View Full Version : Doperéal (MontrealDope) - Aug. 23-25

I'm starting the definitive Doperéal thread because the other one has far too many pages in order to cohesively plan anything. While it may seem a bit early, LaurAnge and I would like to have everything planned out before she goes to Europe. I'll take care of last-minute things while she's gone.

So far we have a decent list of definite and possible attendees:

LaurAnge
New & Improved Scott
scott evil
matt_mcl
detop
Bryan Ekers
Daerlyn
racinchikki
lno
Maeglin
Elenfair
Hamish
Eonwe - possible, for a Saturday morning activity
Charmian - possible (please come!)
iampunha - possible
andygirl - possible
An effigy of Esprix :D
... and hopefully some of the Toronto Dopers we met this past weekend.

So far I think we're agreed that doing the Labyrinth and strolling through the Old Port would be a fun activity.

Here's what I propose as an agenda - please provide input! :)

Friday, Aug. 23:
For Montrealers and those already in town, drinks at Drugstore in the Village, possibly followed by some clubbing at Sky.

Saturday, Aug. 24:
Afternoon: Biodôme...?
Evening: Dinner somewhere, followed by Labyrinth and a tour of the Old Port, possibly followed by drinks in Old Montreal or something.

Sunday, Aug. 23:
Afternoon: Obligatory brunch somewhere.
Evening (for those still in town): Drinks somewhere - Grumpy's?

Anyway, those are my ideas. Laur, help me out here. :)

And all you Toronto Dopers: You had better do everything in your power to make it up here!

I'm taking in lno, Maeglin, and Elenfair, but there's still room for one in the Evil Bed®... if you so dare.

Right! Let's get this party started! :)

Well, it seems that the Labyrinth is no more.

Suck.

We'll have to think of something else to do, then.

Chalk me up to a maybe. I am planning a trip to Martha's Vinyard, and the dates are still very much in the air, but I'd be up for dinner and boogey-ing. (growing up in Northern Vermont means more school trips to the Biodome and Old Port than I have fingers to count, so I'm out for those.)

What? They killed the Labyrinth? Those bastards! I'll make them pay!

. . . .

Anyway. :embarrassed:

I have couchspace. As previously mentioned in the other thread, it fits one person of six and one half feet in height or less, two of same if you're friendly, or innumerable midgets. Sadly, my bed is not available. :D

Perhaps "effigy" was a bad choice of terms. What I meant was, a small stuffed animal or something that will attend all events, representing your presence in spirit. :) (In the previous thread, you said you wanted to go with a :( ... So this will mean we'll be thinking of you. :) )

Ugh. Well we'll have to think of something else, then. Maybe dinner, a stroll around the Old Port, and drinks in Old Montreal would be just fine.

Now we have to think of restaurants: one for dinner Saturday, and one for brunch Sunday. Ideas? Laur, Daer, anyone? We can always do Mövenpick again for brunch...

Just NO EGGSPECTATIONS, please. Overrated.

And I think a stroll along the Main & St-Denis is in order, perhaps on Sunday after brunch.

Elenfair

Oo!

A stroll down St-Denis is a necessity :)

Lookin' forward to the Dopereal festivities... :)

Will I have to crammed into a car for 6 hours this time around?

And also, can we "drop" lno into some Quebecois food. "This is lno in the poutine, and here he is in a tortiere!"

If I may make a suggestion for Sunday brunch. Since a stroll along the Main and St-Denis seems to be the activity, why not a dimsum in Chinatown ?

Why does this sentence gives me a vision of lno swimming in an Olympic poll sized plate of pig knuckles and meatball stew ?

It was a clown car! A clown car!!!! (Referring to TorontoDope.)

We've done lno (well, so to speak). Besides, lno will be here in person. Our mascot this time will be Esprix, and it's a little stuffed animal bunny of mine, so no stains!

detop: Dim Sum creeps me out... I say Mövenpick for brunch...

Any ideas for dinner on Saturday? Anyone?

detop
07-16-2002, 01:07 AM
You asked for suggestions. Mövenpick or another choice is fine with me, as long as it's not Nickels (Céline Dion has enough money, thankyouverymuch and does not need my meager funds).

scott evil

OK are we agreed on Mövenpick for Sunday brunch?

Now, where to go for dinner Saturday?

scott evil
07-16-2002, 04:08 PM
I'm putting forth some options for dinner on Saturday:

- Moe's Deli and Bar (near the Molson Centre): Pretty much a bit of everything - roadhouse-type food.

- Casa Grecque (co-worker says there's one in either the Old Port or Old Montreal): Not really that Greek. Steaks, shrimp, chicken brochettes. Cheap.

- Chez Opal, but it's far too expensive.

- Dundee's (Crescent & de Maisonneuve): A bit of everything.

Suggestions? Concensus? Is anybody awake?

Well, if everyone wants dim sum, then I'll go, but beware: dumplings make me gag and even vomit.

Laur, what do you think of the Saturday resto suggestions? Any other ideas? The place must be relatively inexpensive, with a menu that will appeal to everyone (e.g. nothing like sushi - blech), and able to accomodate a group of 15 or so.

OK, here's one for dinner on Sunday. There is this absolutely wonderful Greek/Italian restaurant on the Plateau (Villeneuve and Jeanne-Mance, not too far from Metro Laurier) called the Terrasse Lafayette. Run by absolutely charming people, huge & delicious portions, and my parents used to live above it. How can you not?!

Well, this is looking relatively possible for me. I've got commitments on both Friday and Saturday night at 8:00, so if there's anything happening on Saturday before 4:00 (gotta give myself plenty of leeway, 'cause I can't be late) or at all on Sunday I can do it.

Sunday: some form of brunch, quite possibly dim sum, even though I stated earlier than dumplings make me vomit.

Later, probably drinks again. I know a relaxed place in the Village that does Karaoke. (Not with the freaky backgrounds like this (http://filebox.vt.edu/users/awitt/money_funny.asx) :D.)

If you want to take Monday off (I will be) you can crash at my place, because I believe lno, Maeglin, and Elenfair will be gone by then.

If matt indeed meant Greek for dinner Sunday and not Saturday, then we'll go somewhere middle of the road Saturday.

Help me out, here. I don't want to have to make an executive decision! ;)

I'm just thinking logistics. If we're going to tour the Old Port & Old Montreal Saturday evening, I think we should have dinner somewhere more central. And since the Greek place is on the Plateau (rather high up, I might add), and we'll be strolling on the Main & St-Denis Sunday, then we'd be in the area.

And in terms of fast food, lunch Saturday (informal) must be at La Belle Province. POUTINE!! :)

Well, I discovered a nice sum of cash today that might make Dopereal a possibility.

Now I just have to figure out how in the BLAZING hell I'm going to get up there. Driving, unless there is someone to drive WITH for a significant portion of the trip, is not really an option because I'm the sort of stubborn mule who would only take three or four breaks of like a minute each. And that could make me possibly end up dead (highway hypnosis, etc).

Anyone wanna meet me halfway, or should I pour some of that $ into roundtrip airfare or a train? (SOME. Not $477, which is what I saw some Montreal tickets going for.)

One of the best places in Montreal to go eat, and get great coffee, is Santropol on the corner of St-Urbain and Duluth. You can walk there from St Denis, it's just at the top of the fun part, and it's got a fantastic terrace that makes me think of a private garden or arboretum. Coffee is cheap and made from fair-trade beans, food is all organic and portions are generous. Vegans and people allergic to anything but wheat gluten are catered to, staff are polite (although slow), but reservations are HIGHLY advisable on the weekend. It occurred to me that I haven't even taken Daer there yet, so if you guys want to fit it into the times I can join you all (either Saturday before 2PM or Sunday) then I heavily recommend you all get a taste of what the Plateau was like before the yuppies moved in!

Yay! I get to see the stunning Charmian again!

The Wonder Woman doll will be attending all events. She's coming out of the closet, baby! ;)

In any case, I've got Friday the 23rd and Monday the 26th off, so those staying with me can arrive and leave whenever. (I believe lno will be arriving the Thursday night.)

Now, let me just tackle this disaster of an apartment...

iampunha
07-29-2002, 09:02 PM
Hmm. Prices for airfare are looking reasonable (under $200 roundtrip), which decreases the odds of me attempting The Road-Trip from Hell (hey, I had to take five friggin' breaks going back to VA from Columbus after ChiDope, and I sure as hell ain't driving down from Canadia after this shindig!).

scott, what time would be ideal for arriving either Thursday night or Friday morning (taking note of the lack of punctuation:))?

scott evil
07-29-2002, 09:43 PM
pun, Thursday night would be better, but Friday morning is do-able. lno is arriving by car Thursday night, so I have to be here to let greet him. If you come in Friday morning, I need to know at what time, so that I can be awake. You'll have to take a cab from Dorval Airport, unless if by some miracle lno and I can wake up and pick you up.

More details to come.

Grrr. Two weeks to go, and no decision on the restaurant for Saturday evening, dagnabbit. I don't want to have to make an executive decision, but if we're going to be a large group, I have to make the reservation within a couple of days.

Dinner Sunday will be at the Greek place. Saturday I put forth Dundee's on Crescent and Moe's on de la Montagne. A LONG TIME AGO. ::fake mad:: We need to decide on a place so I can make a reservation, and so that I can post the itinerary of events with addresses and phone numbers of the establishments, as well as meeting places, times, etc.

I'm out of the loop, so I don't know if these places are still open, but there's Playground on Amherst St., and Sona on Bleury St. It's not my scene, but I can give you my spare keys for when you get back.

I'm also glad you'll be arriving before we all meet up at Drugstore (which, BTW, is close to Playground). Otherwise you'd have had to join us there, baggage in tow. Plus it's outside the "cab-from-airport-fixed-rate-to-downtown ($28)" zone.

I'll be making the reservations for Saturday dinner and Sunday dinner this evening or tomorrow, and will post all relevant info (time, address, etc.) as soon as I'm done.

Bascially, it goes like this:

Friday around 9: drinks at Drugstore in the Gay Village, possibly followed by clubbing and/or embarassing Karaoke at Club Date.

Saturday afternoon: Biodôme, perhaps.

Saturday dinner at Moe's Deli & Bar around 8-ish, followed by a stroll around Old Montreal and the Old Port.

Sunday: dim sum in Chinatown. Meet at the gate to Chinatown (St-Laurent & René-Levesque) around noon. Dim sum followed by a walk up the Main (St-Laurent) and St-Denis.

Sunday diner at Terasse Lafayette on the Plateau (Greek/Italian place matt_mcl has been pimping endlessly) around 6.

Possible Shakespeare in the Park thing in NDG.

Then you all get out of my house and leave me the frick alone. ;)

I need those staying with me who haven't done so yet to email me so I can give directions and establish ETAs. scott_evil28@hotmail.com.

I'll post complete details within the next day or so.

Myself and Palve will be around all saturday and will probably be able to go to the Biodome in the afternoon. Is anyone else doing anything else through the morning?

Not that I know of, but would 1 PM be OK for you for Biodôme?

I've made the restaurant reservations and will post the itinerary in a new thread.

Due to an... accident involving lno, Bunny has been moved to my balcony. It's cement, so she can't jump off. She'll cope, but the balcony is out of commission for a while.

1 sounds good at the biodome... But how will we know who you are? Where should we meet? It's been years since I've been there so I'm not so sure of the layout.
