It didn't occur to me until too late that I'd be working on day two of a perfectly good four-day weekend ... what's your excuse?

Everyone loves to go to Disney today. Someone has to be there.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm here.

What? This is the easiest money I'l make all week. I cleaned up yesterday!

Hell, I was at work yesterday and I'm here today. Do I get double martyr points?

My excuse: a) It's a Thursday holiday, how bloody useless is that, b) It was hotter than liquid flarn yesterday and being in the AC'ed office was nice, and c) I now get to float my holiday pay to our Xmas shutdown and not use a vacation day then.

Well, if you call it working, I'm here. I'm not doing anything, since this is my last week at this job before I move to Washingotn DC. So far this morning I've played a game, made fun of my supervisor, and am halfway through a cup of coffee. My plan for the day is as follows: Nothing. Followed by lot of nothing. I think I'll do lunch a little early, come back a little late, and do some more nothing.

Ahhhhhh.

I'm here. Sorta. I normally telecommute, but this week and next I had to go into the office. Boss's boss told him all of us could work from home, so I'm here mostly hanging around in case something happens.

I'm here. Al of the lawyers are out, but I (and the rest of the support staff and paralegals) can get lots of work done with fewer interruptions. Not to mention I wopn't have to make so many pots of coffee!! And hey, we just might order pizza in today.

And I was grousing about not having the day off, but I've changed my mind: working today with yesterday off is like having TWO weekends in one week (to my thinking, anyway).

I'm here. My employer, a small legal-publishing firm, has very generous vacation benefits - so most of the staff simply used one of their days. But since Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year (Pain. In. My. Ass.), I decided it was more important to save a bunch of days for then.

Staff of eight: two called in, one went home two minutes after she walked in, one's on vacation and another took comp time.

But I'm still here, holding down the fort.

Happy, not happy :(

I had no reason not to come in - with my family headed north and my house more or less clean, all I'd do at home is surf... which I'm pretty much doing here... I did answer a couple of engineering inquiries, and I'm about to complete a revision on a drawing. I have two more inquiries in my In Box - I may get them done too - they look simple enough.

There are only 4 people in our end of the building - normally there are between 30 and 40 of us - so it's very quiet. The phone has rung once - it was my husband.

I'm planning to go out for lunch - I never do that. Yeah, it's a slack day for me. Life is good.

Well, SOMEONE has to keep the hospital running! About half of my fellow pathologists are in today; I just happened to be one of them. Since I was on call yesterday anyway, it's no big deal.

Ehhh I'm here unfortunately. Being a supervisor I must set a good example (unlike my boss who is on fscking vacating). That and the girl who works with me this morning is going camping this afternoon so I told her to take the day off and have fun.

I'm in mainly due to a lack of vacation days. Then again, when you can sit around all day on the computer and not do any work, isn't it just like a vacation day?

Annie-Xmas

I'm here, and I'll be here tomorrow. It's got A/C, AOL and it's payday.

When I was out Wednesday, UPS delivered a very expensive package here for me, and someone signed for it. Lucky me!

I'm here with a skeleton crew. No vacation for me until October, only a third of the staff is allowed off at a time and I was too late with putting in a request.

Coffee. Check.
Computer. Check.
T-1 line. Check.

Okay. I can handle that. The only reason I'm here is because only half of the computer support staff can take a day off at a time....and he got his request in before me. So, here I am, guzzling coffee, trying to wake up. But it shouldn't be too tough. :)

I didn't want to burn a vacation day. I'll put in my 4-5 hours then out. Besides, the AC is cranking in here. I should have come in yesterday!

Olentzero
07-05-2002, 10:09 AM
Oh yeah, I'm in. Skeleton crew here as well, but I got paid today and found out I have 10 more hours of leave than previously presumed. Some small amount of work that needs to be done, but nothing that can't wait until after the DC Lunch Bunch (which, welby, I highly recommend coming to if your job is anywhere near the White House.)

Here. Even my boss took the day off; he's camping with the kids, so it's JUST ME in the office. (Hey, I could work naked today.)

I actually came in voluntarily to get caught up on some research. If it helps, I slept in for an extra 2 hours and I'm probably leaving an hour early. :D

We're a small company and three other people had already taken today off, so I'm here. Besides, it's payday.

Most of us are here (I'm in because I'm saving vacation days), but my boss is letting us out early -- 3:00, if not earlier. Yay!

All of my customers are on vacation, so it's quiet and peaceful today. When I'm not fooling around online, I'm organizing my email folders, which (I'm ashamed to admit) I find relaxing.

I'm here because my company has a rule that in order to get paid for a holiday, an employee must work the day before and after the holiday. What a pain!! :(

Checkin' in. It's a ghost town here in ye olde firm of law. Me and four other assistants on the floor. All working for zero attorneys. Color me confused, but why the hell am I here?!?

There's almost nobody here today. It's blissfully peaceful and quiet. The few people who did come in are in a good mood, totally kicked back. The bosses are all gone. The phone hasn't rung once.

Why would anyone take leave on a day like this? It's like a vacation being in the office!

Lisa Ann
07-05-2002, 11:13 AM
It's payday today and I deliver the checks! There are five people in our building across the street and sixteen including me in this building. I've had two calls. It'll be quiet as a morgue after lunch. I'm closing the lobby at three.

I didn't want to be here...but I figured that a vacation day would be more useful if I was actually going on vacation.
Will try to leave early, though...it's dead as tombs here.

Well, the nature of my job is such that I have to make sure I reschedule and service the stops I missed because of the holiday. Not necessarily today, but soon. And, of course, if I didn't work today, I'd have today's stops to make up, as well.

Plus, my company has a rule that you have to work the day before and the day after a paid holiday (of which we only get about seven) or else you don't get paid for the holiday.

Could be worse. I practically set my own hours, and some days I'm done and home by 1:00 or so.

I'm here. I work in a small accounting firm with about 12 accountants and three partners. Only one partner and two accountants showed up today. For the most part, it's a bullshit day. I've really got nothing to do but somebody had to be here, I drew the short straw. Oh well, it could be worse.

My feelings exactly. Boss is on vacation (and he was working from his home office on Wednesday, talk about bonus!). Phone hasn't rung once, except for Boss just checking in. No problems here.

Yeah, I could be home, listening to the teenager and the toddler shouting "Stop hitting me!" at one another, or Mrs. CaptMurdock grousing about her dad's estate and such.

So nice. I may take a nice long lunch.

Holidays off? Vacation days? What are those? I'm a stay at home mom of three kids, I have no concept of what those things mean, anymore.

To top it all off, school started, for my older kids today...yes, TODAY. It started on 7/5, last year, too, but why on earth would you start the school year off on a friday?!?! I don't get it. Anyway, it was hell morning, after the kids got home very late from their dad's last night, getting them up and ready, and the baby ready, down to the school, check my daughter in at Kindergarten(her first day at Elementary school), while sending my son to get breakfast. Going to the office, finding out my son's room number, and dropping off his meds, only to find out I need a new authorization form...sit there and fill that out, and demand the office staff get it faxed off to the dr, so it will be back in time for him to take his noon dose today. Find son, find his line up spot on the blacktop, wait until he goes into his classroom for the morning, then huff it clear back across the school to my daughter's room to catch up with the orientation, already in progress. Baby is really sick, coughing up a storm, then starts crying, but can't take his bottle cuz he's coughing too much, give up on orientation, come home.

I love my kids to death, but I must admit that old age, and retirement are both sounding mighty good right about now.

I'm not at work yet, but I will be later. It was a surprise to me that I got yesterday off since my "weekend" is usually Tuesday and Wednesday. Most of the staff had to work their regular shift yesterday, but my boss surprised me with a free three-day weekend. I think it's because I've only been here three weeks and he wants to give me extra time to get to know the town. Very cool.

::waves::

Mr. Pol & I had no plans to go anywhere over this holiday - so I saved a vacation day by coming in.

Unfortunately, I'm working with a new tool (Macromedia Authorware) and the people I need help from have taken the day off... so I guess I'll hang around here this afternoon!

I'm here. I only started Monday, so I can't use my vacation time yet. I don't have access to all the online things to do my job, and my boss is out, so the network people set me up with games and told me to have fun surfing, since we technically aren't allowed to, but they are the ones in charge of making sure we don't go online. :)

Everydamnbody else took the day off, some idiot in another state scheduled a worthless conference call for 11:00am - 12:30pm today, my Boss figured I just had to be on it, and as long as I'm here I might as well answer the phones (no one called all damned day).

How's that for an excuse? I did get some work done without all the distractions, though.

Thirty-seven minutes and counting.

Yep, I'm here too. I'm technically too new for vacation (Until July 23) so my boss said if I didn't have out of town plans or anything, I should prolly not take a vacation day.

Of course, I'm pretty much the only one here so who would know if I didn't show up? Meh. Leaving in 20 minutes anyway...came in early.

Worked yesterday - worked today. Yesterday was much better, as no one was around.

Today I got to babysit the whole plant, plus run engine test since none of the operators showed up. At peak afternoon, it was 120°F ambient temperature in there.

Me thinks me needs a few cold beers.

I didn't come in yesterday, but I did come in today, and I did a phone interview with a realtor and voiced a story about immigration rule changes affecting the real estate market, to be broadcast Monday morning. And I got out at 12:45 - not bad since I came in at 9:15.

I'm here. The newspaper doesn't shut down for holidays, and someone had to come in. I'm just glad I got yesterday off. Also I have a regulary scheduled three-day weekend tomorrow through Monday (I have the world's weirdest work schedule), so I don't feel too bad.

And heck, today's a slow day; I'm already done, just kicking back and waiting to get the final edition so I can make sure I didn't miss anything. And then I will go drink beer. Hooray!
