View Full Version : NYC Doperfest...Redux?

SwimmingRiddles

So the semester is almost over (I have one week left. I have one week left. I have one...) and I am in dire need of a NYC trip, to spend time with my godfather (who is the most fantastic human being I know...) and wander the Village and go to Chinatown and...ooooh, I love New York.

I have a huge kick off of a major theater event in the beginning of June, so I know I'll be rehersing my ass off. However, I did tell my godfather I'd come visit in May, and I'd like to stick to my word.

So how's about a mini-doperfest either the last weekend in May (memorial day weekend, people might be going places...) or the first weekend in June. What say you all?

bump. Come on, I wanna play with the cool kids! Very informal, no countdown needed, SisterRiddles has given me the thumbs up for Memorial Day Weekend, given that she doesn't have to work. (she waitresses, it's possible she may have to.)

And Billdo: sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I am just going through the surveys now. SisterRiddles has never seen the board, much less posted here.

Come Party with Swiddles!!!

Though I can't claim to be one of the cool kids, I'd be all for another gathering. The last one was industrial payloads of fun. I don't know nothin' about nothin' as far as NYC gathering-places go, however, and can merely offer my scinitllating presence. So I must then ask:
Is Brooklyn in the house?
Strong Island in the house?
Boogie-Down in the house?
Manhattan in the house?
Is Queens in the house?
Shaolin Island in the house?
'Cause Connecticut's in the house.

Last weekend in May looks like it could happen.

First weekend in June I'm off to Chicago for the annual booksellers convention. Any of those booksellers give me any lip this time around I'm gonna remind them that they'll all be replaced by robots in another two years.

I say we bit Barnes and Nobles and demand Eve's book. I'll bring a camera. Again, I can not commit SisterRiddles presence. Though with the Swiddles herself, SisterRiddles is simply an added bonus. (I'm fun alone, but paired with her, we take over whole coffeehouses. No lie.) Any suggestions on resturants to meet? I'm having a celebratory coffee session with SisterRiddles Wednesday (we'll both be done with exams), I'll ask her to finalize her work schedual, but I'd like to do memorial weekend myself. That way I get an extra day in the city.

So where do we congregate?

Memorial Day weekend is a definite maybe. (Gotta run it by the CEO, y'know). But getting into Manhattan is the proverbial piece o' cake for me, living 30 minutes from the GWB as I do. Keep me posted, kids. When, where, what, who. I'll take care of my own how, thanks. Casual dress, I assume. I'll be the one with the red carnation.

Ah, Dreamworks. We meet again, my young friend. I wasn't going to bug you twice in a row, but since you offered and all, I'd love to crash at your place. Thanks.

And for those who asked: The response I got when I asked if I would be welcome at the last NYC Doper gathering was, "The more, the merrier." I would assume this still applies. Since no one else has said anything, I'll take it upon myself to say, "Come on down! Or up! Or over! Just watch out for the pimps and C.H.U.D.s!"

Ed Debevic's? No way. Why would ya go to a chain restaurant in the middle of NYC? Especially one that serves lousy food and tries to rush you out as quickly as possible...

Of course, my opinion doesn't count. I'll be working on the river in Mass. that weekend. :(

Because I am stupid, I did not realize that this was the Memorial Day weekend. This does not necessarily exclude me. I have to check with my family (I have one, you know) to see what they have planned. If anybody really cares, I'll come back to this thread with the results of my research.

SwimmingRiddles
05-05-2000, 12:30 PM
You know, none of this is set in stone. I'll check with SisterRiddles, but if it means meeting more people, I'd rather do it another weekend. How's the second weekend in June for people? I have a show opening the week after Memorial Day, so I could probably use the time. It's up to you guys, I want the most Dopers for my buck.

Billdo
05-05-2000, 01:46 PM
The second weekend in June is better for me, too. A lot of New Yorkers go away for Memorial Day, so that weekend may not be good for many of the other folks that might just show up without much pre-planning.

Besides, I'm hoping to take a kayak course up on the Deerfield River in Mass. (the same river Green Bean works on) on Memorial Day weekend. I'd hate to have to choose between the course and finally meeting the one-and-only true love of my life, SisterRiddles.

Bill

P.S. SaxFace, Surgo is just up in Ithica, not far from the catskills. Maybe you can take him to the Latvian weekend, too, and really get em talking.

Just a reminder folks. The second Sunday in June (the 11th this year) NY (5th Ave , in the Bronx, to be precise) is host to the annual Puerto Rican Day parade. I go just about every year. I know all you city slickers are used to crowds, but it gets NUTS! Lots of fun, I highly recommend it. But keep in mind ther may be more people buzzing around the city than usual, I know people who fly in from Puerto Rico just to attend.

P.S. Demo is flying in on the 10th and we plan on heading out that Sunday, so I don't think I or we can make it. We'll miss ya!! Have fun!

That weekend is good for me.

I'd like to make a suggestion: Might we want to do something other than sit in a smoky bar and drink beer? I don't necessarily mind sitting in a smoky bar drinking beer, and I had a great time at the last two doperfests...but I really could live without another hangover.

I don't have any finalized plans for that weekend, so I'd be up for anything. And if sitting in a smoky bar is what y'all want to do, then I'll be there with bells on.

Puerto Rican Day parade sounds like an awful lot of fun.

Hmmm...Latin men...I'm in. Perhaps a pre-parade meet (for me) and greet (for the rest of yall)? I'm still waiting on word from my Godfather that that weekend is OK for us to stay at his (huge) apartment. If not, I have oodles of family on Long Island, so I can always commute in. Any suggestions for pre-parade locals? Do we all want to attend the parade? Or do we want to do a non-smoky bar thing Sunday?

SaxFace
05-19-2000, 02:52 PM
I vote for a smoky bar with lots and lots of beer. That makes for interesting conversation to say the least.

If we're at some parade or fair or something, we're not going to talk. Plus, I haven't seen any pool tables on the streets lately.

Just my input.

How did you manage to get a hangover, Green Bean? You hardly had any alcohol at all and that's including the stuff I poured in your lap!

As for the pre-thing, Green Bean had expressed an interest in Sweet Mama's. And the Puerto Rican day parade. Well, I'm Puerto Rican (believe it or not) and if I want to see a bunch of drunken boriquas get into a knife fight, I could just go visit Abuela. But that's just my opinion.

That weekend is good for me, too. Is this a Sat/Sun event, or just one of those days? Times and places? At the risk of sounding anal, I like to know such things as this pretty far in advance. Then I can cast them in concrete and get on with the rest of my life.

FWIW, the parade idea doesn't excite me, either. I really don't like being squashed on the sidewalk by noisy drunken crowds. I prefer to be squashed in an intimate smoky bar by noisy drunken small groups.

But I'm in for that weekend.

Soulsling, I've been housesitting in Queens for the past week and I love it, especially the commute to Manhattan. I'm in Long Island City and the neighborhood is exciting and artist filled. So I'll come to Queens anytime. Why don't we have the post party at your place?

Anyway, dearest Green Bean, I would never want you to feel like a stick in the mud. Why don't we compromise and go to a restaurant? Then the smokers can smoke at the bar, but conversation would be feasible. I require gossip at these functions, you know.

Biggirl, you crack me up, as always.

Restaurant sounds great. Any ideas? I'd me more than happy to make the pilgrimage out to the Slope if anyone else wants to.

Biggirl: I managed to get a hangover because I drank an awful lotta beer. Don't ask me how much--I don't know. All I know is that every time my glass dipped below 50% full, a little gremlin *cough*saxface*cough* kept refilling it. I was pretty surprised to wake up with a hangover. In fact, I didn't even know what was wrong with me. I woke up on my brother's couch and I just kept saying over and over "I feel sooo awful." Bill realized that I had a hangover and proceeded to laugh his ass off at me. Then he went out and got bagels. Is he a great bro or what?

The weekend of the tenth and eleventh works for me! Howzabout we go to the Peculiar Pub in the village (It just sounds like a gay bar) it is a fairly large bar, has an excellent beer selection, some decent food, and is usually fairly empty on sunday afternoons. Plus, it has a good jukebox. Any other ideas? Let me know what you think!

SwimmingRiddles

SwimmingRiddles, dear, this is NYC, i've never encountered IDing at a bar other then someplace pretentious, or a club (which might usually be pretentious). Don't worry 'bout it. Niether of the last 3 places mentioned ID. The Village Idiot (a hick bar in downtown Manhattan) encourages young women to drink, and young men to drink, and old, and middle aged... etc.

The Ninth Precinct has been on a carding rampage recently. Most bars right now would card Bob Hope if he came in. We'll have to pick someplace with food service to accomodate young dopers.

And as it happens, Sidewalk is not an option fo me. No further details are available on that unfortunate little chapter in my life. But it's just as well; Green Bean probably would have checked SaxFace into the motercycles parked outside anyway, and big trouble would have ensued.

We need something for all ages, something that appeals to vegetarians, something large enough for 20 obnoxious people, something that doesn't mind if we sit and prattle on for hours, something New Yorkish.

How about Lucky Cheng's?
Or New York Noodle Town?
Or Bowery Bar?

Those are my contributions.

This place is a HUGE spot, they don't care how many people are coming. Helps to make a reservation at least the day before though, they can fit hundreds of people.
and they have vegetarian. It's one of the best in Chinatown.

Golden Dragon Restaurant Of Ny
51 Division St, New York, NY 10002
(212) 226-5087

Then there's also Herban Kitchen, on Hudson and Spring,
not strictly vegetarian, but organic, and they have lots of vegan and vegetarian dishes. It's not open sunday though.
I think the first is great. Huge space, can accomodate all of us, not expensive at all, everyone can eat. Not big on alcohol though. I also believe there's a Ruby Foos downtown. I might be mistaken.
Lucky Chengs is way overpriced and the food sucks. but its fun :)

Please, not Sunday. I'll be there even so, but I really don't want the spectre of work hanging over my head the whole time. I'd be much too well-behaved to have any fun or be any fun. Saturday, if it's all the same to most of youse others. As far as where, all the Chinese places sound good. I can do Chinese.

But...Saturday, if you have a drop of mercy in your veins.

If we go Ruby Foo's, I suggest the uptown one so we can pub crawl later. Although I'm down for authentic Chinese on Mott St. as well. And Manny, I did hear about the 9th Pct. thing.

Geez Riddles, Vegetarian and no ID. You do drink don't you? This would be a terrible waste of a good human if you didn't. :) And in NYC, if you can see over the bar in most places, you're generally OK. Hell, if you can spell "bar".....

The date: Sat, June 10th or Sun June 9thscratch that, no sunday. Those of us with jobs would prefer the Saturday date.

The place: Ruby Foo's, The Village Idiot, Peculiar's. Also mentioned: Sweet Mama's (in Brooklyn), Soulslings house (at 4 am in Queens), the Puerto Rican Day parade (in the Bronx)

The time: Hey, we haven't even got the date pinned down yet!

ok, we've got the people, we've got the date, Saturday the 10th.
Place: ?
Time: ?

I'd vote for a Chinatown resturant, then moving on to a bar in the area. We should be able to eat fairly cheaply and get food to meet most dietary needs (though probably not for cmkeller). I would suggest starting latish to give people (and particularly me, who is doing something out of town during the day) time to get there.

I'm not sure how many Ruby Foo's there are, but the one on the Upper West Side, 76th and Broadway, is routinely mobbed on a Saturday night (or any other night, for that matter). I'd think we'd do better with Chinese place downtown. Also, I think a quiet, dive bar atmosphere works best for the talking and beer-swilling we tend to do.

Can we lock and load on time and place? I'm willing to let those more familiar with Manhattan (the island, not the moderator) pick the place. Time is not real important to me, except to allow for drive time and the requisite hour to find a place to park.

I'm also writing this to bump it to the top of the MPSIMS list.

I like the Idea of the place above 21 Mott. It is a good restaurant for Dim Sum, and I also don't know what it's called. It's not a far walk to the village bars (the peculiar pub is about 15 min walk, and the food is tasty. I would prefer Saturday because of work and stuff. Any ideas on time? I would prefer early, because the bars get so crowded you can't talk easily as it gets later. Howzabout a Dim Sum Lunch?

Biggirl

Here's a little story. . .
I change my name to hide from my husband who, as of today, has not registered on this board. I go from Biggirl, very discriptive, to Pink Slinky (I am neither Pink nor Slinky). Slowly but surely everything that was Biggirl has turned into Pink Slinky. Still I think hubby may not notice since it was mostly in the Pit that Biggirl turned into Pink Slinky. Now I check this thread. Guess what?

What's the use now?

Joe, you back door sneaking spy! Show me where you posted on this thread before.

Swiddles where are you? You have called us together, yet you have abandoned us during this crucial decision making time. I'll give you until this Friday. If you don't make a final decision on the place by then, I'll do it. That's right, I'm taking over. Viva le resistance!

Dear Artist formerly known as Biggirl: remind me to tell you my father's Pinky story. I think you'll be amused.

Here is my story. SisterRiddles may have to work. But I just got an e-mail from my Godfather begging me to come, and bring anyone. He said he misses "youngblood." Ahhhh...So I am going to give ole' Sis another chance, and if she keeps waffling, I'm inviting an alternate Riddle friend for a weekend, free lodging in the upper east side, one Doper convention, and lots of time with one of the most amazing people I have ever crossed paths with, GodfatherRiddles. And the Puerto Rican parade. What could possibly be better? Anyh00, I am in for a Saturday event. How do people feel about a 7:00 PM call to arms? That way people who need to tuck the youngsters in can eat and get back in time, and those of us who might just dance the night away can do just that. As for a location, I defer to my NYC livin' counterparts. Dim Sum is fine with me, if they have vegetarian items I will be elated. Location is not a problem, hand me a bus/subway schedual and I'm fine. I'm situated in Manhatten, so I'd be pleased if we decided to stay on the rock, but whatever you locals decide on is fine. And remember, I am not yet 21, so unless Dreamworks wants to forget his oath to uphold the law and we want to point Swiddles in the direction of your friendly neighborhood fake ID guy, or a place that checks at the bar/has bouncers stupid enough to just look at the year and not the date, under 21 friendly would be apprechiated. Or I could sit on the curb and people can bring me table scraps. Whatever.

hey, i voted for you as prom queen and never got a thanx. :(
;)
7pm sounds good to me. so hows Herban Kitchen on Hudson and Spring, by the 1 or 9, C or E trains, all organic food, excellent vegan and vegetarian dishes, great meatloaf and steak as well for the carnivores, situated by several clubs, they serve alcohol, they do not ID if i say they don't (i have connections), and the clubs and bars all around within the 4 block radius won't card either.

any other suggestions?

Saturday Herban Kitchen on Hudson and Spring. 7ish. Let me just say that the starting time is just a starting point.
It's been my experience (I've been to one major Dopefest and one mini one) that people straggle in at anytime after the start time.

There should be a sign or something. We've all read of the unfortunate people who arrived at Fests and not located any Dopersters. --An aside, this really baffles me because from all I've read and seen, Dopesters are usually a loud and rambunctious crew.

Brooklyn Dopersters. Pre-meet? Waddya say?

Herban Kitchen (http://newyork.citysearch.com/E/V/NYCNY/0003/22/13/)
290 Hudson.
Closest cross street, Hudson and Spring
7pm sounds great. the place will stay open 'till about midnite if it has to, and there's plenty of great bars just across the street and down the street, all of which will accomodate all of us, even those who are younger then the law allows. :)
My now ex-girlfriend is the hostess and manager.

The reservations are set, (its not some great fancy restaurant, but i wanted to make sure we'd have a place, the garden may be open as well if it's nice out),
the hostess/managers name is Heather, (she's my ex), she's the beautiful redhead that will be seating you most likely, Brian, the friendly bartender/busboy may as well.
The chef is Jaenette Maeir, (she rocks as a chef), and Adam is the other owner of the restaurant, he'll be there as well. I think he might be a lurker actually. will find out.

Wow, you guys, thanks! I wasn't even trying to milk sympathy! She has informed me that the operation will be on the 16th, so it looks like I'll be able to make it to the event this weekend.

The tumor was caught very early and it's going to be a minor procedure and no one in the family is sweating. The only thing that sucks is that she's there alone - I wish there was more support for her in Wisconsin.

This shouldn't impede with the road trip, although the couple I'm driving out for are rethinking moving to Seattle. It's so annoying. Well, if they don't move, I'll go out to the West Coast for that week anyway.

Eve, I hope your mom's ok! Please use this as a reminder to all women to get regular checkups.

swimming riddles, don't bother driving through Manhattan on a saturday nite. you can take the green line, 4,5 or 6 down to times square, switch to the C or E, take that to spring st., and walk two blocks over to the restaurant. heck. i'll email you a map. :) if you do drive, there is a parking lot next to the restaurant.

Do you really want poor Swim to walk from the 4 or 5 train to the C or E at Times Square? She might as well walk to Hudson! I can hear the cell call now.
"Soul? It's dark and stinky and there are so many turns. Oh wait, what is that man doing in that dark corner?! Oh, never mind, he's just happy to see me."

The 1 or the 9 is right there once she gets off the shuttle.

soulsling
06-07-2000, 03:30 PM
yes pink, but the walk from the 1 and 9 to the kitchen is longer, like 4 city blocks, while the walk from the shuttle to the c or e is slightly less, and underground, with people everywhere, and safer i'd imagine. completely up to Swiddles, but the cab might be the best, $10 sounds about right. emailed you a map swiddles.

Here's the method in my madness: if I take a bus, I see where I'm going. Therefore, I will not end up in, say, JERSEY. Whereas with a subway, you hear the following "MWAAWWWAHJHJSSAAWW" over the load speaker, and are supposed to know which stop you're at. A bit more difficult.

The Brooklyn contingent will be meeting seperately and earlier. I request that upon entering the resturant, they declare, as a group: "Brooklyn in da house!"

Copious consumtion of alcohol to commence after dinner at Antarctica, which has the decided honor of the Saxface seal of approval.

So here's a little background, I'm visisting my godfather to find out about the possiblilty of a loan from him so I can quit my job, work part time and go to school full time. That conversation will probably take place Saturday. So by Saturday night, I will either feel the need to celebrate, as I will soon be a full time student, or feel the need to cry, as it appears I will be on the 10 years to a BS plan. Either way, if they let me, I'll feel like drinking.

This is all assuming I don't get lost A.) getting into the city at 10:00 tonight and B.) I don't get lost getting to the resturant tomorrow night. Anyhoo, hope to see yall then!

Pinky and I will be yaking it up at the bar, her husband will be playing the Megatouch and Uke will probably be drooling in the corner. Just kidding, he'll be looking at the Juke Box.

Hm. Still trying to figure out my subway options. I'll be coming in to Grand Central. It seems the directions you gave Swiddles might work also for me, given the map I'm looking at on the Transit Authority website.
