Subject says it all.

Looting is a common consequence of war, and museum artifacts aren't worth delaying militarily important actions.
The best prevention is a swift victory followed by martial law.

The most priceless Iraqi artifacts consist of of a black, gooey substance.
I doubt if a single drop has been looted.
Just kidding, BTW. Nothing could've been done, short of killing everyone attempting to loot.

Well, how about this... you tell the museum employees to take those artifacts home and return them later.
Or you put some kind of a lojack tracking device on them?

The mummy's curse has occasionally worked for Egypt. Maybe they could import some for their ziggurats.

What about microdot tracking, or some sort of electronic tracker?
I think a single tank parked in front the museum would have done it. Antiquities experts had begged the administration for weeks if not months to protect the museum and explained the importance of the site. They were repeatedly assured that the museum would be protected.

I would have a stick. I would have friends with me. The friends would also have sticks. We, and our sticks, would be inside the museum. If someone attempted to loot, they would be asked to stop. Politely. If they did not, the sticks would attempt to persuade them through the demonstration of the effects of rapid deceleration of a blunt object, said deceleration to be caused by collision of the stick with the looter's head. This demonstration would be repeated as needed, accompanied by lectures on the physics and medical issues being brought up. After all, we'd be in a museum.
The looters would swiftly learn to fear and respect sticks. And those who wield them.

Post big signs saying "Looters will be shot on sight." Then hide 2-3 snipers who can cover the entiore building.
After the first few bodies have lain there for awhile, people will get the message and stop trying.
This may sound harsh, but hey, it's a war zone. Or was.

Ironically, saturating the museum with Chemical Agents would have done the trick nicely, while leaving the artifacts undamaged. :smack:

The invaders didn't have any trouble protecting the oil fields or the power stations. It would not have been a big deal to cordon off one museum.

I agree with Lizard. Shooting a few looters would have solved the problem.

I'd have all the guards dress as clowns and jump out and scare people. It'd certainly keep me 100 miles or more away. Perhaps they could also fill the place with giant spiders and tax auditors.
