View Full Version : What's Your Fantasy Kitchen Appliance?

Green Bean

Here's the scenario:

You're having a new kitchen put in to your great big house. You can have pretty much any appliances you want put in. Cost is no object. What appliance would you be most excited to have?

My fantasy appliance would be a restaurant-quality ice maker. I like my drinks very cold, and most regular refrigerator ice makers make that cloudy ice. I'd love an ice maker to make me loads and loads of clear beautiful ice!

I want that Sears refrigerator that is an Etagere-style -- the doors open on top (with no divider between the sides) and the bottom is a big, deep drawer. The best fridge ever!

A microwave oven packed full of hundred dollar bills.

Failing that, a keggerator.

Two nice big ovens. A double sink. A dishwasher.

Can you tell I live in NYC and have a kitchen that was made from WWII surplus submarine kitchen componets?

That etagere-style fridge at Sears looks nice, but that bottom drawer seems rather shaky. The door latching's also kinda iffy. (I had my hands on one at Sears this past Saturday, and the left door popped open when the right door was closed.) Besides, this is about dreaming and fantasizing.

Go for broke and get a Sub-Zero installation with the modular drawer units that go under the counter. You can have one unit devoted to ice, a fridgelet conveniently located so the kids and guests can get drinks withut tracking through the kitchen and getting in your way. Add a wine cooler module wherever it fits and ..oh what the heck... it's a fantasy... two wine coolers!

I'll leave it to your designer whether the fridge and cooler doors/drawers should be stainless steel, or framed in the same wood as your cabinets. I'm leaning to wood - the steel fronts show every little smudge and fingerprint!

Rosie from the Jetsons.:)

Well, If she doesn't count as an appliance, I guess I'd like a side-by-side oven (or 2 ovens). It's very frustrating to come up with the perfect menu and then discover that two of the dishes need to cook at totally different temperatures.

I want a Smeg oven, not only is the name 'to die for' but they are extremely good quality as well. Oh and one of those magnetic induction hobs.

LilyoftheValley I find a combined Microwave / Oven the perfect sollution to thos two temperature problems, it takes no more space than a simple Microwave would. Next time you need a new microwave look into the idea.

Cheers, Bippy

P.S. sorry if this is a double post.

First of all, I want a kitchen that's the size of my current apartment.

Now, for appliances. I want a freezer-on-the-bottom refrigerator with pull-out freezer, or, even better, separate freezer and refridge units, each at convenient height.

The only other thing I really want is a Magic Mill (http://www.magicmillusa.com/), and maybe the new Cuisinart coffee-maker-with-grinder-attached.

I'd like an electric burr coffee grinder. But more than that, I'd like an olive pitter: as automatic, electric and damn bloody magical as possible. It's not even as if I eat olives that often, yet the pitting of olives is still the most annoying kitchen chore that I can think of.

I just got new kitchen appliances about a month ago. We bought all stainless steel stuff and it looks so great.

So instead of a new "appliance" I want all my counter tops to be stainless steel. Also, all stainless steel cabinets and drawers!!!

I LOVE IT! haha

Why stop at the floor? I'm picturing a kitchen that can seal off, all dishes inside, that will clean itself entirely...kinda like those public toilets in Europe, but less gross. And doesn't cost 1 euro.

Lola I got a very groovy apple peeler/slicer/corer from Pampered Chef. It will do potatoes too.

My dream appliance is a flash-freezer. That way I can put up all those yummy vegetables from the garden in a shorter time.

a separate freeze so i can buy meat and some other frozen foods in bulk when they're on sale, or when a friend has extra venison

a home carbonation set up, My friend's parents have one made from an old soda fcountain, which is very convenient, but a "batch mode" one is really not hard to do from scratch. I may well do this someday.

What I thought when I read the title was: A dish washer that also puts the dishes away. I wouldn't even mind hand washing them all if I had a putter away-er.

I too have visited that armoire style fridge at Sears and been underwhelmed. The thing I noticed was that that big drawer would be kind of a hassle because I"m sure whatever I wanted to get out would surely always be at the bottom.

Of actually available appliances I would say an indoor grill with a working exhaust system.

My true kitchen fantasy is to have a second outdoor kitchen with a huge grill, sink, big counter, etc. It doesn't make sense where I live now but if I plan my retirement correctly. . .

A 48" wide, Viking Professional Series, self-cleaning, gas range with dual ovens, a four burner cook top with the griddle/simmerplate and grill. It is my fondest appliance desire but even if I hocked my kidney on ebay, it will never be mine *sniff*

I will always lust after a red AGA cooker....ahhhh. A Viking or Wolf brand stove wouldn't hurt my feelings either. I have also wanted one of those Sub Zero professional refrigerators as well - they are great for making fried ice cream!

I want a well-designed kitchen that's big enough for two people to work in, with a built-in bread rising area over the stove, where it'll be nice and warm. Maybe with a heating element built in.

I also want a big, flat topped stove, double sinks, a KitchenAid self-cleaning mixer, and a sink garbage disposal thing. Lots of counter space, too.

Oh, you said what one thing- okay, probably a walk-in freezer with built-in ice cream maker. I'd love to be able to make pies and things in bulk and freeze them. I'm not paying for electricity, right?

OxyMoron - I've lusted after a Magic Mill for years!

Funny thing is, I love kitchen stuff. Good knives, good pans, good mixers, but I hardly ever cook. It must be genetic. 4 of my mother's brothers trained as chefs, and all of her sisters are great cooks as well.

Believe it or not, I would want a Cat Repellent Device of some kind. Like a force field or something. Because every time I go into the kitchen, no matter what for, I end up with three walking "starving" hairballs begging me with those sad little eyes to please feed them.

I also want the heavy duty espresso maker. Someday I'll plunk down the cash for the Francis Francis! E.maker (in orange).

Other things I'd like:

Gas range
Wusthoff knives
A big, antique butcher-block island
A refrigerator with big, see-through produce drawers, and a tap for a pony keg
A big, deep enameled sink with the center garbage disposal, and the tap that doubles as a spray attatchment

As a technical editor for a cabinet manufacturer and former kitchen designer, I see kitchens on a daily basis that make me think" You bastards!" I'm talking 6-700 square feet, not one but TWO 48" Subzero's, or three or four SZ 700 series ( the built in ones that go far ~2-5K apiece), or three $1500 dishwashers, or 15K in crown moulding I kd you not FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS worth of crown mouldings that are ten bloody feet in the air.

Lets not even start on the 7K island countertops, the $1000 dollar sinks, the $750 faucets, the tile that retails at $25/sq. ft.

I recently edited a job (all this is in a single family residence mind you) that consisted of $370,000 worth of cabinetry and did NOT include the kitchen! It didn't even include the custom casework, just the run of the mill "custom" cabinetry for the 8 baths, three powder rooms, four walk in closets, two butlers pantries...feh, I'm tired of trying to remember all the rest...suffice it to say I hate these people:)

MikeG, my dad does those kinds of remodelling jobs, the $250,000 master bedroom suite?

My kitchen, in addition to the dream appliance(s), should be big enough to accomadate, a comfy loveseat near the fireplace. The kitchen should open into the den.
I want a six eye industrial grade range/oven and a second oven in the work island in the middle of the kitchen, the island should have room for at least four stools. I want two dishwashers, one of them a small one that slide out like a drawer. A Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer, a double sink under a large window and a smaller sink in the work island.
I want a pantry for staples and open cabinets for dishes and food stuffs. I want a hanging pot rack.
The kitchen should also have french doors opening onto the patio/porch where a small green house shelters fresh herbs and tomatoes year round.
I want a kitchen to entertain in. Everytime we go to friends we wind up in the kitchen. By the way, I don't really cook, Hubby does, I'm the prep cook and assistant.

I would like a Fisher-Paykel dishwasher or a trimline Miele. I have a galley kitchen that is very cramped.

Now my microwave is dead, and I just dont' care! So I take meat out of the freeze two days ahead of time and popcorn is popped on the stove (way delicioso). Though I miss the overhead light that it provided over the stove. But microwaves are considered indispensible, like phones and TV's, every household must have one! So the next one i get should be high wattage with a carousel.

You know, not to point out the obvious, but if it bothers you this much, can't you just buy the kind of olives with the pits already removed - sometimes with a decorous piece of pimento?

I want a waste disposal unit. Where I live at the moment has a septic tank rather than mains drainage :( so I can't have one.

Belrix - because they ming. I like big juicy black Greek olives, and I can't find those without pits. The pre-pitted black olives readily available around here taste like tire rubber. When I'm eating olives as olives, I'm happy to spit the pits out, but that kind of doesn't work when I'm making tapenade.

I've always wanted a Sears Wet-Dry Shop Vac mounted on some sort of overhead track over my cooking surfaces, or on some sort of apparatus like the dentist's light so you could push it out of the way when you didn't need it. After kneading out the pizza crust, you just pull it over to suck up the excess flour. Scraps on the cutting board? No problem.

We were at Sears to buy a larger shop vac (damn water in our basement) and they had the little hand held ones on sale for half price ($20). I have to go back and get one. I just think that a true Guy Kitchen can't be complete without a Sears Wet-Dry Shop Vac.

I actually have my dream kitchen. We moved into this house in 1991 and the first year we were here we redesigned the kitchen. I chose:
2 Dacor convection ovens
Dacor pinnacle hood so my cooktop can be in the middle of the kitchen without a huge hood hanging there
gagganau cooktop with 6000, 9000 and 16000 btu burners
all the lower cabinets have built in drawers that are adjustable, I have a lazy susan corner cabinet and a half lazy susan corner cabinet so every bit of space is accessible and usable
upper cabinets all have adjustable shelves
Asko Asea dishwasher--quietest thing imaginable and cleans things that have been sitting in there unrinsed for a week
trash compactor--first one we've had, I'll always have one
hot water dispenser (absolute must have--I've had one of these in every kitchen since 1976 )
my favorite refrigerator was the Kenmore that just died on us

One of the things that really stunned me when we went looking for a refrigerator was that the one I had was better than anything new. But because the problem was seals leaking we decided not to repair it. We went with a Kenmore elite which we liked better than anything else, but the whole family complains about the lack of storage of this one compared to our other one. It is only about .5 cubic feet smaller, but the design is much less efficient.

We also saw a really neat GE refrigerator freezer that was actually one whole refrigerator opens to the right, and a separate freezer the same size opens to the left. I would have loved to have had that kind of space, but my kitchen wouldn't allow it.
