So I crawled out from under my rock today...

... and watched the first Harry Potter movie for the first time.

I've also never read the books. And I slept through the 2nd movie when my friends dragged me along.

It was a pretty entertaining movie, but i do have some questions. Since y'all seem to be pretty up with HP and whatnot, I figured you'd know.

In no particular order...

7) Can someone explain some of the rules of Quidditch (sp?). I figured some of it, but what on earth are the two balls besides the main one and the Golden Snitch for? There wasn't much explanation about how they came into play.

22) When Harry drops his Invisibility cloak, how does he find it again?

and finally

3.14) The four kids are caught at Hagrid's Shack after lights out. Detention is for them to go back out and help Hagrid in the forest. This doesn't seem logical. How is this punishment? That's like cops punishing a pot smoker by shooting him up with heroin. :dubious:

Quidditch: There are three hoops, a quaffle (used to score), the snitch (ends the game when caught) and the Bludgers. The bludgers fly around randomly and try to knock players off their brooms. The beaters on each team hit them toward players on the other team. This helps keep them away from their own team members and may be an impediment to the other team.

10 points for each time the quaffle is sent through the hoop. Catching the Snitch is worth either 120 or 150 points (I don't remember right now),

Invisibility cloak: I got the impression from the books and the movies that invisibility cloaks are not truly invisible when not worn. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me either, but there ya go.

The forest: I've always wondered about this too. No real answers except it may be like suspending someone from school for skipping class.

The Golden Snitch is worth 150 points, but catching it doesn't neccessarily ensure the win - if the opposing team has scored 150+ in goals, it's possible they could still win. Throwing the Quaffle through any of the opposing team's three hoops gives 10 points.

If you notice when Harry puts on the Invisibility cloak, it has a definite colour & pattern on the outside, so it wouldn't be difficult to find if dropped on the floor. As for how it works . . . it's MAGIC, silly. ;)

The Forbidden Forest is full of nasty creatures - sending them in there is putting them at risk of death, as well as scaring the heck out of them. Seems like a pretty good punishment to me. :D
