So I realize that I missed the last Dopeka (sorry) and as I sit here looking at the nice weather, I think to myself, another Dopeka might be nice. We have several new members in the area, and another new one coming in it looks like. Im kinda thinking that a cookout at a park, say Longview or Jacomo? Anybody up for it?

Anyone, Anyone?

This is Baker in Topeka. I'd like to do it. I'm not at my own computer just now, but when I get home I'll get the email addresses of two folks who were at the last one, plus a new person. But auntie em and Skip Magic may be sort of busy right now!(hehehehe)

Where is Longview or Jacomo? What about having it in Topeka or Lawrence? Would that work for anyone?

psychomonkey, it looks like I can't email you. so if you have any questions email me and I can reply with info. I'll also look up the last thread about Dopeka I.

Here comes the inherent flaw in having it that far away: I cant drive there. My car will be lucky to make it out to one of the lakes. Longview is a lake in Lees summit- a very nice recreational lake, as is Jacomo although in Blue Springs. I may be able to make it out to KS, but it's doubtful. I know Stephensons was mentioned at the last one...
Ive been a little busy myself lately. What am I missing with the "busy" comment?
I dunno, Im just coming up with things. What about the Nelson, a nice art stroll?

I just moved to Kansas and live about an hour from Topeka. I'm up for meeting the Kansas Dopers. I don't know much about the area so I'll just show up as long as you give me directions from I-70.

Hey, kids! I'm interested, but it can't be until after May has flaunted us with its pale backside. Maybe a June get-together? Of course, we can all work out the time/location in the course of this thread.

As long as you all bring me gifts, what do I care about when/where it is? ;)

Besides, there seems to be a lot of new members from the KC area--hopefully we can pull them in!

By the way, the original thread from last year can be found here. (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=122940)

And the thread it spawned not but a month or so later, can be found here. (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=128743&highlight=return+dopeka)

And the thread dedicated to telling me how cute I am can't be found anywhere. But that's because Dopers are shy. All of 'em. All 34,740 of 'em.

Almost terminally shy.

Really.

Honestly.

Yup.

Hmm shall we page a few people or, should we start a new thread with an open call?

You know, since Kansas City Dopers don't normally come out in droves, they may not recgonize "Dopeka" as the fun name from the previous 'fest. What I would do, if you still want to blow the bugle, is start another thread with "Kansas City Dopefest--No Sheep This Time!" (or something similar) in the title. At the very least, I think having "Kansas City" in the title will attract more people.

Or, if you find that you don't have the time to do so, e-mail me and let me know; I'll be more than happy to start a thread. (Or I'll be happy to keep on participating in this one if you feel it's getting the number of responses you'd like.)

Either way, I'm glad you started a call for a Dopefest for this year! :)

Oh, and what you said about paging: my feeling is, yeah, if you know a Doper is from the area, and he/she has his/her e-mail address listed on the boards, go ahead and e-mail directions to this thread. Not everyone visits MPSIMS on a regular basis.

Kinda like how most people don't send me money on a regular basis. Or at all. Bastids. All of 'em!

So has my starting this thread obligated me to play hostess? Im not sure im up for such a responsibility, i mean, i need to wax the drapes, give the vacum a flea dip... I think I need to lie down.

Well, isn't there some conventional wisdom out there floating about how whomever smelt it must have dealt it?

Same concept with Dopefests. :p

Actually, everyone's welcome to meet at my Spooky Mansion (http://home.kc.rr.com/skipmagic/spookyhouse.htm) again this year, but given that you, psychomonkey, have travel restrictions, that may not be the best idea; especially since I'm assuming we can probably do better for a "halfway mark" than Kearney, Missouri. :)

This year, if we choose not to host it at my place, I suggest that we consider a bar-and-grill type place... one that serves veggies in addition to roasted flesh.

What do ya' think?

You remembered...wow.

Umm, how far is Kearney from Blue Springs, I honestly havent a clue. My restrictions arent that bad-just not driving halfway across a neighboring state is a little easier.

Good question--I'm not sure how far Blue Springs is from this here "Jesse James is dead here and loving it!" one-cowboy-gangster-town, but I'm guessing maybe 40 minutes or so. Pretty much, when it comes to travel time between towns in the metro area, I usually say 40 minutes plus/minus ten minutes. Kearney's only 10 minutes North of Liberty, and 20 minutes North of downtown Kansas City, so it ain't too far out of the way.

However, depending on who might be traveling to this shindig, we might want to meet in a more central location. Let's wait and see from where others might be coming; then we should be able to get a better idea of who can drive where.

By the way, didn't you work at the Nelson last summer? Are you still filling in at that place? Can I repeat my request about what artwork I want you to steal for me? ;)

psychomonkey
05-12-2003, 06:57 AM
Yes, I still work at the Nelson and now at Planet Sub. Cant steal any paintings, but i can get you a metric butt-load of little mayo packets., and maybe some dijon too, but only if you're nice to me.

Yeah, but is it art? :dubious:

Maybe not, but the sandwhiches I make are ;) Actually I was thinking about it, and I might be able to get a deal on catered subs if people didnt want to go the potluck route, which I wouldnt mind as long as well, you know...

So, what are we thinking, eh? Catered subs at your place, spooky ghosts at my place, or food and other sundry items at a place which will bring them to us? Am I reading that right: are you saying you might be willing to host?

However, thus far, only you, Baker, MamaHen and I have responded. Either we need to alert the other KC-area Dopers to this thread's existence, change the title (IMHO--no offense meant toward your original title, of course) through the god-like actions of a moderator (at your request, of course), or start a new thread altogether. (Still, even if this year doesn't produce the most participants, I say we can still have a pretty damn good bash, anyhow!)

Yay for Dopefests! Somehow it always looks easier when other cities are trying to get 'em together... ;)

Yeah, I just found this myself. So I'm bumping it.

Bump

Did you hear me? BUMP!

I'll come to some kinda dope mcthingy mcbob mcgettogether. I even have a book I should probably give back to Auntie em that I borrowed about four score and seven years ago (no, I haven't forgotten about it, yes, I'm a terrible person for not returning it sooner).

So when?

Well, howdy there, ya' Kansas/Missouri kinfolk! Glad to see that people started showing up for the party, here. :)

Hmm... I know that, with summer school in my district (and a few other personal possible plans profusely pervading), I might not be able to make a Dopefest until mid-July or August. What's the schedule look like for the rest of you?

And where I go, I say, auntie em goeth, too! Although, my guess is that she'll probably go wherever the hell she wants, with or without me, so I might just wait and see what she has to say when she pops into this thread; no sense if having her want to kill me for my boorish and chauvinistic ways before the marriage... ;)

I just peeked at my summer schedule and I'm free all summer. Gee it's good to be me. Actually I can't vacation due to all the pets around the HenHouse so a quick Dopefest will be just what I need to break up the long summer days at the lake.

Mmm... bacon...

Anyway, I think there are a few more Dopers from this area hanging around, yet who have dared to not see this thread and participate! So, if you see any of them in other threads, politely shove them as hard as possible this direction; that way, once we get as many people as possible (so no one's left out), we can define a more central meeting place. And work out rides if we have Dopers willing to help out--or if it's even necessary.

I say we give a new thread a shot (then link to this one)--one that specifically says "Kansas City" in the title.

I'd be willing to start it, but right now I have a meeting . . .
