I felt like putting a topic up here that could have a lot of different opinions, so this one came to my mind. Personally, I have these:
Korn-Freak on a Leash: One of the best videos I've ever seen, with the bullet effects and the lighting job, integrating animation.
Prodigy-Breathe: This video almost scared me. However, I thought it was great in the way that it basically went along with the mood of the song.

About the Freak on a Leash vid: I don't know if this was on purpose, but they have a chain link fence with a sign on it in the animated section. It looks oddly like one near the beginning of Citizen Kane...

REM's Losing My Religion was good-- it was like multiple stills or tableau vivant of old master paintings.
When I was in 6th grade or so I saw the very old video to Bowie's Ashes to Ashes and I thought that was the strangest thing I had ever seen.
I'm not a Madonna fan but I study renaissance art so i'm into odd liturgical issues and creepy religious stuff so Like A Prayer was neat.
Has anyone seen the Psychic TV videos floating around? Very very strange.

I agree that most of the older videos are better than some of the new stuff. I mean, acts like the Backstreet Boys..their entire videos are made up of just dancing. The further you go back in music video history, the more videos you see that actually relate to the song. I always appreciate that. I think that's what videos were made for.
I second the vote for "Sabotage."

Weird Al: Smells like Nirvana
Grover Monster: Wubba Wubba Wubba
Mr. Knowit all's fave "Big Log"...That song came out when I first moved to rural Nevada (Tonopah, to be exact...anybody been there?)
I heard it a lot when I was driving from Toledo, OH to Nevada and the video actually looks like rural Nevada..Desert Area, gas station out in the middle of nowhere..
One of my favorites is Madonna's "Material Girl"...I like how she sings about how she loves money and things and ends up with a cowboy with a bunch of daisies and a pickup truck.

Do the Evolution by Pearl Jam
It was done by MacFarlane Studios who did the Korn's Freak on a Leash video. Only a few have seen it and it rips the gills out of Freaka on a Leash.
THe song rocks and the video is perfect aas it flys through history showing Humanities "evolution" through its barbaricacy. Makes you pause and think about the meaning of both the song and video

More that come to my mind are the recent Foo Fighters videos. I enjoy the amusing storylines, and I think that Dave Grohl dressing up like a woman in each of them is strange...humorous, but strange nonetheless...Everlong is one of those videos that comes to my mind. Great song, good video.

I like "Don't Come Around Here No More" too, Inky, although probably not for all the same reasons... :)
I like the videos that tell a story that fits the song. "Cryin'" by Aerosmith is one like that...tho' I'm sure there are better examples.
I liked one that was not shown very often, called Dead Ringer For Love by Meatloaf.

Most every video always failed to impress me.
That said, "Thriller" was pretty much a MOVIE, and you gota give props to Wacko Jacko for being an innovator of this artform and employing some mighty talented people behind him for this and some of his other clips.
The Foo Fighters seem to always make good, funny videos.
I appreciated the artistry behind such '80s fare as The Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" and the silliness of Cyndee Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
"One," by Metallica, was scary and I enjoyed playing it for family members to see the reaction. Made me rent the movie that it lifted scened from.
Anything by Weird Al makes me laugh...

I loved many videos in the early days but am not much impressed with the dark, ugly, near-pornographic videos now. Gettin' old, I am, but the quick cut, cut, cut style is unimaginative and annoying (and dated; it was old by '84.)
For me the all-time best, purely for fitting the song so well, was Pretenders' "Back on the Chain Gang." Very simple, and dead-on perfect for the song.

I don't think music will ever be the same as it used to be, with Weird Al putting out parodies on the popular songs. He does a great job of that, and I'm in agreement with a lot of you. Everything he does makes me laugh.

My two favourites are Radiohead's "Street Spirit", which is just beautiful, and New Order's "True Faith". You just have to love a video where two guys keep slapping each other in sync with the music throughout the video. Not to mention the punching bag woman that does the lyrics in sign language.

My top 10 in no particular order:
1. Boys of summer Don Henley
2. Metro Berlin
3. State of the Nation Industry
4. New yeras Day U2
5. Phantom Menace Weird Al
6. If anyone Falls Stevie Nicks
7. Sonny Came Home Shawn Colvin
8. Pressure Billy Joel

10. If you had my Love Jennifer Lopez

Icerigger..*sighs* Jennifer Lopez.
I also enjoy the videos where it doesn't have any particular storyline involved. It's just the energy of the band. I just recently saw the new RATM video for "Guerilla Radio." That's a pretty good video. It does have storyline, but it shows a lot of emotion, too. I also recently saw the new KoRn video for "Falling Away From Me." The directing job on it was pretty good, the message sent was positive, and the energy was classic KoRn.

Because I don't get it. He's just in the back of a car driving through town, mix through to a couple on the beach. In B&W.

GUANOLAD--
As for boys of summer, I don't like it for Don Henley but for the impression the images gave me. I see the man at the desk with his papers and liquor cart as a man successful in business and wealthy, powerful but empty. I see the couple on the beach as him with his lost love, he is very unhappy with his life and would give it up
just to be on that beach with her again. I find the video as a very sad story about lost love.

Most of mine have been mentioned, so I'll skip the repetition. However, I do love "Push" by Matchbox 20. The colors, angles, props and facial expressions by everyone are wonderful, and go along with the song very well.

Anyone here ever see Let Forever Be by Chemical Brothers? It's the song on their new album with vocals by Noel Gallagher.
Anyway, I've only seen it played twice, both times late at night. One of the coolest videos I've ever seen. Very trippy. The new Gap commericial that has "Ice Ice Baby" playing and has people merging into one another is basically a ripoff of the C. Bros. video.

Stevie, yeah, I actually have seen that video. The reason that video hasn't been previously mentioned by me is that MTV hasn't played it in a while. I was awed by the effects used in that. I told my friends about that, and oddly enough, they haven't seen it. That particular video didn't get a lot of playing time..however, in my mind, anything by one of the Gallagher brothers has to be good :-)

For the most part, I agree with that statement. It was a long video. You have to remember, however, that the song itself was long and drawn out. I don't enjoy rock bands coming out with a power ballad to show off their "soft side" once in their careers (ex. Aerosmith). It's a bug that I don't like to bite, and it has bitten some of the best. Even with this, though, "November Rain" was a decent ballad song. I just hope that "ballad bug" doesn't really bite any other noteworthy bands soon...

Has anybody seen the new KoRn video "Falling Away From Me?" Fred Durst did a pretty good job of directing that one. He seems to be a director who really doesn't go for the drawn out ones, or the ones with loads of special effects. Fred just gets the job done, and I think it's evident in this video. Well done, Fred.

Where (when) do you all see these videos? Whenever I turn on MTV or VH1, they're showing gameshows, or rockumentories or movies or pretty much everything but music videos.
I thought they started VH1 because MTV was so full of other crap they didn't have time to play actual music videos anymore. Well now VH1 is full of not-music-videos also. I guess they'll be rolling out VH2 any day now.

SunsetLightning I love that Foo Fighters video for Learn to Fly. Is there more than one that they dress up like women in?
Satan - is the Metallica video you're talking about the one that's taken from Johnny Get Your Gun... or something like that? That's so close, but not quite it. Weird book, weird movie, weird Metallica video.
Stevie Rave On, you named my all time favorite, Chemical Brothers' Let Forever Be. I've seen it only three times but WOW what a video. MTV's website had part of it available for viewing... let's see if it's still there... Here it is: Let Forever Be (http://www.mtv.com/sendme.tin?page=/mtv/bands_az/c/chemical_brothers/index.html)
My faves:
Blink 182's All the Small Things - It's priceless, the way they make fun of other videos... especially at the end when the lead singer winks at the camera, it pulls back and he's on the toilet!
LEN's Steal My Sunshine - When I first saw it, I thought that the guy and girl were a couple - they just hug each other and joke around... thought they were cute. A few days later, I found out a few days later that they're brother and sister. Even cooler. Made me miss my brother.
Bif Naked's Moment of Weakness - What a cool way to let a guy know what a jerk he is... Show up at his office and sing him a thrashin' song. She's my hero.
ZenBeam, I watch videos first thing in the morning while doing crunches.

I was thinking of this videa last week. I believe the name of the song is "cruisin" and the role of Sunset Sam was played by Hulk Hogan.

Well, most of my faves have already been mentioned, but here they are off the top of my head...
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Tom Petty. (Actually just about anything Petty does is good, but that one was especially good.)
Losing my Religion - REM
Mr. Krinkle - Primus
Sober - Tool
Happiness in Slavery - Nine Inch Nails (didn't play on MTV, but an excellent video)
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (like Petty, all of his videos are good)
Freak on a Leash - Korn
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
Sabotage - The Beastie Boys
Smells Like Nirvana - Weird Al
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
Walk This Way - Run DMC and Aerosmith
Fields of Gold - Sting
Sugarwater - Cibo Matto

I like everything by Weird Al.
I like everything by Cheap Trick.
"All the Small Things" by Blink 182 cracks me up.
U2 videos, especially the early ones are great, such energy.
Foo Fighters "Everlong". That song is amazing anyway and then to have a cool video to go with it, I love it.
Anything with Sting in it. :D
I'm sure there's a lot more I'm not thinking of.

By far, the best video ever made is called Scrape. I've only seen it once, and can't remember the music. But the video is just three minutes of people falling off of their skateboards!

I liked Weird Al Yankovic's song "Headline News". That's a classic parody Music Video, right there.

Wow, I'm really going to love this one. Let me just start making a list here:
1. All of the Tool videos- the claymation was very excellent work and definitely adds a creepiness factor.
2. Last Dance with Mary Jane- Tom Petty
3. High Hopes- Pink Floyd- I only saw just a little bit of this video once but from what I saw, it looked really cool and the song is pretty good.
4. Heart's Filthy Lesson- David Bowie
5. I'm Afraid of Americans- David Bowie & Trent Reznor
6. All of the Nine Inch Nails videos- I have this thing for Trent, sorry!
7. Can't Speak- Danzig
8. almost all of the Marilyn Manson videos- it might sound strange but they're all pretty good. A little weird maybe, but good.

Duran Duran - Girls on Film, but only the full length version.
(heh heh heh - just kidding - just trying to be risque - it's not quite working)
My actual favorites (I'm pretty much stuck in the 80s):
Duran Duran - Union of the Snake or New Moon on Monday
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Arcadia - Election Day
Police - Wrapped Around Your Finger
Aha - Take on Me

I only saw it once and I don't remember the title or even how the song went, but it was by the Replacements. It's a shot of an upstairs window, someone puts a speaker on the ledge, and the song starts and that's the whole video: the shot of this speaker in the window.
That was "Bastards Of Young". Great video. It's actually shot indoors, slowly panning back from a speaker in a livingroom. Pretty famous for being the "Anti-video".
The Replacements were pretty hip like that. Even if they did start making mainstream videos themselves...
Pesonal favs: NIN - Head Like A hole, All the Tool stuff, Tom Petty's You Got Lucky (I'll admit it, I emulated the look of that video when I was in High School- trench coats, boots, bandanas- it WAS the 80's)
And I have to give credit to Joan Jett's I love Rock n' Roll for kickstarting me into puberty. I distinctly remember seeing that video for the first time and thinking: WOW. Girls are reaaallly neat...
More recently, I dig the Foo Fighters stuff as well. Anything that breaks the choreographed dancers/ beach party/ pseudo concert cliches is nice.
Speaking of cliche horrible things has anyone seen Creed's Take Me Higher video?
Jeezus. Could they possibly make a more pretenious/ gimmicky video? Fits the pretenious/ gimmicky nature of the band though I suppose

Wow. A lot of TOOL fans. I'd put them down except that I haven't seen any videos...except part of one. I'm missing a lot, aren't I?
Mine faves:
Daydream Believer- Monkees
Ashes to Ashes- David Bowie
Rooster- Alice in Chains
Whiskey in the Jar- Metallica
Three Libras- a Perfect Circle
All i can think of for now. I love reviving old threads. :)

Micheal Jackson-Black or White the long version. Lovely filmmaking, beautiful CGI morphing between 'races', great dancing, extended anti-bigotry message at the end. I even forgive the appearance of a still-youthful McCauley Caulkin.
I don't care what people think about his appearance or lifestyle that f**cker has got some great tunes.

I believe that would be "Do You Remember the First Time?" by Pulp. And whc03grady, I believe your video would be "Alex Chilton".
My favorite music videos are...
"American Music" by the Violent Femmes. My all-time favorite.
Anything directed by Spike Jonze. I love his sense of humor and ability to match action with music.
"Late in the Day" by Supergrass
"Southern California", which I believe was performed by Supergrass and directed by Spike Jonze
"The Distance" by Cake
"Lorraine's Car" by Cake Like
"Lay all your love on me" by Erasure
"Seems" by Queen Sarah Saturday
"Big Blue Sea" by Lazybone*
Anything by Lee Jung Hyun (Korean artist, warped sense of visuals)*
"Punk Rock Girl" by The Dead Milkmen
"Say You Will" by Gogh Van Go
I'm sure there are plenty I'm forgetting. I just love music videos! My favorites tend to be simple videos, not huge production numbers, that are visually interesting. I also like videos with strong elements of absurdity and humor.
*These are avaliable on the net, but might be hard to find if you can't read Korean...

Funny this thread should resurface after so long; the video I listed, Smack My Bitch Up, was recently cited by MTV on a special listing the "20 Most Outrageous MTV Moments" (http://www.mtv.com/sendme.tin?page=/mtv/tubescan/20anniversary/20outrageous/index.jhtml). Apparently, they showed the video only late at night, and only for one week.

"UHF" by Weird Al. What is it about him that lets him be such a chameleon?
"You Might Think" by the Cars.
"She-Bop" by Cyndi Lauper
"Oh Sherry" by whoever the hell it was, because of its embedded satire of over-blown videos
