View Full Version : Who Has To Die Now?

Seems as though every Rock n Roll era ends with the death (or deaths) of one of the young, widely respected icons of that era:
Buddy Holly
The Big Bopper
Richie Valens
Janice Joplin
Jim Morrison
Jimi Hendrix
Sid Vicious
John Lennon
Kurt Cobain
... to name a few.
It's been a while now, so who goes next?

Is there anybody in rock who's respected now? (And for that matter, when was Sid Vicious a widely respected icon? I think most of that happened after he died.)

Hey vl_mungo
Are you looking for a wish list?
Or mere prophecy?
I have enough bile to supply the former, but my connections to the spirit world are thankfully null.
I'm also of the opinion that 'popular' music is so fractured that any one death will not rank as an epochal marker.
I have a lot of ideas of whom should take the big eternal gig, but there are no real giants among them.

Should the hip-hop deaths of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls perhaps be added to your list?

Also what's his ass from Stone Temple Pilots.
And that Depeche Mode guy.
Biggie and Tupac are very important.

No one from Stone Temple Pilots or Depeche Mode ever died... unless you're suggesting they will. I can't tell from your context.

In the "Darth Vader killed Anakin Skywalker" sense of things, Michael Jackson is already dead, really.

What era concluded with their deaths? Is gangsta rap different now?

Yes.... Gangsta rap is pretty much dead. There aren't Gangstas anymore there are Playas. Biggie was sort of a transitional character.

I was under the impression that Scot Weiland had died.. apparently I wasn't the only one. I just read a few articles about how is death was widely reported on the internet but he is infact alive and working on a new solo albulm.
And who was the guy who hung himself? Was it the INXS guy and not the Depeche Mode guy?

The INXS guy hung himself (self asphyxiation, I think).

Madonna and Michael Jackson haven't been in the spotlight for years, so I don't think that their deaths would be too monumental. Maybe if Jennifer Lopez died, pop music would come to an end and we could get an era of good music.
(A guy can dream, can't he?)

Uh.... think about that, Diceman. Pop music = popular music. If there's no popular music.. you mean no one will like music?
Heh. It's ok, I knew what you meant.

I think Aliyah was the last death. Or was Left Eye?
