This (http://www.drudgereport.com/mattsb.htm) is currently screaming, front page news on the Drudge Report:
DISNEY'S NEW SANTA: DRINKS, ROBS, SWEARS AND HAS SEX
**Exclusive**
Top DISNEY executives continue to grow more and more disillusioned by subsidiary studio MIRAMAX, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, this time over a controversial interpretation of a post-modern Santa Claus!
Just weeks after releasing Quentin Tarantino's shock-samuri-slasher KILL BILL, the DISNEY family will distribute a twisted update of Miracle On 34th Street, BAD SANTA, featuring Santa Claus as you've never seen him before!
MORE
Santa Claus, played by Billy Bob Thornton, is shown, drinking, sexing and robbing his way through the holidays.
Drudge goes on and on in this vein but his outrage and panic is untainted by one very important fact:
THE MOVIE IS NOT ABOUT SANTA CLAUS!
Billy Bob plays a conman who poses as a department store Santa. It is not, as Drudge alleges, an "interpretation of a post-modern Santa." Santa Claus is not in this movie. Santa Claus does not exist in this movie's universe.. Drudge does not point this out anywhere in his alarmist "report." He refers only to "Santa" throughout. Matt Drudge is a fucking lying asshole.
For those who don't know, Bad Santa (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0307987/) is a forthcoming dark comedy from director, Terry Zwigoff (Crumb, Ghost World). Zwigoff is a genius. Drudge is a tool.
Also, Kill Bill kicked ass. Fuck you Drudge.

Get a grip. First of all, Santa doesn't exist. Second, if Billy Bob Thornton does in fact play a department store Santa, it has something in common with Miracle on 34th Street. And last, we know that Drudge is a big time conservative, so rather than hiding behind some Santa charade, why don't you just say that he's full of shit and be done with it?
The lengths that you guys go to to cover up what you really mean astonish me. Geez.

The piece is written so as to give the impression that Thornton is actually playing the character of "Santa Claus" and that Miramax is somehow corrupting that mythology through some sort of post-modern. amoral revisionism. The piece is deliberately misleading. It's a slanderous attack on Miramax. It accuses them of something that is untrue.

I've seen santa drink, sex, and rob his way through the holidays. Besides in real life, there was also Trading Places 20 years ago.

I worked as a santa one christmas. After a day spent at a Santa-skate, a vist to an old folks home and a group home for developmentally delayed adults my "helpers" and I desperatly needed a drink. One of my elves had driven, sadly the older my elves got the longer their skirts were, so I didnt have a change of clothes so we went to the tavern in costume as we walked in there were two kids waitning for a bus on of them said "Santas gonna get drunk" and were the ever right. If you go into a bar dressed like a santa in December your drinks are free. So I guess I was an evil Santa too.

Sorry for being sarcastic. I suppose I should congratulate you for saving the world by exposing Drudge's evil Santa Agenda.
So ...... uh ....... thanks.

It's worth mentioning that when Silent Night, Deadly Night was released, it caused a tremendous controversy because it was "desecrating" a childhood icon. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Drudge remembers that controversy, and is hoping that starting a new one will get more people to pay attention to him.

There are at least three alternate Santa movies making the rounds this year already, including one other Santa-as-robber.
What I'd like to see is a movie about the 1927 Santa Claus bank robbery in Texas (http://www.ciscotx.com/ciscopd/santaclaus.html), a caper which resulted in six deaths, a massive manhunt and a lynching. Now there's a salutary holiday tale for the kiddies.

Will your next pitting be that of the local italian restaurant because they don't have sushi on the menu? If you don't like what they have to offer, don't go back.
Something I read a few weeks ago: The constitutional protection accorded to the freedom of speech and of the press is not based on the naive belief that speech can do no harm but on the confidence that the benefits society reaps from the free flow of ideas outweigh the costs society endures by receiving reprehensible or dangerous ideas. Appellate Court: Texas v. Flynt
I may not like what you say, print, or put on your site, but I'll defend your right to do so. If I fail to act in your protection, my own freedoms of expression are compromised.

Partisan as all get out, and so what? In both instances, they are a compilation of news from other sources, just a link-box. In both instances, the headlines tend to be hysterically exaggerated, but I'm a big boy, I can take it.

Libel is not protected free speech.
Drudge was instrumental in killing the CBS Reagan movie. Writing a dishonest report about this movie could conceivably hurt its box office. It's not a question of just disagreeing with Drudge, he's flat out lying this time.

There's nothing political about this rant. I read Drudge every day. His politics don't bother me and he gets a lot of good scoops. I just think that in this case he's really distorting the facts and may potentially damage the commercial viability of a director that I like and who doesn't deserve this crap. Right and left has nothing to do with it.

Diog, bad publicity is good publicity. People who would otherwise never have heard of this movie are now interested in seeing if it's as bad as all that.
Miramax is looking at this and saying, "Hey, we don't have to spend as much to advertise the movie. Yay!"
If it hadn't been for the outrage, nobody would have seen Last Temptation of Christ.

Right up there with the idiots are Fox News giving Al Franken all the free P.R. The fact that Drudge laughably biased is old news- the fact he is none too bright is somewhat surprising.
But honestly- does it matter? His 15 minutes of fame is just about over.
Diogenes the Cynic
11-17-2003, 12:20 PM
I see your point but Drudge did damage CBS with his reports about the Reagan movie. I'm worried that his less than honest reports about Bad santa will fuel yet another barrage of right-wing media assaults and drive down potential box office. I have no doubt that Bill O'Reilly will make it part of his "Talking Points" memo and legions of Fox fans, etc. will stay away from the film for the wrong reasons.
Incidentally, I can understand why people would think that I'm just using this as an excuse to attack Drudge for poitical reasons. I realize that I may have let slip a hint or two about my own political sensibilities from time to time but really, in this one case I'm just pissed about seeing someone publicly trash a movie without just cause.
I really haven't had anything against Matt Drudge in the past and IMO he hasn't been shy about releasing some pretty nasty stuff about conservatives on his site as well as liberals. I posted this rant as a movie lover not as a liberal.

Ah, good times. Good times...
Anyway, Guin, don't speak too soon. If I remember correctly, at the end of the song there was mention of Mrs. Claus selling the movie rights. So I guess we'll have to wait until CBS releases the docu-drama "Red, White, and Bloody: The Claus Story". Then we'll see Drudge drudge-up this exchange:
Mrs. Claus: But, Honey, what about the non-gentile girls and boys?
Mr. Claus: Those who live in Jehova, die with coal in their stockings.

The article describes what anonymous studio folk are outraged about. The article isn't about condemning the movie, it's about what makes it outrageous to some.
Drudge may have splashed the banner across the top of his page in big, bold style; but is anyone questioning the facts of the article? Is anyone questioning whether some studio folk are outraged that a movie produced by a part of the Disney empire shows Santa Claus getting drunk and screwing a barmaid he just met?
It won't keep me from seeing the movie. I read the article when he posted it and chuckled that people are going to get so twisted about it. I thought it sounded like another Shakes the Clown.
I didn't think Drudge was trying to get the movie killed. I think he was just muckraking again, which is what he does.

Yes. I am questioning the facts of the article. The movie does not show "Santa Claus" doing any of those things. The movie shows a criminal doing those things. The criminal happens to work as a mall Santa but that's not the same as showing the character of "Santa" doing those things. I think it's a valid distinction and it's a distinction that Drudge doesn't reveal in the article.

Yeah, Grudge is a jerk. But, to be fair, many's the time I've seen him showcase news that was entirely disfavorable to his political alignment, and that should be credited. I check in on him every day, just before or after Buzzflash, whose hysterical headliness bring me to blush. Anyday now, I expect to see "Cheney stuffs kittens into blenders for Haliburton...."

Sleazefest?
It sounded like a fairly accurate representation to me. Even the "live in sin die in sin" line, while not an exact quote wasn't that different than something Reagan actually did say once. Edmund Morris' biography quoted him as saying that "Maybe the Lord brought down this plague” because illicit sex is against the Ten Commandments.”
Some of his closest advisors and associates were also outspoken homophobes including his chief domestic policy advisor, Gary Bauer as well as the likes of Jerry Falwell.
The rest of the stuff that was supposedly "outrageous" was also basically true. Nancy Reagan was indeed very controlling, did hypocritically gobble pills while preaching "Just say no," and did use an astrologer to set official schedules.
Actually, I would argue that the movie sounds rather more softball than particularly aggressive since it repotedly makes no mention of Iran-Contra or Reagan's support of Osama bin Laden, the Afghan rebels who later became the Taliban and Saddam Hussein.
