View Full Version : Is someone after my online identity?

This afternoon alone, I have gotten two emails desiring either a new forum password or my username for various internet applications. The requests came from IP addresses not mine, and are referring to an outdated journal of mine, and an old software forum.
Why are people querying this material? Is someone after my identity? Is it some spamming?

It probably is an attempt at password-harvesting. I can only guess why they'd be interested in a journal or a forum, but perhaps it's because many people use the same userrname/password combination for many different sites, and maybe they're really after a more valuable one; or perhaps they think you might mave personal information like an address or phone number on your registration. In any case, I'd forward the emails in question to the people in charge of the various sites with a note explaining your suspicions.

If the forum in question was Unaboard, then it's probably due to Una's adding of password retrieval software yesterday, and asking members to test it for her.

Except that the mails from my Board can only be activated if a person directly puts their e-mail in, and the mails say "UnaBoard Mailer", "from the UnaBoard", "the UnaBoard password is being re-set", and "you unacan unareset unayour unapassword unaby unadoing..." it's pretty obvious from the mails my server sends what is going on.
