It's about bloody time!
The Young Ones - Every Stoopid Episode will be released on DVD on September 17th. Yeah, this one's in the shopping cart! Sure, it's $45. But it's worth it!

Oh wow! Now I won't have to rely on the brief doses I get when I visit my Mom & her satelite tv! (BBC America kicks arse!)
Now if I can just figure out how to afford a dvd player....

That little white dot on the telly is a sign.
It means something.
It means . . . there's no more telly.

Thanks for that good news! My tapes off MTV disappeared years ago, and the price for getting them all on VHS seemed prohibitive. My library's got Fawlty Towers and all the Blackadders, but they don't stock TYO. Forty-five bucks for the DVD seems like a good deal to me even if it's just the episodes, and I assume they'll have at least a few additional features stuck on there.

Of course you'll have to pay! Just a measly 45 bucks for some of the finest comedy ever produced! And your $45 buys you not one, not two, but three DVDs! Why pay sixty dollars or more for a set of four VHS tapes, when you can get the entire series on three DVDs? But wait! There's more! (Well, actually I'm finished with the commercial.) :D
I was re-packing boxes of VHS tapes yesterday. I was hoping I'd come across TYO, but they must be in another box. Now that they're coming out on DVD, I don't have to look for my tapes!
(I did come across David Lynch's short-lived series On the Air in one of the boxes. All seven episodes. Plus The Forbidden Zone and Naked Lunch. :) )

I got the VHS set as a gift a few years back, and I was surprised to see that there was some stuff that MTV cut out, like stuffed animals boinking and a funny bit with a racist cop.

Going on the wish list with major hints being droped to family members.
I haven't see these in years, so glad they're getting a DVD release. It's a great format for TV series, especially sitcoms and sketch shows.
Neil: Uh, Vyvian, can you like, actually kill yourself with laxatives?
Vyv: I don't know, Neil, but I'm going to stick around and find out.
Besides any show that can have Motorhead playing "Ace Of Spades" in the middle of the living room rules.

That's from a Cliff Richard page. I haven't played it yet, as my guitar is at home. I changed the third verse to match the show.
"I think 'Special Patrol Group' is a stupid name for a hamster!"
"Okay, I'll change it, then! Hello, Cliff Richard!"

Has anyone seen The Young Ones (1961) starring Cliff Richard? Would a fan of the television show like it? It looks like just another oldies rock'n'roll teen movie, but according to the review at Amazon, it's "one of the most beloved British movie musicals of all time".

It's not an awful film by any means, but nothing like the television show. Well, maybe if you sat in a really dark room, squinting a bit.

Does it have any extras? Outtakes, interviews, commentary? I don't need it if it doesn't have extras; I have all the (uncut!) episodes on VHS.

"Well it doesn't say, 'Ensure machine isn't full of washing-up liquid'!"
"Well, it doesn't say, 'Ensure you don't chop up your DVD player with an axe! Put all the bits in a plastic bag and bung 'em down the lavatory'!"
"Doesn't it? Well, maybe that's where I've gone wrong!"

Do Americans understand the Young ones?
Are you familiar with the works of Sir Cliff Richard (yes he is a Sir)
or is it like devil woman has never been written?
And it's Toxteth O'Grady (Toxteth is a uber-pikey area of Liverpool that had been rioting when the show was being recorded)

owlstretchingtime: I'd never heard of Cliff Richard before TYO, and I've never seen any of his films or heard any of his music. Still, I think I can say Americans who have seen TYO understand it. I think the humour is more or less universal.
One thing I've wondered though, is how many people will "get" the Thatcher references in a few years? I mean, how many 20-somethings know enough about Nixon to laugh at jokes about him? Or Gerald Ford or Jimmy Carter? Or even Reagan, for that matter?
One thing I find hilarious now is that Neil said, "Bell-bottoms are coming back!" Heh heh. He was right!

Amazon doesn't list any extras. I have all of the episodes on VHS as well, but DVDs are much more convenient. I can always sell the tapes on eBay.

What on Earth do you think Sir Cliff is actually like (I shudder to think!)
All Brits would still get the "Thatcher" stuff because Blair is compared to her so often.
And students are still like that in Britain. Worse if anything.
Has anyone made the stiffy joke yet?

I don't think BBCAmerica is airing The Young Ones episodes anymore, the total & complete bastards.
"Well, alright, but verbatim regurgitation is against my principles."
"I'm asking you to test me on it, not throw up on it."
Ok, so everyone is nostalgic. It blurs your memory.
The series was something I used to love on TV - never missed it when it was on. Always thought of it as being so, so funny, in my head.
I re-watched it again recently, and man was I disappointed. It was cheap, docile, slow, awful humour, so contrived and unfunny.
It had, to me, absolutely no lasting appeal.
My memory of its funniness was finally shot. Same as "Bottom" too.
It will never be in the same classic all-time funny catagory as the likes of Blackadder or Father Ted. But maybe that's just me. :(

No, but I gave him tape 1 for his birthday.
Aro: I'll have to disagree with you. I started watching TYO in the 80s. I watched my bootleg tapes many times. I bought the legitimate VHS tapes and watched them. It still has me laughing.

owlstretchingtime, some Americans had heard of Cliff Richard, "Devil Woman" and "We Don't Talk Anymore" were both hit songs over here. And I think he did make some minor noise over here earlier in his career, a book I've got list a few Top 30 singles in the 60s. Although the scope of his popularity in the UK was probably unknown to most of us, as well facts of his life and career that are probably common knowledge on your side of the Pond.

Sir Cliff is a national treasure or the greatest stain on the country since the slave trade depending on one's point of view.
He is a squeaky clean "family" entertainer who is as famous for his christianity as his music, which is bought by ladies of a certain age.
THus it is funny that a "radical" would be a fan.
I think pat boone is a similar kettle of fish.

What's particularly annoying is when it starts raining at Wimbledon. Invariably, Cliff will be in the crowd, and of course, he'll be handed a microphone and burst into an a capella version of that horrid Raindrops keep falling on my head tripe.
The fascist!

That's the impression I got from the series. :)
(FWIW, Cliff Richard and Pat Boone are both "before my time".)
