Stephen Ambrose dead at age 66 (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&ncid=716&e=3&u=/ap/20021013/ap_on_re_us/obit_ambrose).
Whatever his flaws as an academic, the nation owes Ambrose a debt of gratitude for preserving the oral histories of WWII veterans -- particularly those of below the ranks of senior officers. He also made history accessible for those who might otherwise not be interested. He will be missed.
