Once, I went to the United States Post Office to mail off a package, and right there, at the entrance, was a FedEx drop box. I thought that they were competitors. I mean, wouldn't that be like me seeing someone open a burrito stand outside of a Taco Bell?

I've wondered about that myself. FedEx even brags about it in their commercials.
Peace,

The Postal Service has a "Business Alliance" (http://www.usps.com/news/2001/press/pr01_alliance0110.htm) with FedEx. It is a 7 year deal for $6.3 Billion. FedEx supplies the transportation network, (its fleet of jets), to transport the USPS's Express Mail and Priority Mail. The USPS lets FedEx put its drop boxes at any one of its 30,000+ post offices.
