well, uhm 6 without trying.
and i did pitch up at work with black fingernails once (almost got me fired)
and, ah, some people at work are scared of me, they say i look like a goth even though they have only seen me in work uniform(and a damn shitty uniform at that)
so, does that make me a 9?

Maybe a 1. Probably closer to .75, depending on what you mean by "go out at nighttime." I mean, I saw Corky Siegel and Kurt Elling a week ago, but I don't think that does too much for my goth bona fides!
And I'm assuming the Sisters of Mercy aren't the nuns at the catholic school down the block...

Natch I've heard of Sisters of Mercy -- who doesn't love Leonard Cohen?
I'm about a 5, but if you'd caught me in high school, I'd've been a 7.

lol....8.5. Our once a month club ran this Saturday just gone...yay! hell I have been goth since the 80's and too old to change now :)

Same excuse for me, UnwrittenNocturne. I've tried other looks, but it suits me and my personality the best, and I just don't feel comfortable looking "normal".
I'm about a 7, BTW.

According to my friends, I'm a 9.
They've said I would still be goth driving my 2.5 kids in a minivan from soccer practice on the way to Home Depot to buy yellow paint for my breakfast nook, or words to that effect.
Last week, a temp came into my (bright, colorful) office, spoke with me about Excel for a few moments, and then asked if I was goth.
I must give off goth pheromones.
0, however I do go to movies at night sometimes so maybe 0.5. If you count blue as a dark colour then I may even be a 1.

1. If I want people to notice I'm different, I'll save money on face paint and just act crazy instead of look it. In fact, I frequently do that.

7, but I'm a teenager trying to annoy my parents.

0. Well, my socks are black today...
Out of curiousity, are there black goths-- that is, Af.-Am.?

Lol. I do not know any goths who use face paint...except for Halloween. Lots of todays 'spooky kids' (read Marilyn Manson fans) do though. they are not really goth though. I settle for a little eyeliner, black clothes for everyday use (it does go with everything, especially with black). the only time I erally get 'dressed up' is for clubbing.
Maybe I am just making a kind of plea not to confuse goth with spooky. Ah well....need a little gothic smilie now ;)

Probably a 3 or 4. There were times in my life when I was "goth-ier" than that. My kids can't believe I'm old enough to have seen Ozzie singing live with Black Sabbath (in Memphis no less !! :D)

I'd have to say 3, but only because I've always felt that black is a slimming color. Wardrobe color aside, however, I'm probably the least Goth person on the planet (next to my fiancee, that is).

Maybe a 6 or so.
Pale skin, red lips, red hair, black clothes...however, I don't think I look terribly gothic. I like punk a lot better.
Check out the site in my sig for pics of our group.

Now that I'm all suburban mommy I barely rate a 5.

I can't really rate myself on this. I kind of swing back and forth between the extremes. I own a buttload of black clothes, and at the moment my hair is dyed black, I'm really pale and I love the nighttime.
But.. my hair is black mainly because I dyed it like 7 different colors over a period of 3 or 4 months - I went from red to bleached orangey, then put pink streaks in that, re-did the pink streaks when they faded after about a week, put in fuschia tips, then dyed the whole thing light brown, about two weeks later dyed it all dark blue, then went home for Christmas break and attempted to dye over the blue with dark brown and it came out this weird greenish-black color with brown roots. So I dyed it black because it looked awful and now I'm letting it grow out. I wear a lot of black, but I also love wearing bright orange and hot pink, and anything that is sparkly and/or fuzzy. I wear black eyeliner most of the time, but pink lipstick. So.. hm.
I guess I kinda swing back and forth between a .5 and a 6.5, depending on my mood and the occasion. I'm useless, I know. :)

About 5. Used to be 6 or so. Not goth enough for the gothier than thou crowd, as not looking goth 100% of the time, but goth enough to never miss Goth Night at a certain small Cambridge nightclub. I suppose I was the College Goth for our college for a year or so, in the absence of gothier opposition.
Every Oxford or Cambridge college has a College Goth or two, just like every small town or village has a Village Goth.
What this country needs is more beered-up 30 year old goths in tight trousers. None of these young children in their minging Slipknot T shirts calling themselves goths. Not fit to dust excess flour off Carl McCoy's hat. Feh.

5 for sure.
6 has been done.
thats about it
oh and
9 has been brought to my attention by my friends sometimes.

Amen to that. And no, I do not feel old and out of place...I was a real goth before these kids were born. Of course, like Mr Eldritch I may deny all knowledge.....

Well...most of my clothes are black (though not all, regardless of what my friends tell me). I've heard of Sister's of Mercy but I prefer Bauhaus. I've never played in a Goth band but I conned the DJ into planing Skinny Puppy at my prom, and I've had sex with guys wearing more eyeliner than I was (come to think of it, wearing more fishnet than I was).
So I would say 9 except...I am not a Goth.
I am a Bohemian  .

I just call it "The New Style".
It's only when that punk, Giorgio Vasari came along, that I got labeled "Goth". After all, who is he to question a truly grand style such as mine.
"Ha, renaissance!"

Hrrmmm, I have some problems with the OP, but I know that it is mostly in jest.
For example, I don't see how being in a band makes you "more Goth".
Perhaps I fall under 9....however, like betenoir, I am not Goth.
I always wear black (either pants or shirt), but not necessarily "gothic" clothing...not anymore.
I prefer the darker aesthetics. Gothic literature, poetry, and classically dark music.
I find beauty in all things grotesque.
I could write a book about vampire history, vampire literature, or vampiric theories.
Do these things classify me as "Goth"? To some maybe.
I prefer not to be labelled (don't we all?). I just like the darker side of things, especially when contrasted against the lighter side.

With the way I'd like to dress and the kind of clothing I've been buying most recently, I'd say I probably am close to the 5-6 range... but well, finances and conformity to other people's clothing standards in the past have seriously messed up my wardrobe. Essentially, I'm a bit of a clothing chameleon, but I prefer dark colours and hints of past eras, like Victorian or Renaissance. I don't really think my style can go into a category at the moment, except maybe some weird preppy-goth-punk variation. Depending on what I'm wearing, one of them is prevalent over hints of the other two.
And I've also noticed a lot of my dressy clothes have a hint of Audrey Hepburn appeal in the lines. Weird.

I'm about a 5.5.
Been to goth clubs, have goth friends, like much music played at the club. Do I dress goth all the time? Nah. Sometimes, yeah. And whether I look good n black depends on whom you ask; my mother says it makes me look washed out, if that helps. ;)

6.5. Skipping the "Sisters of Mercy," as I'm not so much into the music. It's a .5 because I've only done the "Goth at Work" thing a couple of times, and that was at the sucky telemarketing job. My mood makes it vary, as does the season (Goth clothes aren't exactly the warmest things on the face of the earth, and I'm allergic to the cold).

Hmmm....OK....I am NOT a goth...but I wear mostly black punk rock related T shirts. I own every Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and Samhain albums on vinyl, Most Christian Death and Bauhaus albums on vinyl and the ones I don't have, I have as MP3s, and I even dig Nick Cave. I think however, that that's due more to having grown up in the 70s and discovering punk rock with stuff like early Devo and Pere Ubu along with the Sex Pistols when I was 12 or so. I dyed my hair black before, but I had a way NON-Goth mowhawk. I guess I would be a 4 on your list, but really I'm more of a NEGATIVE 4 on the goth scale. Goths are pretty silly, what with their Wicca and paganism and black fingernail polish and all.

9 verging on 10.
I mean goth in the mood way and not in the context of trying to live a life where one affects so bloody much.

5 with the intention to raise that number once I'm rich and famous.
Do you knowThe Slaghuis? (http://www.slaghuis.net/) He does a Net radio show (Radio Free Abattoir) regularly, with old shows archived. Good site and great music.
Happy L my friend/kickbox instructor is a Jamaican born New York expat here in Prague. We try and go to shows when we have time, but family duties get in the way. We went to the Sister's of Mercy last year? 2 years ago? When younger he sported anywhere from a blue mohawk to shaved head and lots of black. Plus back in the day there used to be a HUGE MEAN black guy who ran around the Denver punk scene. He even hung out with skinheads, which was very very weird. So they do exist.

I've heard of Sisters of Mercy. So, 2. I guess. I wear browns and greens, and listen to Radio 3. I've got good night vision and the complete works of H.P. Lovecraft, though.

I'd confess to being a 9 but of course every Goth knows that a *real* Goth never says yes to that question....

Hmm. I'd say 3-ish, maybe. I've heard live Goth music, but only because I was at DragonCon. (I rank real high on the geek scale, okay? :)) I look good in black, but I only wear it for work.
I've always thought that Goth-ness was something most folks grew out of. A fifteen-year-old Goth? Perfectly normal. Of course, you think life sucks when you're fifteen. A thirty-five-year-old Goth? I dunno. But if it makes you happy, more power to you.

I'm not a goth at ALL, I'm pretty much your basic anti-goth. But I do own black articles of clothing and, being a college girl, I do go out at night, so I guess 1. I like the way I look in black, but I hesitate to call myself a 3.

Even if I dressed in black from head to toe every day, wore razor blade jewelry actually protruding from my wrists, had been at Bauhaus's first ever jam session and hadn't seen the Big Yellow Lamp in the Big Blue Room* since 1986, I wouldn't want to be labeled a Goth. It's been at least 14 years since I felt compelled to perpetuate silly labels like this.
Seen me? Labeled me? You're already wrong. <<shrug>>

6, maybe? Going through my wardrobe is fun- black, black, black, purple, red, black, black...
I've heard of Sisters of Mercy, dress goth-ish, have attended goth concerts (okay, one concert, but it's the only concert I've ever been to, okay? Yay VNV!) and only ever go to goth clubs, because I like them better. Actually, I was at one on Saturday.
Wait, I do dress kind of goth at work- maybe I'm a 7. I don't know. I don't do the makeup thing. I'm incompetent with makeup.

I'm about a 3.5 now, not only do I look good in black, 75% of my clothes are black.
At one time I was a 9. Unfortunately, that was before anyone had heard of Goth. I was just very pale, with very dark hair, and my attempts at wearing makeup were often scary.
