View Full Version : I attack The Darkness!

The band, that is. (http://www.thedarknessrock.com/) Based on the name alone, I can't help thinking of Galstaff, Sorcer of Light (http://www.ifilm.com/filmdetail?ifilmid=220487), but the lameness doesn't end there, oh no. Their current "hit", I Believe In A Thing Called Love, makes me believe in a thing called Suck. The video is some kind of bastard hybrid of Bohemian Rhapsody and Flash Gordon. In fact, this band resembles Queen, except for the sucking part. If they sucked any more, they would have go to Druidia and switch to Blow.

Oh, this ought to be fun.
I was just listening to The Darkness's album, "Permission to Land," that I bought off iTunes. I LOVE it. It's so refreshing to hear a band that sounds like it's actually having fun, has actual guitar solos, has a lead singer with amazing vocal range, and has songs with catchy lyrics and hooks galore.
As for your criticism, sturmhauke, I just plain disagree. Queen is an obvious influence, of course, but I think they really have a distinct sound of their own (thanks mainly to the vocals) but also synthesize some good elements of AC/DC and KISS.
The Darkness is FUN. A lot of FUN. Their lyrics are pure pop, their music is a great hybrid of glam and metal, and it all comes together really well.
Dude, lighten up. :)

The Darkness rulez!!! Woooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
I love 'em. Grasping the essential appeal of The Darkess requires a real leap of faith from the listener, a suspension of normal critical faculties, and a willingness to just enjoy some big dumb rock, even while being kind of amused at the big dumbness at the same time.
It's 1974. You have long feathered hair, a thin mustache, and you're sitting on the hood of your Trans Am with a 12-pack of Miller Lite and rocking the fuck out to the Darkness, man. You lean back and listen to that singer wail, dude. You think "It's like opera, you know? Like fucking super rock sci-fi opera, with guitars of pure energy and drums that rock like Gibraltar." You are cheezy and lame, yet you rule incontrovertibly. Dig it?
They don't like to be classified as a joke band, but they kind of are. You just have to be able to think that something is hilarious, yet awesome simultaneously.

The Darkness. The best thing I can say about them is that they aren't The Rapture.

I love The Darkness.
But, as it turns out, I'm not the only one who dislikes The Rapture!

You may perhaps want to investigate my Galstaff link at the top there, next to the Cheetos.

See, I just can't get past that part of the sentence. I suppose it's because I hadn't even been born in 1974.

i wasn't much of a fan of them either until i got a ticket to see them in concert last week, but they rocked big style, man, and im not really a fan of live music. The lead singer looks like he should be fronting a band called The Wussness.

The album is actually quite good, even if I dont particularly like them and have resisted buying the album myself. They have a certain talent for sure, and i do like their Christmas Song.

My opinion of them drops substantially every time I see an interview with them. Either they think far too much of themselves, or they're pretending that they do and are failing to indicate that it's a joke. Either way, they are annoying people whose music goes from entertaining to grating very quickly indeed.

They're the ultimate tribute band (try to name a classic rock band they don't owe something to). But hell they're more fun than Kylie (or Korn come to that). I guess they will piss off all the nu-metal heads who think rock music has to mean something*, preferably something angry.
*like, have a message, man.

They have a silly side, but they make good music that rocks. I like them.

I tend to think of them as "Queen meets Spinal Tap". They're a fun band. No more, no less.

So what is this band The Rapture that even you Darkness fans hate? I've never heard of them.

*like, have a message, man. This is probably the problem many people have with rock today in the post-grunge era. Post-grunge rock is SOOO serious and takes itself way too seriously, as well. I guess you can blame Pearl Jam for this, even though I hold them in high regard. But all the "bland-rock" bands that have come after them just don't sound like they're having fun. In fact, their lead singers often sound like they're popping a squat while singing. Creed, obviously, is the worst offender.
Maybe that's why a lot of people are embracing a band like The Darkness, including people who like a lot of critically-praised, obscure, or indie music. I know that's why I like them. When I want to have that transcendant, mind-expanding, thought-provoking musical experience, I'll listen to Radiohead (which I do. a lot.). But when I want something fun to play while I'm, I dunno, folding laundry or whatever, The Darkness suits me just fine. And I know if I had a car, it'd be awesome driving music.

I love the darkness! Are they actually number one now (in England) or has Gary Jules beaten them? It says something different everywhere i look (which i admit is only two places. I don't want to know *that* much).

I think "Mad World" has edged out The Darkness in the final count for the Xmas #1. Which is fine by me (although I was kind of annoyed that Avid Merrion's "Proper Crimbo" wasn't in the running). Just as long as none of the Pop Idol people got it.

I saw the video on M2 (on the spaceship). . .I found myself watching it with a smile on my face. If that's what they were going for, then I think they succeeded.

I remember hearing them on the radio and thinking they suck. Then I saw the video and realized how great these guys are. They're not necessarily a joke band, but they are having a lot of fun with it, and I really respect that. Too many people take themselves seriously, that it's nice to see some people getting out and doing things like this with the whole spirit of their venture being to be silly and goofy and to just enjoy it. It's like watching a really bad movie, where everyone involved knows it's a bad movie, and doesn't try to make it anything but something to have fun with (like Dude, Where's My Car or Jason X).
Sure, the music sucks, but that's kinda the point, and they know it. That's what makes them great, and not just another shitty band.

I remember hearing them on the radio and thinking they suck. Then I saw the video and realized just how much they suck. I don't have anything against silly and goofy, but they still suck.

I think what we have here is a dictionary example of "you're gonna really love it or really hate it". There's a lot of strong feelings with not much middle ground.

Oh christ, that song? I found myself kinda groovin along with that guitar part from "house of the jealous lovers" (don't know if thats the song title, and honestly don't give even one fraction of a shit).
Then the vocals started. Holy crap, BADBADBAD.

I've got part two, but I can't seem to find it linked anywhere. Incidentally, my favorite D&D Deadalewives bit is the one involving Final Fantasy cartoons... (http://www.cliveblackledge.com/8bit/8bitDandD.html)
