View Full Version : Mary Ann or Ginger?

07-31-1999, 10:04 AM
This really pisses me off. A few months ago some of my fellow cops and I got into a heated debate one night over the "Ginger vs. Mary Ann" issue after we all got done finishing up a traffic accident. I took Mary Ann's side since my premise was that I would much rather get stuck on a desert island with a "girl next door" type than a Hollywood starlet. Naturally I and a few other brave souls were immediately exiled into the minority of opinion and publicly chastised and mocked for our beliefs. The other day while playing softball one of the Ginger Faction yelled out something profane about Mary Ann, prompting me to throw a full can of beer into left field to silence the heretic. Anyway, is this a question that is deep down in the psyche for guys "Ginger v. Mary Ann"?

I never met anybody who picked Ginger.

Doesn't seem like anything to waste a full can of beer over...

07-31-1999, 01:32 PM
Mary Anne in a heartbeat. And while I'm at it, let me add that I lusted after Bailey and not Jennifer on "WKRP in Cincinatti".

Finally, Betty was hotter than Veronica.

07-31-1999, 01:59 PM
Definitely Mary Ann. Sure, Ginger was easier but Mary Ann wasn't all that innocent, plus she was much better looking.
I remember one time in the supply hut...no, I'd better not say.

07-31-1999, 02:43 PM
Mary Ann by a long shot, but every once in a while I used to think about Mrs Howell...okay, okay, maybe it was the money that was the driving force.

Veronica was hotter, and Jughead was smarter.

I also chose Betty White over Rue MacClanahan in the "Golden Girls".

Okay, maybe you detect a theme here - just to let you know I liked Jennifer in WKRP and have always been in lust with Adrienne Barbeau (sp) from Maude and the classic movies "The Fog" and Swamp Thing" -

Now that is the theme that I wish to project

Yeah, Bailey always did it for me over Jennifer on WKRP, even with her glasses on. Come to think of it, in all my teenage fantasies, she never took off her glasses.

Mary-Ann hands down. No contest.

Also, as with others, Bailey over Jennifer from WKRP.

Of course, if I could choose anybody it would be my wife. I have to include that. Married folks will understand why.

08-02-1999, 09:53 AM
I'll second Ginger. For the same reasons daniel gave.

I would much rather get stuck on a desert island with a "girl next door" type...

I live in Manhattan. Ginger is the girl next door.

Although I always preferred Jessie over Kelly on Saved by the Bell.

08-02-1999, 10:51 AM
Maryann, not even close. 90% of the guys I know agree.

Bailey, too, even though I'd be afraid of Les Nessman following us.

I wonder if Dawn Wells and Jan Smithers know of the adolescent lust they inspired. I guess so...

08-02-1999, 11:08 AM
I also agree with the Mary Anne and Bailey as being the best.

Why is it that there have been several shows that have two female roles and eventhough one is supposed to be the better looking, many would choose the other?

Personally, I felt that Mary Anne was better looking, not just the attitude.

Now on Home Improvement, I would take both Heidi and Jill.

Yeah, I have to go with Mary Ann/Jessie/Bailey/Betty/etc. etc. etc. =)

I guess I've never been attracted to the really glamorous and really beautiful women in life or in entertainment. I've always been attracted to women who are pretty but not drop-dead gorgeous. Not sure why. =)

If I was stuck in a desert island, I'd take both, that way you have the best of both worlds!

08-03-1999, 09:57 AM
Definitely Betty Sox. I like redheads, I married one, but I think Wilma's voice just annoys me too much. I like Betty's better.

08-03-1999, 06:37 PM
Mary Ann, though after all that time with those weenie men on that desert island, if Ginger begged to be included in a menage a trois I don't think I'd have the heart to say no.

Bailey, definitely. And Adrienne Barbeau.

08-05-1999, 10:59 AM
Further to the curious preference shown here for brainy women over bimbos, how can any red-blooded woman-lover not include as a preference what's her name over Chrissie on 3's Company? Wassit Janet? Chrissie you send for pretzels and beer while you find yet another way to make Janet talk about making dinner so it sounds like you're "doing it." Ahhhh. By the way, in re: 3's Company, if anyone says they would choose Mrs. Roper, I'm gonna. . . .

08-05-1999, 01:04 PM
WHAT? You would take Velma over Daphne? I agree with everyone else as far as Mary Ann, and Bailey.

But Daphne is the hands down winner from Scooby Doo.

08-05-1999, 01:13 PM
Poor misguided soul. You who would take the superficial fluff of Daphne over the exotic and ageless alure of Velma.

Like I said on the gay choice (http://www.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000167.html) thread, I like smart shorties. And Velma not only figured out all the clues, she was the shortest as well. What a hottie!

Phoebe, Monica or Rachel?

Monica needs to put on some weight...for pure delicious yumminess, it's gotta be Rachel, but for a long-term commitment, I think Phoebe would give you the most bang for your buck.

But that's a girl's opinion. A straight girl, and what do I know?

As long as we're ont he subject of yummy stars and starlets... how is it that I know only one other person besides myself, and she is also a straight woman, who thinks that Julia Roberts is the most divinely lovely and appealing creature ever to grace the planet? (If God gave me the option of looking like anyone, I wouldn't hesitate a second to pick her.) There are sexier women, hotter women, more beautiful women. But as far as I'm concerned, she is just THE "It" girl. Anyone? Is it just not "cool" to appreciate Julia, or what? And if only me and one other person feel this way, how in hell did she become the most bankable actress is history?

Julia Roberts, mmmmmmm.

I have no idea who Mary Ann and Ginger are but as the name Ginger conjures up visions of my housemate, and she reads this board, I'd better choose her :)

Oh God, do I feel old - Jinky has no idea....boo hoo hoo

Julia Roberts was posted on the thread "things I don't get" by ME - she is a one dimensional actress, not very attractive (in my opinion),and she hurt Lyle Lovett. As for why she is so bankable, look around at other things that really don't make sense (ie. Ricky Martin, Spice Girls, Courtney Love...the list is endless)

Mary Ann. But i do agree with APB9999 a nice little menage a trois hour tour now and then.
And poor jinks, I posted this in a little either or survey on another BB and 75% responded 'who?' I have a little picture of Mary Ann that definetly reinforces my conviction.

Re Julia Roberts: I agree that she's one of the greatest sights around, but isn't she downright odd looking? It seems that women with sort of unusual features (hey, she's got a huge mouth)often are very attractive.
And girls with glasses.....ahhhhhhhh yes...

I have many points to make:

a. Ginger is a redhead, I would take an semi-hot redhead over a very pretty brunette any day because redheads in the sack will ROCK YOUR WORLD. Yes it is a stereotype (i.e., red in the head, fire in bed...) but I can tell you that I'm batting 5 for 5 on the redhead theory...

b. Julia Roberts is actually an alien that can clone herself into two shapes. One is a very hot, sexy, desirable woman and the other is a big mouthed, homly, campy looking skinny thing that looks like a wet washrag. At least that's my theory...

c. Daphine started my down the path of redheads, and if you had rough sex with Velma her glasses would fall off and she would be worthless

d. Anyone who chooses anyone of the Golden Girls scares me, there like my grandma sicko

e. Rachel, rachel, rachel. My wife and I have a list of five everchanging people that we can leave each other for without any questions asked. Hers is Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, Matt Damon... One of mine is Jennifer Aniston, whoa nellie!

Jahender:

I heard a joke along the lines of your deal with your wife. A couple each has one person the other can sleep with if given the chance. The wife had Brad Pitt, and the husband had Madonna.

One day, the husband comes up and says, "I think we should change the people on our lists." His wife agrees.

"I'll change mine to Ricky Martin," she says.

"Okay. And I choose the baby-sitter..."

Mary Anne, absolutely
Bailey was the object of many of my fantasies.
And let me throw in another one. Jan Brady over Marcia.
Does anyone remember the lame "Archie" tv movie of a few years ago where Betty uttered the unforgettable line "I want to be BAD, Archie!" -- Guess that answers the riddle once and for all.

Julia Roberts is downright repulsive, and I wouldn't kiss her for money. Stoidela, jinky, et al: I support your right to think otherwise, but may I suggest a visit to your local optician?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress.

On a related note what about:
Law & Order: Jill Hennessy (sp) or Carey Lowell or Angie Harmon
I vote for Jill Hennessy

Ally McBeal: Ally, Georgia, Renee, Elaine, Ling or Nelle

I split my vote between Ling & Renee

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy, Willow, Cordelia or Faith?

It's gotta be Buffy.

Star Trek TNG: Dr. Crusher v. Counselor Troi

I don't know, I'm still thinking about Buffy :)

My crush was on Bo in 4th grade, but when I caught the reruns a couple years ago, I wondered what I was thinking. Luke, all the way. Funny how your tastes change.

VileOrb
08-24-2000, 03:20 PM
You changed your opinion? Maybe this is peculiar to women. If you're talking about how one had surgery or gained weight or whatever and that changed you attraction, thats one thing . However, to change your feelings about a recorded film is astounding to me.

Mary Ann. Always and forever.

Are there men out there who used to say one and have changed their minds? Maybe we've uncovered a significant difference between men and women.

Maybe if I had a traumatic experience with a brunette with pigtails or something. I just can't imagine changing my preferences like sugaree describes. Even when talking about shows I didn't watch much, my tastes are the same. I referred the brunette with the shorter hair tover Farrah Faucett in Charlie's Angels. I can't even remember her name but my preference has not changed. And I'm not down on blonde's, I haven't even seen an entire episode but I like Buffy over the other characters.

Is this a hijack? Should I start a new thread? I'll wait to see if anyone cares. I think that sugaree was attempting a hijack and I've now attempted a hijack in response to the hijack.

Vile (may I call you Vile?) I think that this is right on topic- after all, Shirley named her fave Brady. Yeah, I'm fickle. Maybe my husband should worry.

Bo probably is better looking, ruadh, but Luke ain't no slouch, and his IQ seems to hover closer to a 100. You could have a real conversation with him as you cruised around in the General. You could dress him and take him out of the swamp.

I think that this puts me in the Mary Ann/Bailey/Betty camp. Luke could be a buddy/soulmate.

PatrickM: Ally McBeal: Ally, Georgia, Renee, Elaine, Ling or Nelle

Renee, obviously. None of the others turns my crank. I like women who weigh more than their shoes. That's the big thing that bugs me about David E. Kelley's TV shows -- for some reason, he tends to favor these grotesque stick-insect women. (C.f. Lara Flynn Boyle on "The Practice.")

And I don't get the Julia Roberts thing either. I think she's a talented movie personality (not actor), and can hold down the center of a film through sheer force of charm, but I don't find her spectacularly attractive or anything. Now, Gina Gershon, there's a different story... rrowwrrr...

I could see myself in a long term relation ship with Mary Anne, but before getting committed, I would definitely make it a point to enjoy Ginger in as many ways as possible. On a strict basis of attractiveness, I think Ginger is more attractive, even though I'm usually not one for glamour. Mary Anne's forehead kind of creeps me out.

Rachel over Monica/Phoebe
Buffy over Willow (since I've no idea what he other two look like)

Betty over Veronica

Of of the three original Saved By the Bell lasses, I think I'll take the dark horse candidate and go with Lisa. No pun intended.

I'd suggest this should be in Great Debates except for the fact that I think Mary-Ann is so far ahead it's laughable.

Mary Anne or Ginger is just too hard a choice. But Bailey Quarters all the way over Jennifer. I think Wilma beats out Betty, and Velma has the edge over Daphne in my book.

But nobody's even mentioned the most pressing concern of all time:
Marcia vs. Jan !

I'd go for Jan, sure she was gawky and neuotic for most of the series, but in the later episodes (the post glasses final year of the show) Jan was looking a hell of a lot hotter than Marcia. Plus, I always imagined that all her neurotic teen angst might manifest itself in wild unbridled sexual heat if she ever met a real live "George Glass." Marcia would most likely just lay there in the holy cross position out of fear of chipping a nail or something.

What? the fact that i'm a 30 year old gay guy doesn't mean I can't have an opinion in the matter!

08-25-2000, 02:10 PM
Oh, I'd GO with Ginger, but I'd be THINKIN' about Mary Ann.

fat angel, you're talking about being attracted to Wilma Flintstone. Now that's just crazy. I mean, you know nothing's gonna happen, right?

She'll never leave Fred and you know it.

Me!! Joe!!!
08-25-2000, 03:01 PM
Oh Robot Arm,
Don't you dare denigate the deep all-pervading spiritual bond between me and Wilma! She never loved Fred, she was pressured into marriage to him after a wild drunken fling in Rock Vegas in which she feared she got knocked up by him! We met when she was working as a cigarette girl and I was a blackjack table dealer, but despite our instant chemistry, she foolishly doubted my love for her. She mistakenly believed I was taking up with Betty on the side, and in a desperate effort to forget me, hopped on top of the first lunkheaded construction worker that came schlepping into the casino. Foolishly, after she realized she was "late", she confessed her fears to her mother, who bullied the two into a shotgun wedding. Alas, Wilma discovered a day too late there was no Li'l Pebbles on the way, and was trapped in a loveless marriage. But our hearts continue to beat as one from the prehistoric days until today!

The earth isn't round either. Yep, It's shaped like a burrito!

Now excuse me while I go take my medication...
