View Full Version : Phoenix Dopefest

It's been a while since the last one, so before it hits 110 degrees in the shade, it's time for another!

Here's one idea for times, looking at things from the last few threads: Saturday, around 2 or 3 pm, perhaps April 26 or May 3?

As for activities, the idea of a picnic/outdoor event was appealing, but is it going to be too hot for that in late April/early May? Any other ideas?

OK, this one stays, as it actually has text in it. :)

But the other one has style!

lel!!! I'm flying out Sunday with my wife! We'll be there for three weeks.

Whats the name of that Mexican place on Central, right at the base of South Mountain? Los Dos Mellino's (sp?) They have Margarita's by the pitcher :) And really good Mexican... Whadaya think ?

You all just tell me the day/time/place (and make it after 1.30pm on a Saturday) and I'll be there! Both those Saturdays work for me!

lel
04-08-2003, 11:14 AM
Coldy, thanks. If you can make it out to this dopefest, I owe you one!

Phlosphr, that's great! How long are you going to be here? That restaurant sounds like a good idea, what kind of price range is it there? (Don't tell me about the margaritas, however. It is not good to mix lel and margaritas.)

Mauvaise, sounds great! However, I remembered approximately 15 seconds after hitting "submit post" that I will be out of town on April 26. I'm available other Saturdays, and if April 26 is good, I'll think of you all from where I am! :)

04-08-2003, 11:19 AM
No way, chica, this is your dopefest - you *have* to be there! Why don't we just make the 'fest for May 3rd? :)

lel
04-08-2003, 11:39 AM
Oh, it can be your dopefest, Mauvaise. :) May 3 is good for me -- are you still going to be in town then, Phlosphr?

Phlosphr
04-08-2003, 12:37 PM
lel - Yep I'll be there. The price range of the place is medium. highest price there is like 13 a plate. It's just good Picante Mexican food. No margarita's for lel huh ... too bad!! But when I have margarita's I get funny, things tend to take on kind of a golden sheen, and I start telling stories about anything and everything and my wife usually ends up driving home. But I have never been to a phoenix fest, so if booze is a no no then that's cool too :)

lel
04-08-2003, 01:34 PM
Oh, I didn't mean to say that there was no booze at a Phoenix dopefest. (IMO Phoenix dopefests appear to be a bit more low-key than dopefests in other places, but they aren't booze-free by any means. On the other hand, not everybody drinks either.) I most assuredly want to hear your stories! I just meant that I shouldn't be there drinking too much because I tend not to stop at one. Of course, if they're wonderful margaritas... :D

Los Dos Molinos is about three miles from my house. The food is fairly cheap. However, it is important to note that they do not make MILD Mexican! Everything is VERY hot. Which means that I need to keep the beer flowing... ;)

As of right now, I can make all Saturdays after 4/26.

Mauvaise
04-08-2003, 03:16 PM
Then it looks like 5/3 (May 3rd) it is!

Winnowill - are the rice and beans VERY hot too??! :o

DaToad
04-08-2003, 05:20 PM
As of today, I can make it.

The last time I was at Los Dos, there was at least one item on the menue that wasn't blistering hot, but I can't remember what it is.

Mauvaise, the rice and beans are not hot, spicey wise.

We'll be there. Good thing as we'll be out of town the weekend before.

lel
04-10-2003, 09:07 PM
I just called Los Dos Molinos -- they reassured me that they do have stuff for people who can't handle spicy things, like tacos and tostadas. They also said that they aren't usually busy on Saturday afternoons, so it shouldn't be a problem.

How's Los Dos Molinos (map (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?zoom=6&mapdata=jZ2g%2b%2fXW8V9PJiSgUgme1X5SkSZd6l4GDlS0EC%2fQ8DnaMZKlTntB3ylH3T7ObfjTvZHUrty1fylA6k%2fdMCv7 6VWi76IKcyh6CIzgIx%2fWYPHZ9UuGIk380tRiIAel1QQrCWG1mPmxZZQiyCWmghR8GUIY9%2bwc4M7416JrVgpKVwDYSdPAhJze MdDwyNCMQnmD3n%2bUwI4lclDUvq1bSlXp9IloUcSFIA2eUN4gm3v6UIJlXfeTkIq9RUW1LEnMOgiXxcVnibnn2tlMlKeI7ruKob 23u2i9qB81TABYsVpWIAb4AsmJVo8Anwx2JJBh9BjYurnPQ5H%2frj1%2fA0vRlHcw2lOufsfJfsT2Q%2faMad%2bsa%2bSIK7g4 NtwTDw%3d%3d)) at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3?

Pardon my interuption, but, but, but, that map is for a place in Kansas.

Did they move Phoenix?

Ah, it's MapQuest.

Nevermind.

lel
04-10-2003, 11:29 PM
So it is in Kansas -- curse those MapQuest people for moving Phoenix on me! How's this (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&ed=XEOA1ep_0TrHzKU.6Mn83UIAJ.fxbTWG8habVn_nEdMV9dsy_t1_Toe5Mj9Ssjmunu6DByp6g8AKzFIamTbV96ARkw--&csz=Phoenix,+AZ+85042-7605&country=us&cs=9&name=&desc=&poititle=&poi=&uz=85042&ds=n&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&mag=9&newmag=7) for a map to Los Dos Molinos? (If that doesn't work, it looks like it's about 6 blocks south of Baseline on Central.)

How far is that from 59th Ave. and Greenway? I just blew in on a storm from North Carolina so I really don't know my way around here that well yet.

HA! Though she doesn't know I've secretly replaced lel's map with one of Kansas. Now she'll be heading to my house instead of the Phoenix Fest!

lel
04-11-2003, 12:55 AM
Okay, I tried to find driving directions but I don't seem to be able to link to them. Anyway, it's about 20-25 miles, and most of it is directly down the interstate. (I can't recall any Phoenix dopefests all that close to your area anyway, although I have missed a few. If you know of any good dopefest-type places near your area, that might be interesting!)

Besides, it's not the distance, it's the honor of meeting the Phoenix dopers. :p It would be great to meet you, Cisco! :)

PS: MamaHen, I should have known that that map of Kansas was all your fault. Now I'll end up on your doorstep, and you'll have to take me in. Ha!

Training for my new job is going ok but it is time consuming, only now I have a chance to reply that I’ll be there also.

Looking forward to May.

Here is what MapQuest returns when I ask for all the doper's locations: û

I'll bump this for no other reason to subscribe to the thread in case anyone else posts.

BTW I sent an email inviting everyone to a couple of things, easter service at our church and to watch a night shoot may 10.

Friendly reminder, the Dopefest's this weekend. Cisco -- found your way around the valley? Phlosphr, still going to be in town? flight -- do you know if your spare day is this Saturday? DaToad, is your calendar still free? Everyone else -- still planning on coming?

Another nifty note -- looks like the Houston Dopefest is at the same time.

Ok, I'm going to try my best to make it tomorrow. I assume a lot of you have met in person before? For those of us that haven't -how will we find you? Table for Cecil Adams?

I was afraid of this, the scheduling in my new job put me to work this Saturday.

There could be a chance I get out early, but I think by 5:00 pm everything will be over then at Los Dos Molinos.

It looks like the perfect streak of not meeting Padeye will be maintained..

Have a good time everyone, I hope in the next occasion I have the time.

-Ed.

Well we won't be in the same getup but here's a recent mug shot (http://padeye.net/w/wedding2/Dsc_0050.jpg) of TheLadyLion and myself.

Gigobuster, drop me a note off the board. Something coming up next week you may find interesting.

lel

Cisco, I don't have any really recent photos (I think the last time I was photographed was when Padeye got a new camera back in 2001! ), but you can just go randomly up to groups and ask if they're Dopers -- that's how I first found them!

GIGObuster -- oh man! So sorry to miss you this time and I hope to see you again soon! Sounds like the job's keeping you busy.

Padeye & TheLadyLion -- barring anything major, see you tomorrow, and that's a beautiful wedding photo!

Haha, that would be hilarious but then I would feel like a jerk if I didn't make it. I still have to dodge my brother for the rest of the day. Hmmm, he's not awake yet, should I go reserve us a table now? :)

lel
05-03-2003, 11:44 AM
Actually, I called them a few weeks ago and they said there should be no problem at this time even if we just show up, they aren't usually busy at 2 pm. But if you'd like to call them as a friendly reminder, sounds like a good idea!

Oh, you know, you can bring your brother too! :D

According to this (http://www.netmio.com/city/phoenix/cityguide/detail/0,1228,CI14-LGen-ID85299,00.html) website lunch is from 11am to 2:30pm and dinner is from 5pm to 9pm.

Does that mean they're closed between 2:30 and 5? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question but there are a few resturants back home that close between lunch and dinner. Don't know if that is a common practice :).

Greetings Phoenix Dopefest! And a courtesy bump from another 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 3rd Dopefest (Houston). Hi lel! Hi Padeye! Hi Mauvaise!

Y'all have fun!

I'm shameless.

lel

Good catch...they are in fact closed 2:30 - 5 Tuesday - Friday, but they are open all day on Saturdays, according to their answering machine. So it's still on!

By the way, I love this Cisco sign so far. :)

Cisco

Maybe if we yell really loud you can hear us down in Houston? :D

Cisco

If you're really going to hold up that sign it won't be hard to find me. Just look for the tall goofy looking guy with the really red face :D.

Believe me, I will have a sign. :o

I just have to mention that the sign is completed. Hope you enjoy it, Cisco :D

Cisco, just look for the people who look like they don't belong together (somebody posted that suggestion to an early 'fest thread).

S.O. being my wife and doper TheLadyLion, AKA Cindy or Mrs. Padeye. We're still on for 2:00 right?

lel
05-03-2003, 01:55 PM
We're still on, but I have to warn you, I might be 30-60 minutes late now...I'm running late on a few things. Anyway, see y'all at 2!

Cisco, the sign is done. I shall walk in, on time or not, proudly holding the sign in the air. :D

Ringo, I took your advice at my first Dopefest and promptly walked up to the wrong people! :o

If anything I'll be a bit early, as I'm already itching to get out of the house. What time are you going to be there, Padeye?

Cisco
05-03-2003, 02:18 PM
Wait, I'm assuming this is a traditional resturant with a "Please Wait To Be Seated" sign near the front door.

What in the world should I tell the hostess? "Table for..." ::takes off running towards the dining room:: "So long, suckers!"

Cisco

Alright, I'm just about ready to burn the road up. I've got to get some gas, return some books at the library, and check out FCBD at the comic book shop.

ETA: 2 o'clock sharp.

If anyone would be so kind as to call me with last minute details I've put my cellphone in my aim profile in binary code. You can decode it by hand or here (http://nickciske.com/tools/binary.php). My screen name is cisc0.

See you guys at 2! [I hope!]

Tell the hostess it's the Cecil Adams group. The place isn't that big. We'll figure it out. Tell them y ou'll looking for a group of computer geeks. How hard can it be?

I look forward to seeing everyone there. I'll bring a cam so we can get current mug shots of the Phoenix dopers.

Hey, I just wanted to say I had a lot of fun guys! It was really nice to meet all of you.

I went to the library afterwards. It was just as cool as you said it would be Padeye, but sadly, I forgot to check out the bathroom.

I turned North on Central when I left there expecting to see the 10 freeway but I guess I passed it on the way there and didn't even notice it :smack:. I figured I would just keep heading North on Central until I saw Thunderbird but I ran right into a mountain :smack::smack:

Oh well, obviously I made it home. I'll find my way around this place sooner or later :D.

I'll be looking forward to the next Phoenix Dopefest!

The thing about that is on central you'll go right over the top of I-10 without ever seeing it. It goes though a tunnel with a park built on top, deck park tunnel. That bridge that goes over the park just before the library also goes over I-10.

Glad you had fun. It's always nice to meet some new dopers. It's been too long since TLL and I went to a dopefest but now that the whole wedding hulabaloo is past we should be able to make some more.
