...handy!

In real life, manhattan is the Honorable Rudolph Giuliani, Mayor of New York City.

In order to maintain his gruff and wolverine-like public persona, the Mayor uses this message board as a secret outlet for his high spirits, bubbling wit, and rollicking good humor.

Keep it under your hat, huh?]

Thanks for the kind words, all. I’ve archived this thread on my C: drive, so I can pull it out and re-read ot after I do something stupid and you call me out on it. [Smilie deleted for ChiefScott purposes]

I’ll confess that I’m a little intimidated to have my first moderating job in a forum with so many smart posters. That fear is mitigated somewhat by the fact that the tone here is a lot more civilized than elsewhere on the internet, a testament to both to the members and to the environment Nickrz fosters. I will do my best to uphold that. It goes without saying that I’m second banana here, and I’ll be looking to Nickrz for guidance.

Some random thoughts:

It’s pretty clear to me that I got the moderating duties not because I know so much but because I do not. The whole reason I applied for the job is that I have learned so much in this forum that I wanted to give something back. While I’ll pop in from time to time, mostly I will just listen as I always have.

The speed, accuracy and wit with which just about any question is addressed makes this area, IMO of course, the best general information source on the internet. It doubtless makes Cecil’s job difficult in that anyone with an ISP can come here and get the Straight Dope without having to resort to His Correctness. I’ve lurked just about every thread on this forum since I came to the site in July. I hope my curiosity (and knowledge that I don’t know much) will be an asset, not a hindrance.

Nickrz has been pretty ruthless about sending threads elsewhere if they don’t belong here. I intend to continue that practice. But I’m new, and I’ll make mistakes. Don’t hesitate to call me out (or email me privately) if you think I have done the wrong thing.

We have a lot of new members here. Welcome! If you are lurking and have concerns that if you register and post you will be harassed, this is the place to start your Straight Dope career. A person who gets a reputation for being able to help answer people’s questions accurately (or ask a good stumper) is a person who will do just fine.

Bribes: Bribes are accepted, of course. Actual money is kinda icky, so food, good wine, tee-times at any of Golf Magazine’s top 100 courses and, uh, more personal forms of payment are preferred.

Thanks again for the welcome. I look forward to having a lot of fun, and I hope I can help everyone else have fun, too.

I'm not really editing this, so much as adding this sentence to see how it works.

MANNY -- In order to be the first to bribe you, and in the recent spirit of intrigue displayed on the Board, I have left a valuable, ah, gratuity for you to pick up.

Go down the main east-west street in your locale (you know the one), past the shop with two (not three) blue neon "o"s in its sign. Hang a left. Count off four trees on the right hand side and hang another left. That should take you to a park. Head south through the park until you reach the water fountain with the chip in the top left-hand corner. Look directly west from there. See that mailbox? It's under that.

No need to thank me. ;)

Manhattan said:Nickrz has been pretty ruthless about sending threads elsewhere if they don’t belong here. I intend to continue that practice. Then I'll expect to see the "What's Wrong With Atheism?" thread in GD any second now. ;)

I see you've already made use of your moderatorial editing powers. Remember to use your powers only for good, never for evil. Well, ok, occasionally for evil.

Manhattan got the job as moderator, huh? I just knew that the East Coast establishment wouldn't choose, say, Santa Cruz to moderate! ;)

And I can see how, with the way WE are, a whole city can be needed!

Congrats, Man, you do a good job posting; I think you'll do a good job moderating. :)

I'd offer kudos, but I don't want to start THAT war all over. ;)

Ukulele Ike

East Coast establishment? [snort]

I'm actually floored that a Chicago-based organization would select a New Yorker for dog-catcher, let alone a post requiring exquisite tact, sensitivity, and intelligence.

Many's the savage beatings I've risked at the hands of Chicago bully-boys, strolling into their taverns and biergartens, dragging on my cork-filtered Dunhill, glaring though my monocle, and pointing out the obvious to them about their second-city status.

Break a leg Manhattan! Or better yet, break Phaedrus' leg.

And I second the motion for Satan as BBQ pit moderator. That would really add some pizazz to the board. I'd come visit every day. I'd even click on the banner ads every once and a while.

Nice work Manfred! Congrats!

Finally, a member of Our Exclusive NYC Cliche/Clique, a moderator! Mwahahaha! This is the foothold we need to begin Operation Exclude Newbies!

Oh, did I think that or type that? Uh-oh.

You will make a wonderful moderator.

Being a New Yorker, are you going to head up the Moderator Mafia?
