View Full Version : Name This Dog!

Well, I finally did it. Now that I'm all settled into my new apartment, I adopted a dog today. There's more red tape than you might expect - they come out to your house to interview you.
Annnnnyway, I got him. And that's allll that matters!
He was a stray and has no name. So now I have to come up with him. I can't keep saying, "Here, boy!" and whatnot forever.
He's a tricolored beagle, around 4-5 years old (maybe).
I've put a couple pics I was somehow able to take earlier today. They're at
www.geocities.com/dfranzen70/dog1.JPG
and
www.geocities.com/dfranzen70/dog2.JPG
Now, you guys don't know me all that well, so of course you're not going to know what I'd like in a dog name. So I'm not saying I'll certainly absolutely positively definitely accept whatever's mentioned here. I'm just kind of looking for suggestions!
So if you're interested, please check out either of those two pics. Please ask me whatever you want, although of course with a pound puppy, the history's rarely known.
Thanks!

They're Portuguese Water Dogs. Think of 'em as friendly, unpretentious, manly standard Poodles, and you'll have a good idea about their character.
Slightly on-topic: the majority of Porties I've encountered in the US have either aquatic or Portuguese-based names ("Splash," "Lisbon," "Rio," "Chuvo," ad nauseaum), but since mine aren't really big fans of H20, they've got just plain old dog names. "Bailey" is named after Bailey Avenue in Buffalo, New York; her registered name is "Del Sur's Dock of the Bay," conceding to the aquatic thing. Guinness (a rescue; he's supposedly AKC registered but I don't have his pedigree yet) is named after the stout.
I'll scratch 'em for you. Bailey likes gently belly rubs. Guinness that has no tickle spot; any nail-digging scratching anywhere on his body will trigger the happy twitching reflex.

I'll second "Sparky." Two syllables, sounds friendly, unlikely to be confused with a command. Besides, he just looks like a Sparky.
Some of the other names mentioned seem like Labrador names. Nothing wrong with 'em, but they don't seem like beagle names.

Hmm.... Sparky...
Now there's a bright idea!
He's very friendly, which makes it tough to type this sentence...
But here's a neat little kicker. I just took a nap, and I fully expected there to be a "problem" when I woke up. Nope, just him laying down on the blankey I got out for him....

Since this is the SDMB, how about "Doper"? Or "Cecil?"
Coldfire
05-10-2003, 07:59 PM
Since he's a dog, supposedly to be trained to listen to commands, I'd say "Ed" would be better than "Cecil". ;)

Well, he hasn't piddled or crapped since I got him. Should I take that as a sign? Maybe he's just not used to the place, although I would think that would make him pee all over the place...
I haven't had a dog since this dog (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=55982&highlight=bull), so this is all a new experience for yours truly.

I'm sorry everybody, but I can't STAND the name "Sparky"!!!
(It may be because it's an easy variation of my maiden name, and those god-dammed stuck-up bitches in junior high used to CALL ME by "C'mere, Sparky! Good dog. Ruff Ruff!!)
Two syllable perky names are good for beagles. Snoopy is SO over-used (used to work in a vet clinic) - very cliche. I've always wanted to name a dog Edgar, though. I think maybe you should wait a day or two and try to get a feel for his personality though. While some dogs may make a fine "Buster," others are just way too dignified for that. That's when you need something cool like Cecil, Edgar, Max, etc.
Just my long-winded two cents. :)

I assume you've been taking him for walks. He is, after all, not a puppy and, therefore, presumably housebroken. Are you saying he hasn't gone at all? Or, just not in the house?
If it's the latter, I'd just count my blessings. If it's the former, I'd be a little concerned, even though shelters rarely let dogs with medical problems go to new owners. It's not really clear exactly how long you've had the dog (Oh, and I like Sparky or Jacob/Jake). If it's been more than a day, with no urinary or fecal output, at all, that would worry me.

Underdog. That strikes a chord of truth, verily.
Given his performance during walkin' times, he might well be called Lungey the Great.

I was all set to name my dog "Torgo" but wound up adopting a girl so I have to wait for the next critter.
FWIW, I think Big Mean Dog™_ names are funny for cute little guys like your Beagle. Names like Spike, Hercules, Fang, Satan, Zeus & Bruno. Fido is a great overlooked name too. I've never ever met a real live dog named Fido.

Funny you mention Fido, koeeoaddi...
Our first dog (1972 or so), we named Rover. Don't look at me, I was 2.
Our second dog (1973 or so), we named Spot.
My mom swore up and down Dog #3 would be named Fido.
She lost with #3 (Rusty, who was indeed rust-colored) and with #4 (Chance, as we gave him a second chance in rescuing him from the pound).
So needless to say she's holding out for me to name this guy Fido. Don't think it'll happen!

I mentioned to the dog that I was orchestrating a worldwide campaign to find a name with him. I acknowledged that I probably should have asked his permission first, but that he didn't seem too talkative. He concurred, but he added that he'd like to say a few words to you guys, and he asked that I post the following for him:
Dear Straight Dope Gang,
My owner Dan told me you guys were trying to come up with a name for me. I appreciate it. You see, I seem to have suffered some sort of memory loss. I can't really remember who I am or where I came from. I think I'm still in shock over being sprung from the big house, but to tell the truth I'm not sure who owned me last or what they called me. I think I was on the lam for a few weeks before the shelter found me.
Let me tell you what I do know. I'm a movie fan, and my favorites are Wag the Dog and My Dog Skip. That Skip sure can act! I almost thought he was a terrier, like the video box says, but I think such a great acting feat could only be pulled off by a beagle.
I like music, too, but you may be surprised to learn that Snoop Dogg is not one of my favorites. I'm more a Three Dog Night kinda pooch.
I know I must be a hit with the ladies, too. My owner says I'm a chick magnet. I'm glad to know I serve some purpose in his pathetic little life. Ha, ha. Just kidding there, Dan.
Hey, here's a little tidbit you guys might not know. When a dog is in stir, he marks the days he's been in there by scratching the wall with his toenails. Yeah, don't act so surprised - we can count. That's how we know seven human years is roughly equal to one dog year.
Anyway, thanks again for everyone's help. I'm adjusting to real life very nicely. I'm walking my master to death, but dammit, I need my exercise. He needs to get me some toys to play with, though. See if you can talk to him about that.
Well, gotta run. ALF's on, and anything that eats cats is okay by me.
Yours very truly,
The Dog.
That photo is a riot. Thanks for the laugh!
You're welcome! I love that picture...Ozzy is totally sporting the "My...what big teeth you have!" look.
Is that "Char" as in "charcoal"?
Actually, that's "Char" as in "Charlotte". Charcoal is good, too, though! She was actually already named when we got her from the pound. I was rather disappointed by that. We already had Ozzy, so I was set on naming her--you got it--Sharon.
Adorable dogs!
The QueerGeekGirl, you have have won her heart. Compliment her dogs and she will love you forever.

I was out walking him earlier today, and he just kind of looked like a Jake all of a sudden. So I started calling him that... "Good Jake, there's a good boy, yes he is, oh yes he is, good Jake, good Jake, good Jake."
It seemed to fit.
The deal was clinched when I called up the vet later to make his first doggie appointment. She asked me what his name was, and I said... "uh.... uh..... I've been calling him Jake today..."
And so it shall be.
:)
Thanks for playing, everyone!
