Bong Hits and Coughing? (Non-"doper" Dopers need not apply)

Whether it's kosher or not, I figured this was the forum to post this topic.

Why is it that when you take a bong hit, you cough your ass off more than a joint or pipe hit? I take big hits from the pipe and "j" and I don't cough as much. It seems like the pipe or J would be hotter and more irritating to the lungs than the bong, which is supposedly meant to cool down and filter the smoke. And yet, every time I take a big bong hit, I cough like hell.

The only explanation I can think of is that there is more smoke, in turn covering a greater inhalation(surface area), hence causing greater irritation to the lung's mucosal layer and resulting in these unfathomable coughs... ;)

Just a WAG but to my mind the reason you tend to cough more on a bong hit is twofold.
A: the smoke is cooled by the water in the bong causing you draw the smoke deeper into your lungs.
B: you start out sucking against the resistence of the bowl and water then you remove your finger from the carb hole removing the resistence drawing the smoke deeper into yourlungs than normal for a joint or regular pipe.

It could be that you are sucking in more smoke than say a pipe or a J at one time?

WAG from a long time ex smoker, but wouldn't the cooler temp make the gas contract, thereby making it more concentrated and more irritating? Don't know if the temp change would be enough to be significant or not, it'll take one of the physics geeks to figure that out,

Cool smoke causes more coughing than hot smoke. When "my friends" started putting hot tap water in the bong, "they" noticed a significant reduction in coughing.

Regardless, putting a lot of crap in your lungs at any temperature will cause a certain degree of coughing.

My, ah, friend used to manufacture bongs as a hobby. I--he discovered that an ideal setup consisted of two filtration/cooling chambers and a bong-style delivery tube. First chamber is filled with warm water because it filters better. Second is filled with ice water. Delivery tube is ideal when filled with snow. Not an easy setup to travel with, though.

I think that the coughing is due entirely to the large volume of smoke and the duration of inhalation. Smoke by its very nature is an irritant to the sensitive lining of the lungs. I don't think there is an effective way around it, except taking smaller bong hits.

yes...ive heard from "friends" that the more you cough the more you get off. and "my other friends" agree..."they" feel more of a buzz from coughing a lot...maybe b/c "their" brain isn't getting enough oxygen during coughing sessions....

Could be because the smoke does filter out some of the additives and nasty stuff that you are getting a more pure hit of THC (the whole point of a bong). Thus your lungs are not used to such a high level of the stuff which leads to the coughing.

I learned the ideal method of THC ingestion from a family member who did a stretch in county jail: the dope is cleaned of all the "brushwood" and seeds, into a powdery kif, which fills into a small portion of a baggy. This and a small pipe can be carrried between your dick & ball sack (this is for concealment - not for optimum smoking pleasure, unless that's your kink). However: this scaling-down enforces a discipline that enhances your high (not unlike the beauty of the Japanese tea ceremony): due to your need for discretion, you only load a bowl that meets your lung capacity. You inhale it all in one toke AND THEN HOLD IT ALL IN QUIETLY until it's fully absorbed by your membranes, then you exhale nothing more telltale than warm carbon dioxide. The only cleaner hit is to eat the shit.

My WAG is that you're inhaling more smoke- when smoking a J or pipe you're not ingesting 2 feet worth of smoke. The fact that the smoke is cooler may have an effect as well- my friend has found that pipe/J smoke irritates the throat more than the lungs.

Singledad is correct. The ideal temperature for inhaled gas is 98.6F with 100% humidity. Any more or less can and will irritate your airways.

Mechanical ventilators either have heater/humidifier systems or they use filters that exchange heat and moisture. The same holds true for the bong. I have what's called a "health bong". You place warm water in it and it has an impeller run by a 9V motor that breaks up the big bubbles into tiny little ones . No irritating coughing spells.

I asked a freidn of mine who is a non-cig-smoker, and my friend said she always coughed most from a pipe, least from a bong... and only sometimes from a j.

She is very intrigued by the warm/cold water observations here. She always favours hash over weed too.

I think Mojo is right. You simply get MUCH bigger hits off a bong. If you'll notice, you can finish a bongload of weed in about half the number of inhalations that it takes to smoke a pipe bowl the same size.

Gravity bongs give the biggest hits of all. Knock your ass on the floor, they will! It's the only method of marijuana ingestion that's actually made me vomit. (though the bong attached to a gas mask came close!)

Here is my answer to your question. Forget trying to find the best way because you are frying your BRAIN everytime you use pot as well as braking the law. The answer to not coughing your ass off is to throw away the bong and the drugs that are in it and promise to obey the LAW in the future.

A. Did you even read the OP? That wasn't what the question was at all. And you didn't read the topic either obviously.

B. There is a great difference between cheating on a test and smoking pot. Smoking pot was legal in this country at one time and is legal in other countries. Cheating on a test is unethical and is usually illegal.

C. If you're going to deliver a "fry your brain" speech, try not to include so many typos and grammatical errors.

<<Demo, bong hits make you cough more because the smoke that your recieving from the bong is more dense (then from say a pipe/joint), hence it (the thick smoke) irritates the little hairs before the entrance to your lungs, which in turn activates your cough reflex.
I might add that certain types of weed are more irritating, especially the cheap stuff since you have to smoke a lot of it to get a buzz. You could try taking smaller hits too (works for me). <stay high :)

Demo, if you want smaller hits without all the smoke blowing away, try a smaller bong. They have little plastic ones for $5 or $10 at most head shops that are maybe 6" tall. Also, if your bong uses standardized bowls, you can buy one of those little pinch-sized bowls that's only big enough to fit one or two tokes worth of weed.

Also, take your finger off the carb and cover the bowl with the flat side of a lighter or something as soon as you see the bowl is lit. That should keep your hits small and keep a little bit of smoke from blowing away.

Thanks for all the good advice. I actually tried the warm water in the bong and it seemed to work. Do you think this may be because of the higher humidity in the smoke from the steam off the water? Also have tried the smaller hits, but seem to be losing lots of smoke in the translation.
