AAAAACK!
*grabs the hamster and Fed-Exes him to Richard Gere*

Gah, ok you get the quick-n-dirty version of the op.
The only famous non-"white" lgbt person I can think of is Ru-Paul.
There must be others. I had a big spiel about role models for lgbt youth and stuff but to hell with that. For the sake of me not getting murderalised by the mods, please restrict your responses to people whose sexual orientation is a matter of public record.

There's Audre Lorde.

Sorry, that's the only person I can think of off the top of my head.

Author James Baldwin was openly gay.

This site (http://gayinfo.tripod.com/) lists hundreds of people with the proviso "I only mention people who are out or who were outed after their death."

Some people interpret the "friendship" between Jewish King David and Saul's son Jonathan as being more than just friendship. See in the Bible 1 Samuel, chapters 17 through 20 I think.

GASP!

I must say I am shocked and horrified at an Admin no less posting unfounded allegations of a libelous nature on the board.

:D

I just thought up one myself, thanks to mouthbreathers suggestion, Skin from Skunk Anansi. Good stuff :)

Samuel R. Delany, the science fiction author. He's written about it in his autobiography, The Motion of Light in Water.

Josephine Baker (bisexual).

I'm certain there was a fairly well-known gay Japanese novelist, but damned if I can remember his name.

Theres a very famous and popular transexual pop-singer in Korea by name of Harisu. Its very bizarre given how extremely closed minded the majority of koreans are about homosexuality.

But she has many popular albums and lots of fans it seems. I have no idea whether or not she is pre or post op. Though she is extremely feminine looking and almost impossible to tell at a passing or even lingering glance.

Federico Garcia Lorca, Sal Mineo, Tracy Chapman and her partner (who if IIRC is a novelist, but I can't remember her name) -- geez, I have a whole encyclopedia of queer film at home that lists performers and directors who are/were out of the closet. A bunch are "ethnic."

Chief Crazy Horse (Tashunca witco) was said to be queer (I'd have to go hunting for a cite, though I think info can be found in The Spirit and the Flesh: Sexual Diversity in American Indian Culture, by W. Williams).

Italian film director Pasolini was gay and IIRC correctly so was his contemporary Visconti.

Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima was said to be gay.

B. D. Wong, Tony award winner (M. Butterfly), is gay as well.

Does Rudolf Nureyev count? What about Allen Ginsgerg?

Well, there's Little Richard, and there was never much doubt about Liberace.

I have taken for granted for years that Tracy Chapman was a dyke, but never knew she was officially out, now I see it here and also on the site somone mentioned earlier up in the thread.

Great link thanks btw! Seems like I might well be helping the guy to make the whole thing database-based :) haha small world.

How can anyone forget Pedro Almodovar?
