French toast falls into the catagory of food known as "maple syrup delivery systems" along with pancakes and waffles. What you do to get the syrup to your mouth isn't particularly important.
You must use real maple syrup.

Why? Because it just doesn't taste as good with mustard.

BTW, some people (like in my household when I was a kid), put a little sugar in the egg mixture too, so it was little sweet to start with.

If anybody can get the search function on this board to work, many moons ago, there was a prolonged debate about what belongs on top of french toast. I think the thread was called "French Toast Toppings" and was over in MPSIMS. I think it was the Canadians and Brits who were most likely to use ketchup.

To me Ketchup is syrup. Tomato syrup. I put it on my pancakes and my french toast, but would actually rather have something involving salt and fat rather than sugar and starch. What I can't understand is people putting syrup (i.e. ketchup) on everything.
