Getting tired of the same old Honey, Sweetie and Darling, and wondering if you clever people can come up with some unusual pet names. They can be for SOs, offspring, friends, employers, actual pets, or anyone else - it's up to you.

A word of warning: For those who think they have a great pet name for their boss, "Ass-Bastard McTurdpants" is not a pet name.

Let the mushiness begin!

My ex-wife liked being called "Baby Toad." The pet name had no meaning; I just combined the two words and arbitrarily said it would be her pet name (with her permission).

When DrJ's stepping over the line, I usually threaten to call him Snuggle Bunny until he behaves. Do threats count as pet names?

I had a cat at one point in time called Vaska (it sounds like Waxa). It's Russian for black shoe polish. The ex, who still has the cat is Russian and wanted to name the cat since it was compleatly black. I think that's how you spell it anyway, I never had to.

Here are a few of mine:

from an old group of friends, Ribena (short for Ribena Berry)
from my ex-boyfriend, Heffalump
from my dad and my cousin, Bood (originally it was Boodlebum, but fortunately it's been shortened).

I also have a friend whom I call Smurf. The reasoning behind this is that said friend and I had a brief fling a little while back, and I just happened to have a box of coloured condoms in my bathroom cupboard, and for some reason a high proportion of them turned out to be, well, blue...

I think I'd better shut up now :D

My last dog was named Kela... no not after tequila... just seemed to fit her. Had a tortoise shelled kitty I named Kamiko (Kami for short), Japanese for 'daughter of the tortoise'. Had another kitty given to me after a hawk stole its sibling. Named him Tuttle (Tut, or as he preferred King Tut) after the Tuttle Comet that I saw that night.

Have had lots of animals growing up but these were the ones to come to mind that were 'different'... Had my share of Smokey's, Midnight's, Taffy's.... etc...

Usually if you look at a critter long enough, it will tell you it's name.... Odd I know... Perhaps it's just me... Honest, it works...

My nickname is DeBlah blah, or just blah. It sounds like my last name, and I talk alot...
My old dogs name was Prissy, because she was, and my old cats name was Kidney bean, because of her markings.

I call the boy a lot of names. Mainly "Pineapple Butt."

He calls me crazy.

I have a lot of names for my neighbor and vice versa. (We've been friends since high school, so it's not like I haven't known her for, well, a long time.)

I call her: Pinky (The Pink Pants Pirate); Princess Francheska Ronaldi, Demigoddess of Small Woodland Creatures Who Are Horny; Lemur; Peabody; and Wedgie.

She calls me: Evil Incarnate, Monkey, Crackwhore, Minx, Poindexter, She Who Makes Furniture Go Boom (according to her that would be my Indian name), and Glowworm.

I'm sure I use other pet names, but those are relatively tame.

I read in cosmo... (sorry, I work at a drg store and my evil manager decided that we can't bring outside reading material in, but we can read what is already there. Plato's Republic gets left at home, I read cosmo.)

Anyway, the day before I read in cosmo that girls should only give their guy SOs "masculine" pet names, I had christened my SO Chinchilla Head.

That's macho, right?

I call my wife Grace. People who hear me say it think I'm being sweet, but she knows it's just a sarcastic commentary. She tends to be a bit klutzy.

Those nicknames that I have not related to my name:

Muta, mutita, mutín, brujilla, puercaza, and cocoon are the ones my family use.

Caramela was a nickname formed by one classmate back in junior high. My last name sounds similar, and he called me that.

My family got a wonderful golden retriever at the pound at a young age. He was already named from his brief previous owner: Rizzoulli. He looked like a Rizzoulli, so we kept it. Called him Rizzy for short.

Any italian or italian-american dopers out there that can give some insight into what it means?

Harley - as in Davidson, he purrrrrrsss like a mofo.

Ashes - (okey dokie, corny but I was smokin' and the ashes in the tray reminded me of his color)

Hawthorn - named after the street I found him on

Shiva - the Goddess of DESTRUCTION - it fits

Toolbit - he belonged to my uncle, a machinist for NASCAR. After my uncle passed away my mother inherited the him . Shortly afterward, my mother wanted to call him PussyWillow. "Willow" for short. I went ballistic and eventually adopted him.

Blue Balls - a stray - he used to hump my leg (i swear)

I delivered a pizza to this family with a 3 year old girl. Their cocker spaniel was barking and she yells out in a beautiful 3 year old girl voice: "Be quiet Bananas". My heart melted because I knew for sure that they got the dog and let the little girl name her.

I'm a baseball fan and have a Boston Terrier so of course his name is Fenway.

I had a cat once, found wandering for a long time in a friend's apt complex, already neutered. I called him "Cinco" which was shorthand for "sin cojones."

Is this thread supposed to be about interesting names for pets, or interesting pet names for people?

I did call my son "Droolio Iglesias" when he was a baby.

Hers- "Pierre" (does anyone remember the book "I don't care, Pierre"?), "PD" (short for puppy dog), or more often the less creative "Baby Doll"

Mine is "Pale Fox". I had an ex that called me "Boodah Bear".

I still call my sisters "Butt Monkey", but now it's no longer an insult.

I've decided my next three pets will be Carrie, Meg, and Fawn, for "Charismatic Mega-Fauna."

My ex called me "the brainless little onion ring." I really wish I could remember the story behind that one. I don't think it was as strange or kinky as it might sound. ;)

Fairly unoriginal and not having anything to do with her name, my girlfriend's pet name is bunny. As it turns out, she does look a little like a bunnyface, and her nose scrunches up like one:)

When I first started calling her this, it was a bit more complicated, as her MSN name reveals: "cute little bunny rabbit girlface". After a day or two that became bunny (occasionally bunnyface).

Interestingly enough, my mom occasionally signs things to my dad "yr bunnit". No, I was *not* thinking of that when "cute little bunny rabbit girlface" came to mind.

I too, am fairly unoriginal when it comes to pet names. I just call my boy Paddy. Or if I'm feeling particularly cutsie or bunnyish, I'll call him Paddycake. When I miss him he's my cupcake.

You know...now that I think about it...my dad's nickname for my step mom is 'honey bunny'. I can't believe it took me this long to remember it. Eep! *scrunches up her nose*

The Offspring is called "Bunting" or sometimes "The Bunting" from the nursery rhyme "Bye Baby Bunting." This evolved into Bundt Cake which sometimes turns into Cake of my Heart. Sometimes she is called Oigle or Oigle Face, which is what my mother-in-law called cute little kids.

Some of my friends call me Mistress Ballista. Don't ask.

My ex-bf and I named our first guinea pig Polpetta (RIP 1994-1998). Polpetta is Italian for meatball, and our little piggie, having black hair (they have hair, not fur), looked just like a meatball when curled up.

Sometimes I'd call her Poo-pet, because all guinea pigs do is eat and poop.

My family nickname is Beave, as in "Leave it to Beaver." There are two stories as to the origin of that: either because I used to chew on wood (like popsicle sticks) when I was very little, or because of my buck teeth, long since corrected through orthodontia. Everyone in my family calls me that except for my mother, who calls me Sweetheart or My Sweet Baby (even though I'm 30 - I'm the baby of the family).

My nieces & nephew call me Uncle Beave, since they already have an uncle with the same first name as me. They know my real first name, but I prefer being called Uncle Beave.

A variation on that is Beave-Boy.

(God, this is embarassing.)

My sister used to call me Pêche (French for peach) when I was very young, because I had cheeks like peaches. A variation on that was Pêchie-Kins.

My sister used to call my brother Dancin' Lad. I have no idea why, nor do I want to know. She also used to call him Squab. Again, I don't want to know why.

I call my nephew Buddy.

My first bf called me "Goosums McGee" or "Goosie" for a while. I have no idea why. Maybe it's because I used to goose him. :p

Oh, and I call my bunny "Bunny" even though she does have a name, but my stupid best friend (who foisted Bunny on me because he went to Australia) gave her a male first name.

OK, I feel totally exposed and naked now.

My SO calls me Animal most of the time, or Jin, or some version of my name with the letters all scrambled up. He also calls me Girlfriend.

I just call him by his actual name, since that irritates him enough that I haven't found the need for any silly-sounding pet names. Sometimes I also call him Boyfriend. He prefers "Hey you."

My youngest son is often called Bubba because he is a chubby 8.5 month old and just looks like a bubba. Derivatives follow naturaly. Bubba Gump, Chubby bubba, bubba fett, etc.
I had a Pit Bull puppy many moon's ago that I named Dread. My ex made me get rid of it because he used to bite our full grown Husky on the lips and just hang there. The Husky (named Kita) didn't really care and just drug him around the house. If I ever get another Pit Bull, he will be named the same.

scott evil, your bunny should meet our bunny, who is also frequently called "Bunny". Baby bunnies are notoriously hard to sex and this one was named Nightfall, after a female comic character, and then turned out to be a buck. Oh, well. I'm sure they'd get along famously and could commiserate over their ignorant humans.

In keeping with the thread, he is Nightfall the Wonder Bunny, King of Ghosts (after the poem by Wallace Stevens), or Evil Demon Bunny King, when his eyes glow red in the porch light.

My b/f calls me "Kitten" and "Mao-mi" (Cat, in Mandarin. He's Caucasian; I had to teach him that name, but it was his idea originally)

I call him "Golden Bear", a corruption of a name another friend calls him (which I also use), "Golden Boy". He's adopted the name "Kitsune", too, so I also use that.

I call my red Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) "Flammifer", because it sounds cool, it does look like a flame, and that word was in the last line of the Lay of Earendil (AFAIK).
