View Full Version : Roles you'd love to see otherwise type-casted actor/actresses have

You know how it is, some actors and actresses have been typecasted, and you never get to see them sink their teeth into a different role. Maybe they'd be great in a role polar opposite of the one they always seem to play, but we never get to find out.
I myself would love to see Marc Summers play the wife-beating, child-abusing drunken asshole of a Lifetime movie. It would be interesting to see him in a role in which he didn't have to pretend to like children.
What role would you like to see a typecasted actor/actress in?

I'd like to see Leonardo DiCaprio REALLY stretch his acting muscle and play something aside from the "hot young firey male lead", such as a mentally disabled kid.
Oh wait... :D
I'd like to see Bruce Willis play a gay character. And not yer stereotypically flamboyant-wearing-purple-scarf gay character that's used for comedic effect in many a bad film... a serious, three-dimensional character.

I saw the jackal recently, and BW's character pretends he is gay, picks someone up in a gay bar and kisses him. I was quite surprised that BW would do this in a role.
The films pretty crap though.

I'd like to see Al Pacino play a gay character. Or Ben Stiller as a criminal mastermind in a heist movie.

Well, Pacino is playing gay lawyer Roy Cohn in the HBO production of "Angels in America," but I have a feeling that's not the kind of gay role you had in mind.

Your feeling would be right. More on the lines of "yer stereotypically flamboyant-wearing-purple-scarf gay character that's used for comedic effect" thanks, SPOOFE. ;)

I'd like to see some of The Sopranos gangster types (Tony Sirico, Vincent Pastore, and some of the minor characters always in the background) in roles calling for academic effeteness. Perhaps in some of the roles that Peter O'Toole, Laurence Olivier and James Mason did in the past.

James Gandolfini as Prof. Henry Higgins
Meg Ryan as a dangerous psycho nutbar (ala Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction)
Traci Lords and Shannen Doherty as sister Christian missionaries
John Ritter as a hard-nosed military man
Angelina Jolie as a hard-nosed district attorney

Jason Biggs doing Shakespeare, such as "Hamlet".

Treat Williams as a villian. Yeah, I know he's a B-list actor (but a good one), but I'd still like to see him as a villian.

A dark one, but when I read Leslie Epstein's novel King of the Jews (http://www.blackstoneaudio.com/audiobook.cfm?ID=1924) (a "the names have been changed" fictionalization of the Lodz Ghetto under Chaim Rumkowski (http://www.datasync.com/~davidg59/rumkowsk.html) , I kept thinking "Omigod, but this would be a fantastic comeback (or swansong) role for Leonard Nimoy!" (The character is an old Jewish con-artist and ersatz doctor who is given control of the Jewish ghetto and, by starving and beating them into a major cog in the Nazi war machine, prolongs their lives almost until liberation- it's one of those "was he a total bastard who needs to burn in hell or a misunderstood hero?" type tales.)
Another dark one: on the TV series QUEER AS FOLK the character Ethan (http://sho.com/queer/justin.cfm) (played by not-at-all un-hot Fab Filippo) mentioned that his grandfather played an imaginary violin while in Auschwitz, I thought it would be really interesting to learn his grandfather was a conservative rabbi who had disowned him even though he was the favorite grandson, and have the rabbi played by Mel Brooks in a dramatic cameo.
On the lighter side:
I'd love to see Harvey Feirstein and Ellen Degeneres play the proud and zealously in-love in-laws in a "Meet the Parents" style movie. The other set of parents should be played by Charo and Bob Newhart, who are having affairs with Lorenzo Lamas and Queen Latifah respectively.
I'd like to see Steve Martin play a total piece of Jerry Springer quality whitetrash.
Eddie Murphy or Will Smith as a cold blooded hitman.
For a real stretch: Tom Cruise as a three dimensional supporting character.

They did that already, and called it Magnolia.

I'd like to see Leonard Nimoy as a Bond villain. He could do no worse than Christopher Walken.

I would love to see Russell Crowe play a cross dresser. Y'know, one of those movies where he would be a manly construction worker during the day, but at night, he likes to get all frilly.
I am not sure why this appeals to me, but I blame Patrick Swayze.

Tom Hanks as a psychotic serial killer/cannibal. NOT done for laughs.
Gwyneth Paltrow as a mentally disabled person. OR- the "ugly girl" character.
Jim Carrey in ANY Shakespeare role...not comedy, not one of those modern adaptations.
TeaElle

Well, Shirley, Russell came to fame playing gay, so why not take it a step further?
But raising the evil and awful spectre of Patrick Swayze in that deplorable, disrespectful anti-drag piece of dreck is darn nigh unforgivable. Repent! :D

I'd like to see Julia Roberts play a really evil bitch....who gets horribly killed in the end. It'll never happen, I'm afraid.

I just had a mental image of Carrey as Richard II...that's either really sick, or it'd work. Or maybe I've just read that play too many times. I'm not sure which. ;)

I'd like to see Harrison Ford or Kevin Costner in an odd, manic sort of role. Think Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys or even in Snatch. I doubt they could pull it off, but it would be fun (if painful) to see them try.
tlw, your suggestion for Meg Ryan (nutbar?) is seconded. I was thinking of somthing similar for Sandra Bullock.

Hey, maybe that is why he's doing it!

I would like to see Clint Eastwood play the role of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, in a movie about the life of John of Gaunt.

And, Kevin Costner could play John's son, Henry IV.
What a great movie that would be, IMHO. :D
Christopher Lee as a hero.
Regarding Treat Williams, Mulholland Falls

I'd like to see Ed O'Neill take on a serious dramatic role, after years of playing Al Bundy. Perhaps something in the grand tradition of crime drama.

Back when I had fantasies about being a director, I wanted to make a name for myself by featuring typecasted actors or celebrities in ensembles where the entire cast has roles against type. Here's a partial list.
Woody Allen as the title character in "The Collector," with Angelina Jolie playing the increasingly demoralized victim.
Eddie Murphy as a witty gay man battling societal disapproval within the black community, who falls in love with... a closeted Denzel Washington. Including love scenes, no stunt doubles. Also starring Damon Wayans, Don Cheadle and Tiny Lister, Jr.
My four favorite dramatic black actors in one movie. Andre Braugher, Morgan Freeman and Laurence Fishburne as dangerous criminals in a period heist movie set during Reconstruction. Samuel L. Jackson is the reticient fourth man who flips and aids authorities in capturing the other three.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one on the planet who sees that Leonardo DiCaprio was put on this earth to play Orson Welles in a biopic covering the period between the formation of The Mercury Theatre and the Magnificent Ambersons fiasco.

It was hard to tell if he was the good guy or the bad guy in Skeletons in the Closet for most of the movie. However, I wouldn't mind seeing him in a role as... anything. :D I don't like the beard they make him wear on Everwood, but he's the only actor twice my age (literally) that I find really appealing. Maybe he could be a debonair playboy bachelor- with no kids with emotional/mental problems. heh.
How about Keri Russell as a young kniving young woman preying on wealthy elderly men so she can marry them, then kill them for their fortunes?

I want to see Lance Henriksen as host of a kid's show. No dark secrets, no hidden maniac killer, no irony, just Lance playing either Mr. Rogers or a Bozo-the-Clown type.
That, and I want to hear him say "I'm Coo-Coo for Cocoa Puffs" and "I don't feel fresh."

Bruce Campbell as the male lead in a romantic comedy, or in a serious biblical story.
Kevin Kline as an action hero.
Mary Stuart Masterson as an abusive, alcoholic white-trash mother.
Johnny Depp as a psycho killer.
Winona Ryder as a kleptomaniac. :D

He also battled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and hated messes of any kind. So, not only does he have to pretend to love kids, but he also has to pretend to like having all that slime dumped on him.

Rather than seeing Meg Ryan as a psycho, I'd rather see her as a faithful wife turned hooker in one of those Skinemax movies they show with astonishing regularity. This may just be me though 'cause I'd also like to see Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Christina Applegate, Sarah Michelle Gellar do the same thing ;)

And Clint Eastwood playing a flamboyant-wearing-purple-scarf gay character that's used for comedic effect.
