View Full Version : Guys - Which X-mas gift would you rather have?

Alright, I'm trying to decide which of following to get DH for xmas and I'm not sure what one to go with... so I thought I'd get some opinions.
So would you rather have:
2 or 3 PS2 games that you really want?
OR
A shotgun that you really want?
I need to decide tonight. I know he wants all of them, but I can only afford to go with one or the other. The gun is expensive, so I can't go with the gun & 1 game either.

Well, of course we don't know DH or anything, but personally I like fewer bigger longer lasting presents over more smaller and more consumable ones (both on the giving and receiving end). The games would be fun for a while, but in a year's time, he'd probably have played them as much as they're good for and moved on to something else. The shotgun, he'd have for decades, and every time he shot a goose/ duck/ grouse/ clay target, he'd remember your kind generosity on Christmas in 2003...

Another vote for weaponry!

Yeah - I'd go with the gun, for reasons stated by viking.
Just make sure it is exactly what he wants - or can be exchanged.
Over the course of his life, I'll be he owns a lot more games - and gets them as gifts from a number of sources of various closeness to him - than shotguns. That alone makes the gun more special.
Plus, if your relationship turns sour, he wouldn't be able to off you with a computer game you gave him. No reason to preclude the possibility of that type of irony. (Just trying to shed a joyful light on this special season!)

LOL maybe I should go with the game then :D
He showed me the gun he wants, said it was one that he's wanted since he was a kid... The whole idea of buying it kinda scares me. That whole background check thing gives me the creeps (and no, I'm not a criminal or anything).

But my wife wouldn't... :(

I'd take the games, but that's because I have no interest in guns. :)
At least the games are something you two could enjoy together.

Just wondering, with waiting periods and whatnot, are you going to be able to get the gun in time for x-mas?
Cue Homer: "But I'm angry NOW!"

Oh yeah - aren't you afraid he'll shoot his eye out?

Another vote for the shotgun. It is a gift that he will have for the rest of his life and, if he has one, it is something that he can pass on to a child. My children will learn to shoot on an old single-shot .22 that belonged to their great-great-grandfather. Pretty cool.

Damn Dinsdale....
"You'll put your eye out, Kid"...beat me to it.
Ya know, at first, I was doing the anti-gun thing (It's frigin Xmas")
but, as a lasting gift, I guess I hafta go for the gun.
PS2's last a season, but a gun is gift that keeps on giving....

I would rather have the videogame, personally, because I'm not big on guns. (That, and the last time I fired a shotgun I hurt my shoulder and looked really silly doing it.)
In his case, though, it depends on how you want him to use the gift. Like others said, if you like videogames too, you can play them with him. The games will get old eventually, and he/you will stop playing them--but if you want to have them as a way to have fun with him now, go for it. The shotgun is something you won't be able to share with him (assuming from your queasiness about buying it that you're not the hunting and/or homicide type), but he'll have it for a long time (assuming it doesn't break) and he'll think of you whenever he uses it.

Is it an over-under?
Just kidding. Shotgun. Easy.
He'll be able to blow the PS2 to smithereens 5 years from now when it's an antique.

As a practical matter, it's easier to acquire the games one at a time later on. Kinda hard to buy half a shotgun, though. :)

I asked a good guy friend of mine, and he sad he'd prefer the games because he'd get more use out of them, than the gun, although he said "owning a shotgun would be pretty sweet". hehe..

Games get old. He will shelve them after the system becomes arcane.
Shotgun! Every shot he fires will make him think of you, or turkeys.

I'd rather have the shotgun. Then I can get my own games, or liquor or damn near whatever I wants.
Merry Christmas.

Another vote for the shotgun. Once the PS2 gets replaced with PS 3/4/5, he'll be able to have a bit of target practice.

It's also easier to find video games on ebay in six months. I go for shotgun. It won't be obsolete in three years.

Could I have the shotgun please as I am up to my neck in bunnies as the foxes seem to have disapeared this season.

If he has a place where he'll use it, I vote shotgun. With some care, it'll last a lifetime and beyond.
And speaking as a guy, something that goes BOOM and makes smoke is way, way cooler than a few games.

Figure it this way: which does he spend more time doing, hunting or playing video games? Which does he seem to enjoy more?

Shotgun. It'll hold its value and will be around for a long time. It'll remind him of who got it whenever its handled. Plus a shotgun is metal and will take better to engraving than a PS2 disc.

My husband will take weapons of mass destruction over a pussy-boy video game any day. I wish he was more of a pussy-boy, but in reality, all he does is "collect" WMD...he never actually goes shooting or or stabbing or anything. They're simply something he acquires.

Another vote for the shotgun.
The Piratess and I got each other weapons (a shotgun for her, and a black powder pistol for me) over 20 years ago for Christmas gifts. Those are the only gifts from that time that we still regularly use. Video games? Meh.
As far as the waiting period - AFAIK you can walk out with a shotgun the same day out here. Pistols have a waiting period, but unless it has changed recently there are none for shotguns. YMMV.

1. Ask yourself: Is he more into Ted Nugent or Fosajiro Yamaguchi?
2. Check elsewhere on SDMB for "Left Behind" end-times thread. When the Beast of Babylon comes a-calling, your SO will feel silly with nothing but a game controller in his mitts.

Shotgun.
He will never forget your love.
It will be something his great grandchildren will remember you by.
Although it will considerably lessen any resale value, you can even engrave it: "to DH with love, from Scarlet, Christmas 2003"
(...and hopefully, he will buy you a shotgun, or a pearl and red rose handled silver revolver, for your next birthday!)

So Scarlet, it's now xmas - can we inquire which gift it was that you decided on?
