View Full Version : Vodka and Orange Juice
Screwdriver, right? My question is, (In your humble opinion) is there anything else one can add to this drink to enhance It? Seems someone mentioned grenadine to me once but I don't think I want the sweetness.
Bored in NC.

that's a tequila sunrise.
if you don't want it sweet, try grapefruit juice instaed of orange juice. it's a salty dog if you put salt on the glass. I think. Other wise it's a vodka grape.

If you put a bit of peach schnapps in it as well, you get kind of a twist on a fuzzy navel.

whoops, it would be a tequila sunrise if you were using tequila. lime and vodak is good too. a bullfrog, in the old days.

Cranberry juice would make it a madras. One of my faves.

Add some Galliano and you've got yourself a Harvey Wallbanger.

I thought a grapefruit and vodka was a greyhound ( I knew about the salty dog), but maybe that's just what my dad calls them. I was sure that there was a name for vodka and cranberry, but didn't know what it was. Hmm! We just call them vodka cranberries.

Vodka and cranberry juice = a Cape Cod.
Greyhounds and Cape Cods are my favorite cocktails.

I've heard grapfruit and vodka as a greyhound, too.
Maybe some Rose's lime juice or triple sec? Tarts things up a bit. Myself, I put triple sec, a dash of peach schnapps, vodka, and OJ in a martini shaker and serve it strained so it's cold, but no ice to spit out. It's basically a fuzzy navel except for the ratios of the ingredients.
In HS the standard drink was cheap vodka with lemonaide. Really not a bad drink, either.

Or forget the vodka entirely and mix fresh orange juice with champagne: mimosa.
Wonderful for a really blow-out, decadent breakfast or brunch. Or just for the hell of it.

Leave out the orange juice mix the voddka with milk of magnesia and you have a Phillips screwdriver.

Add sloe gin and Southern Comfort and you've got....
A Slow Comfortable Screw
I don't know who's worse, rick or lurkmeister. Groan..... (LOL!) :D
Anyway I think the cranberry juice addition is kind of what I was looking for. "Cape Cod" eh? thanks Cervaise.
Sure are a lot of drinkers around here! :)

It gets worse, Jake-- I think Lurkmeister's drink is a commonly recognized one, and I think if you add Galliano you get a Slow Comfortable Screw against a Wall [from Harvey Wallbanger]?
A couple of years ago I thought of one [really just the pretense for a half-formed joke] that I called the Brentwood-- OJ [The Juice], vodka [this makes a screwdriver. . .] tomato juice [ fused with a Bloody Mary]; garnish with a Barbie head.
HA! :D :D
Well, there's this guy at my pub that calls "Budwieser" "Butwiper"
but that's another story. ;)

So where should one keep their Vodka?

Why would you keep it anywhere? Vodka is for drinking, silly goose! ;)

When its not being drunk, the freezer. No, seriously. Vodka doesn't freeze, and well, keeping it in the freezer gives it that authentic Russian/Polish (depending on where the vodka's from) chill :)

Yup! Well it is over here in the UK. Og only knows what those Americans call things ;-)
I definitely keep my jug in the fridge.
BTW, Who the Hell can afford champagne?
Hain't got to the store yet for cranberry juice yet. Don't plan to tonight.
Huh? OK, just ONE more. :D
Please? (Cat's giving me a strange look)

Vodka in the freezer!
To recap, because it got a little confusing (to me, at least) in the thread:
vodka + grapefruit = Greyhound
vodka + grapefruit + glass with salted rim = Salty Dog
vodka + OJ = Screwdriver
vodka + OJ + cranberry = Madras
vodka + cranberrry = Cape Codder
(although these days, one seems to find this last drink called a "Cape Cod" more often than not)
Jesus TD Christ, I just priced cranberry juice this morning at the grocery store: $3.99 for a medium sized bottle! Bought a can of grapefruit juice for a buck and a half instead. Not bad. ;)

What?! I didn't realise cranberry juice was that expensive in the States. I normally pay about £1.50 max for mine. I thought you guys over the pond had so many cranberries you didn't know what to do with them all!

I get frozen cranberry cocktail (52% juice, I think) for about $1.75 a can, to make 48 oz. Pure cranberry juice, besides being pretty undrinkable, is quite expensive.

Cranberry juice? Get WHITE Cranberry & Peach juice, instead. Makes THE BEST mixer in the universe.
Or you could take the orange juice and vodka and add freshly brewed Columbian coffee for a:

I used to drink something called a Slow Comfortable Screw on the Beach (when I got tired of one against the wall) but I can't think what made it on the beach rather than against the wall. Pineapple juice seems likely, except I hate pineapple anything--although, I may have had to be drunk already to order this, so maybe I just didn't notice the pineapple.
I keep my vodka in the freezer, and I used to keep my vermouth in the fridge--then I didn't need any ice to make (and therefore water down) my martinis.

Vodka + pineapple + orange = Bay Breeze (tasty!)
vodka + grapefruit + orange = Sea Breeze
Cape Cods traditionally require a lime; a "vodka with cranberry" is usually called just that. (Hey, I had an anal bar manager.)
If you don't mind expending a lil' cash on an alcoholic mixer, a chilled vodka + Kahlua is a very tasty beverage...known to its fans as a Black Russian. (Add cream and it's a White Russian. Add Coke to that and it's a Colorado Bulldog. All are very tasty....Bulldogs taste, to me, like melted ice cream floats. Only more fun. Mmmmmm....)
Jake, for the record champagne is no more expensive than wine. The house brands are about $3.99 a bottle. (I like Marwood....with a little peach schnapps. Mmmmm.)
And vodka + orange + peach schnapps = a Hairy Navel, vs. its softer cousin the Fuzzy Navel. I never really understood the point of Fuzzy Navels, though....kind of like amaretto sours. There's NO REAL ALCOHOL in 'em, dammit. If I want to drink a non-alcoholic beverage, I'll buy a Coke and save myself the three/four bucks difference. ;)
