I know he smoked cigarettes in the teacher's bathroom. I know he got stoned when he was older. Did the writers ever give any subtle hints to the viewer that he did smoke in his teens (in past and/or present)? Was there ever any indirect refrences to it?
Did they have a flashback scenes in the episode where Homer indulges, with him as a teen smoking pot?

Umm... Yes. At least a few references. Off the top of my head :

1) In the episode in which Homer is prescribed weed, he flashes back to his "bad drug experience" under the bleachers with Lenny and Carl.

2) In (I think) the Be Sharps episode, Bart gets a "pencil holder" at the swap meet, which is actually a bong. Homer says "Heh heh! I haven't seen a bong in years!"

There may be more...

They've often shown that Homer was nowhere near as cool as he'd like to think he was in high school. Two specific references -

1. flashback scene - two girls walk up to teenaged Homer. Girl #1: "I think you're COOL Homer Simpson." Girl #2 (as they walk away): "That was mean!"

2. flashback scene - 70s high school jock shows off his party van with black strobe lights. He and his friends start 'rockin' out' to Eddie Winter, Homer walks up, every one gives him an icy stare, Homer walks away.

It's pretty obvious he was a teenybopper in high school and had a deluded image of himself as being a rebel. I think it's doubtful that he smoked pot as a teenager.

Homer attempted to smoke pot once, according to Weekend at Burnsie's, an episode which chronicles his need for medicinal marijuana. (A bunch of crows pecked his eyes. Homer was befriending the crows. Don't ask me, that's Homer for you.) Lenny and Carl were out by the bleachers smoking pot, when Homer tried some. Chief Wiggum came by. Lenny told Homer to "crotch the weed." Misinterpreting this, Homer put the weed near his crotch. Wiggum's drug-sniffing dog grabbed Homer by the crotch and tossed him around. After this, I believe Homer never tried to smoke pot again, until he was prescribed it.

Let me get this straight, y'all are trying to find continuity in The Simpsons?

Well, he did say, when speaking of poison ivy, "Leaves of three, let me be; leaves of four, give me more!"

That doesn't mean he smoked pot as a youngster, nor does his familiarity with bongs, but they are both possible evidence. (For example, I've seen bongs and know the rhyme, but I've never indulged myself.)

Erm...doesn't marijuana have five (or, in some cases, seven) leaves?

I don't think it's ever implied Homer did drugs in high school.

However, when he was seventeen, he drank some very good beer. He drank some very good beer he purchased, with a fake ID. His name was Bryan McGee. He stayed up listening to Queen. When he was seventeen....

Yes, but he didn't inhale.

Homer's always been more of a boozer than a pothead.

Was Homer referring to Pot, or Clover?
