41, male, single women seem to hate me! :( Fuck 'em! I'm happy being alone!
There was a long, multi-paged thread about this a couple weeks ago, I'm not sure if it'd be better to just dig that up, or start a new one. But, in the event of a new one, I'll put my stuff here as well.
Age: 20
Sex: Male
State: NY

I'll bite, as fringeheads do.
Age: Too young for a mortgage, too old to get away with minor crimes.
Sex: Male.
State: Mostly colloidal liquid, with some solid materials.
Age: perfection
Sex: honey, I'm tired!
State: confusion
Well, that's what I used to say in my days of wandering about chat lines with people who kept saying "A/S/L d00dz! A/S/L, ****er!"
Now if I wanted to find a potential mate, I'd be a bit more creative and talk about other things.
Likes: moonlight walks, vegemite, shopping for bargains, sitting around stark naked and browsing the boards, cute fluffy stuff, health food stores, electronic gadgets, sappy 80s love songs, travel, mauve nail polish, discernment, sarcasm, solitude, silence, smiley faces.
Wants: Someone down-to-earth who fits no model of perfection, but is imbued with wisdom and discernment. Is okay with change, but doesn't need to change everything all the time. Can tolerate a night just sitting around reading or listening to music.
Other: I am capable of typing in complete sentences; however, I simply wanted to express my ideas above.
What will happen: We will all meet the loves of our lives right here in this thread, after it gets more posts than the thread about LOTR and more than a million views!

While I'm familiar with the concept of A/S/L as it applies to chat rooms, I'm apparently old enough that, back when I did chat online (on multi-line BBS's - no internet for me back then) nobody ever ran around asking "A/S/L?" Kids these days!

Doesn't matter, bouv, flirt/personal ad/picture threads pop up every few weeks on here. Eventually we'll just have our own SDMB Dating forum and be done with it. In the meantime:
26, Male. Look to the left for location. Look in the "Me" thread for picture.
Likes: Music, theater, aviation (of course), reading, history, science, and the occasional hanging about with friends.
Wants: More time to experience all the above, someone charming & intelligent to share it with.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be off picturing lel browsing the boards in the buff. ;)

I'm a student at Warwick university, my interests are dancing and martial arts (I teach both), meeting new people...reading and looking at the stars and music.
As far as looks go I'm not bad I guess, I maybe look a little younger than my age, I'm medium height and build, obviously in shape from all the exercise, light skin and brown hair with hazel eyes.
I'm willing to give anyone a fair chance, but I would love to meet a girl who was into the martial arts or dancing and especially into keeping fit as I find that a very attractive quality in a person.

Hi, Sunspace! I haven't seen Bollywood, Hollywood yet, but it IS in my Netflix queue. So far I've seen more of the "blockbusters" from the 80s and 90s, along with some older films starring Amitabh Bachchan (what a voice! *swoon*).
Hey Billdo, I would love to come to Manny's retirement party and meet some of my fellow single Dopers (like, um, you ;) ), especially since I missed the Woodlawn Cemetary tour. But my dad is having some outpatient surgery done that day, and I'll need to be around to pick him up and make sure things are okay once he's home. Some one of these days, though, I'll make it to a Doper gathering, I swear!
Billdo
08-30-2003, 09:42 AM
OK, sunfish, I'll accept that excuse this time, but next time . . .
Hope your dad is OK.
Oh, and beware what happened to the last single, female geologist who started going to Doper gatherings . . . circumstances caused her to leave her home and be exiled to Florida.
Of course, those circumstances were Geobabe's meeting and marrying UncleBill, so it wasn't all awful.

Okay, okay, Billdo, I promise you won't have to serve me with a subpoena or something to make me come to a Doper gathering. ;) Just seems that lately I need to figure out how to get the planets properly aligned, etc. before I can make social plans that stick.
Oh, and beware what happened to the last single, female geologist who started going to Doper gatherings . . .
Ahh, a whiff of danger in the air ... just the thing I need to spice up my life a little! :D
BTW, my dad will be fine, thanks for asking. It's a routine procedure; it's just that he's expected to be groggy and pretty uncomfortable after.

sunfish, Bollywood, Hollywood was filmed in Toronto. There's a strong South Asian community here. It was neat to recognise many of the locations. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Indian cinema, so I probably missed most of the humour and in-jokes. I did see it at the theatre in the mall, alongside a mostly-South Asian audience, so seeing how they reacted was actually quite helpful.
Can you point me to some beginner's info? :)

Sunspace, this relatively recent thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=194430&highlight=bollywood) in CS hit some of the highlights of Bollywood cinema if you'd like ideas about what other movies to rent. But definitely take a look at the newcomer's guide at http://www.bollywhat.com/ - very helpful in figuring out some of the things you'll see! The more you watch the more you be sucked in, um, the more you'll pick up naturally. ;) As something of a neophyte myself I have lots to learn yet, but I'm enjoying the journey - hope you'll find it fun too.

Bah! I scoff at your MechE! You have free time, you probably use it to sleep or something. That is just like the wastrels in the MechE department here.

Okay what can I say. I am divcorced and just looking for a casual friend and if it develops into more then that's good but I take things kind of slow. I like animals and tend to party a lot. I like doing things out of doors, have a great sense of humor and like to laugh. I love to travel and have spent a lot of time abroad. Having an open mind is a must, I don't do well with controlling or closed minded people b/c I am kind of a free thinker myself. Guess that's it.

Oh a favorite is tough. I adored LIVING in Italy. The lifestyle just suits me.
I love Paris, Prague is a beautiful city and I liked kicking around the beaches and partying with my pals in Croatia.
The Amalfi coast in southern Italy was amazing, as was a group of islands called Cinque Terre a little further north.
Have y ou ever been to Europe? Do you like to travel?

Hi mipiace!
I keep thinking your username is miapace, which means something else entirely...
Have things stabilised enough in Croatia for tourism? Or am I just assuming that, because it's next to Bosnia, Serbia, etc, it still has troubles?
In 2000 I went to Europe, starting in Scandinavia and across to England. Loved it in Scandinavia. I only saw a very small amount of Paris (basically overnight and change trains on the way to London). I've always wanted to see Prague and Berlin... Italy... Slovenia*... Australia... New Zealand... Japan...
People keep telling me how beautiful Italy is. Of course, many of them are Italian. :) Ever since studying the Coliseum in architecture school, and seeing Moebius's strange yet luminously-beautiful artwork that references Naples, I've wanted to see it.
I like to travel, but these days my dreams outstrip my budget (paying off debt, you know...). I'm planning to go to a conference in Lithuania in 2005, with maybe some additional travel and cheap Pasporta Servo hospitality-exchange lodging on the way there.
*Why Slovenia? I don't know anyone there or anything; it just looks like a cool out-of-the-way place to go.

Slovenia rocks!! Where I lived in Italy was in the north about an hour from the Slovenian border. IT's beautiful in Slovenia and not expensive either. They have a lot fo casinos if you like to gamble and what I liked to do was visit the spas. They cost about 1/4 of the price that they do here in the US so you could go and get the full Euro treatment and stay over night for a couple of hundred bucks. The people usually speak several languages (German, English, Italian, Slavic) and there are a lot of good deals on goods like crystal, lace and pottery.
There is an awesome place there I liked to go in the autumn called Lake Bled. http://www.globtour-bled.com/en/bled-intro.html (http://) That is really beautiful. Slovenia is totally under rated.
Croatia is kind of the same. I think a lot of people are afraid to go becuase they got a bad rep with the Balkan wars but there hasn't been civil unrest there in 10 years. When I first went there in 98, it was a little strange being an American there. I found myself one time in a bar with a Bosnian and two Croats. When they found out I was American and not Italian, the subject turned to war and the Bosnian man told me how MY PLANES killed his sister who had been a nun in a convent.....mmmm a little uncomfortable. I explained that I didn't own the planes and fortunately I am a chick with a big smile.....(and able to bullshit the devil if I need to) since then things have changed a lot and pretty much no one talks abotu war and no one cares. More people are interested in you spending money than anything. It's a gorgeous place for flat rocky beaches and a GREAT place to dive and they have these really cool discos out on the beach where you can dance right on the beach. You can rent a full apartment for about $25 a night and like Slovenia they speak about every language in Europe. Croatia is another undiscovered gem. http://www.villamarija.com/eng/rv.html (http://http://www.villamarija.com/eng/rv.html)

Hi, MissTake! The balmy wonderland of Minnesota? You mean South Saskatchewan?
No, I mean the wonderfully bland state of Minnesota (pronounced Min-nee-soh-tah, not Min-ah-soh-tah, tyvm ;) ). I truly do like it here as we edge into fall- cool nights warm days. I love the fact that we have four distinct seasons. I love knowing I can drive 40 minutes 1 way to be in prairie land, 40 minutes the other to be in hilly forest land.
South Saskatchewan, indeed!

I'm sorry, MissTake, after I posted that I remembered that the South Saskatchewan thing was about North Dakota. My apologies.
A few years ago some friends and I drove out west along US. 2 to (ultimately) Edmonton, and we passed through Minnesota. Unfortunately, driving in shifts, we passed through Duluth around 11 PM and Minnesota in the middle of the night, and we didn't get a real sense of what it was like. I suspect that Minnestota shares its beauty with northwestern Ontario. What I remember is how my friend, driving, was able to see all kinds of deer and other animals along the road, when I couldn't see anything.
I'd like to go back in the daytime. :)
After looking at your links, mipiace, now I really want to go to Slovenia and Croatia. :) maybe I can make a trip out of it in '05. I wonder whether our word "euphemism" has anything to do with St. Euphemia, whose cathedral is in Rovinj.
Although perhaps the main page of the Bled site souldn't say, "What is really wonderful about Slovenia is that no matter where you are it is never boring." After all, you could say the same thing about Iraq these days.
mipiace, you lived in Italy? Do you have the right to Italian residenciy or was it for university? Is it true that they take art more seriously there, in the sense of recognising it as a fundamental part of life, rather than as a frill to be jetisonned when not profitable? (Can you tell that that's one thing that bugs me about Ontario?)
BTW, if the real name of Croatia is Hrvatska, how the heck did we end up calling it Croatia?

Sunspace they call everything something different. In Italy, it's Italia and Croatia is Histrovia, the US is Stati Uniti....of course, Germans call their country Deutschland...so I don't know why everyone calls every place a different name, even city names are called something different. Venice, is Venizia etc...reading a map is really interesting too! :-)
Art is looked at completly differently in Italy. Beginning in preschool they teach art and music appreciation. Art is a big part of Italian culture and they honestly appreciate the beauty in life. So yes, Art is HUGE. Churchs are in every small village and are usually lush with art. Larger cities have great cathedrals and galleries.
I was in Italy for work which is different still. :-)

[b]mipiace, I thought the 'older college/university student' think was mostly North American. Well actually it is....but people live with their parents for a lot longer there. The whole culture is just different. Some people live with their parent and go to college well into their 30s. It is pretty unusual for Italians to marry before they are in their mid to late 30s and they don't typically leave home before they get married either.

Tech stocks are paticularly fragile (just ask my stock broker - and my portfolio is a prime example sine it is worth a bout 1/4 what it was about 4 years ago)
I'm not sure what to offer, to accomplish your goal and stay marketable. But perhaps working for a Bristish based company could be a plus. Could it help you get your foot in the door of other British based companies? Unfortuantely I think the cost of living is pretty high in the UK (not compltely sure but I'm betting some UK dopers could elaborate here) and that is going to affect your move unless a company is willing to pay your moving expenses.....pretty glum huh?

See, it's the location that gets me every time. The closest woman in this thread is MissTake (and how you doin'?), in Minnesota. I grew up in Tulsa (hi, sunfish!), so I have connections there, but it's still many many miles away.
Oh, well. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
Well, I vouch that LindyHopper is a
great guy, having met him at the one and only Montana Dopefest (all four of us). He's worth traveling to Montana for, I'm sure.
Me?
41 years old
straight male
Mensa, dogs that weigh more than 40 pounds, rafting, skiing, etc,
And I wish that this thread did me and LindyHopper some good in meeting a great gal who lives (or wants to live) in Montana.

I don't suppose either of you would be willing to relocate? Say, somewhere near the eastern edge of PA, since I'm hoping to get a job and move there in the nearish future? I don't have anything against Montana, per se (well, cold weather and shorter daylight time, but other than that . . .), but I'd have a hell of a time finding a job there. Plus it puts me thousands of miles away from both friends AND family.
Dang it, here I am, great gal and all, and I know no single males of an appropriate age within a hundred miles.
Well, ok, one. But he thinks we're both too messy to live happily ever after together. Feh.

Sex: Female
Age: 26
State: Well I am currently "between continents". I am English and have worked in Norway for almost 2 years but the corporate big bosses decided I was getting settled there with friends and a life so they decided to ship me off elsewhere. I am back at my parents in the UK waiting for my US working visa which arrived a couple of days ago. So another few days vacation and next week I am jetting off to live in Wyoming.
Sorry trying and failing to make myself sound interesting..............but it is all true

What the hell. The guy I have my eye on doesn't seem to be biting. Heeeere, fishy, fishy, fishy!
Age: 20 1/2 (physically), 45 (mentally), 15 (emotionally).
Sex: female
Location/State: Bryn Athyn (figure it out, it makes sense to me) but I wish I were in London
Let's see. I'm quite tall (cursed Swedish blood,) and not exactly slender (cursed Italian blood,) but not too bad looking, all things considered. I own over thirty bandannas. I give really good backrubs. I have an incredible tolerance for people that other people consider annoying. I don't eat dairy products. I like watching action movies, but have not seen an incredible number of them.
Important to know: In accordance with the fact that four years ago my emotional age was about six, and I had not yet been introduced to the concept of other people, my dating experience is null.
Maybe I'd better stick to my little hometown.
