View Full Version : A Very Cranky Ramadan

I'm not muslim but I was grooving on the idea of having friends over in the evening to have dinner, like the Ramadan celebrants around these parts so often do.

So I'm doing it. A potluck at my house this weekend, Saturday 11/23. If you're close enough to drive (or fly, what the hell), you're invited. At least a handful of Michigan Dopers will be in attendance. And one Pennsylvania Doper. And two people who aren't Dopers but know another Doper we have in common (who won't be there).

You can email me if you need details, directions, etc. It's not gonna be a wild party (Cranky Fests never are) but I suspect we'll have fun nonetheless.

And yes, see the sticky above about the fact that the SDMB is NOT responsible for gatherings, face-to-face meetings, etc.

Kyla (or was it Juniper?) dubbed it "A Very Cranky Ramadan" and I dig that name. Zappo has also suggested it be like Festivus, only he calls it Crankymas. So after the feats of strength, I'll tell you how you've disappointed me this year. Whichever it is, I am looking forward to seeing SDMB friends.

So you can impress your guests, it's called iftar (breaking of the fast). You could call yours a Very Cranky Iftar.

You could have another one in a few weeks at the end of Ramadan called a Very Cranky Eid al-Fitr.

:)

I won't be there unless the SDMB is responsible for me breaking stuff.

Really.

Wanders off mumbling about them getting to play musical chairs without me...

Rick and I are bringing chocolate crack, a bottle of wine his parents left here, and something yet to be named.

Looking forward to it, Cranky!

Sounds like a blast. Have a great time. Maybe you could play, "Guess the religious symbol Charades?"

Or something.

Sorry for the bump, but since this event is in two days, I figgered I'd better give people a chance to tell me they are coming.g

I'm going, of course. I mean, if I can't go two miles for a Dopefest, I wouldn't be much of a Doper, would I?

I think I'm going to attempt making asparagus lasagna. We'll see how ambitious I am.

I'm very interested in this chocolate crack that RickQ and Brynda are bringing, too.

RalfCoder, I didn't know you were another Spartan Doper! Glad to make your acquaintance.

Cranky, if I had a car and some way to cook, I'd be there in a heartbeat. As it is, I'm stuck here in E. L., but have a good time, all.

Well, it's iftar if it's at sunset (around 5.30 pm currently here) and everyone is breaking their fast, usually with lentil soup and dates, a strange tamarind or dried apricot drink, and then a goat or lamb roast with all this rice stuff. Plus kibbeh and hummous and moutabel and the whole Arabic buffet shebang.

Later on I believe it's called suhour. Though recently someone told me that supposed to be in the morning (it may be my pronunciation was wrong). Anyway I've been invited to a couple of suhours, and they're all 8.30pm/9.30pm even 10pm ish.

I really wanted to make it and meet some board people, but alas, it's not going to happen. :(

(hijack)
I am having my annual x-mas bash in a few weeks (14th) :), which you all are invited to attend (if there is no official Southern Michigan x-mas gathering). E-mail if interested, with enough encouragement, I may start an X-mas party thread.

Well, I'll be there. What time are we talking about having this shindig? Should I aim for 7, 7:30ish?

This will teach me not to read the boards more often. I could have gotten a babysitter too. I guess it's too late now though. Have fun y'all.

Hi, tsarina. Yup - I've been here on campus for 4 university presidents and (I think) 5 football coaches. Nice to meet you. Maybe it's time to get wring and Bunnygirl and whoever else is local, and do our own lunchdope? E-mail me off-line if you're interested.

One of my best freinds is doing ramadan. Its cool, because apparently she's loosing weight and everything, although she too is a bit cranky. I could live without food for a day, but not water...
and this girl would drink on average like, 5 bottles of water a day. It must be killing her.

This was fun. I give the party an A- (penalized only because it was a Festivus party that didn't have a big metal pole).

But there were Feats of Strength and we DID spend a lot of time telling you how you'd disappointed us this year.

You bastard. You get to take a box of Tastykakes home and you give my party a lousy A-MINUS?!?

This is going on the list of things to talk about (vis-a-vis disappointments) next year.
