View Full Version : Montreal Sugardope II : March 12 to 14

As suggested by scott evil in this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=233203) , I opened a new thread with more precise information and sceduling. So far, this has been decided :
Friday, March 12th
Supper at St-Hubert, located 1019 Ste-Catherine East (corner Amherst) at 8 : 15 PM, reservations under the name Cecil Adams followed by karaoke at Club Date.
Saturday, March 13th
Lunch at cabane a sucre L'Hermine (http://english.montrealplus.ca/portal/profile.do?profileID=451987) at 2 : 30 PM (if we show up earlier, they may be able to serve us sooner), under the name Cecil Adams also.
Supper at a pizza place in the gay village (scott evil is in charge of the reservation)
Sunday, March 14th
St-Patrick's day parade, followed by meal and, maybe, visit to the McCord museum, depending on the time.
Sunspace
02-12-2004, 01:21 PM
So, do I have to be gay or evil to come to this? :)
Like the last time, I'll probably be able to get to the Sugar Cabin, but not much else. Still a long drive from Niagara Falls... :(
scott evil
02-12-2004, 04:30 PM
Yeah, I'll see if that pizza place on Amherst & Ste-Catherine (right across the street from St-Hub's, actually) takes reservations. Either that or Pizzadélic, but perhaps not the one in the Village. In any case, it'll be a place with so-called gourmet pizza, meaning very light crust, interesting toppings. :)

So, do I have to be gay or evil to come to this? :)
Neither, it's more a "come as you are" event.
Eonwe
02-12-2004, 06:59 PM
Ok, I'm definitely there the 13th... can't make the 12th.
scott evil
02-13-2004, 10:58 AM
We need to make a list of attendees and populate it. ;)
We have the usual Montreal crew: me, detop, matt, kfl & U_D_Amber, LaurAnge, Daerlyn. Perhaps others will come out of the woodwork...
From Ottawa, we have UltraStud CuriousCanuck, my brilliant & faithful writing partner. Everyone else from Ottawa has been abducted by either aliens or Minnesotans.
From Toronto, Sunspace might make it... It would be nice if, say, Eats_Crayons could join us.
From other exotic locales, Eonwe (but only for like twenty minutes, as usual ;)), JeffB, clayton_e (if he hasn't gone AWOL), Duke.
In the original thread, roxx222 from here and haardvark from Kingston expressed interest, but we haven't heard from them since. I'll email them. :)
Anyway, that's around 14 so far. detop, for what number did you make the reservations?
detop
02-13-2004, 06:44 PM
I made reservations for 25 in both places, just in case some SOs decide to join us as well as other interested dopers.
BTW, my friend maf has agreed to supply a ride, like last year.
scott evil
02-13-2004, 11:10 PM
Yeah, rides. Essential. Glad maf will be along again this year. Let's see, we also have JeffB and CuriousCanuck who have cars.
I still think more people should come to Sugardope. Please come to Sugardope. Sugardope is good. If, um, three more people commit to coming (no one who's already posted), I will sing Helen Reddy's 1970s hit "I Am Woman" at Club Date.
Eonwe

I'm not sure of my plans at this point, but I think Saturday will work, and both Friday and Sunday are possibilities.

If we tell the ppl at St. Hub that it's my berfday, will they do something special? :p

I would also like to add that Eonwe sucks because:
1)He won't be there for my birthday
2)He dissed Madonna
3)scott evil said so.
I think he's just going to have to make up for his suckage by giving me a GIANT hug when he sees me.
Eonwe
02-15-2004, 11:07 PM
Haha! I knew you'd be holding a grudge!
It's your birthday that Friday?
Sure I'll give you a hug, and since it'll be the day after your birthday, I won't even charge you for the first one!
scott evil
02-17-2004, 05:33 AM
More people should come to Sugardope.
JeffB
02-18-2004, 12:23 PM
Time to bump this back up.
Things are starting to come together for me. Saturday's a definite, and Sunday's very likely. Friday is probably not. I'm also in touch with clayton_e about a possible ride, so hopefully that will work out.

No. Eonwe sucks because he's never in town long enough.

detop, call L'Hermine to make sure the Barney music is playing when we arrive.
More people should come to Sugardope.
detop
02-20-2004, 07:25 AM
scott, I truly don't understand. One sentence you ask people to come to Sugardope, the other you try to scare them away by requesting the Barney song    :D

02-20-2004, 12:04 PM
Hey, I just wrote back to Jeff, looks like I'll be able to get a ride with him..
Looking forward to seeing everyone :)
scott evil
02-21-2004, 12:18 PM
When will the JeffB/clayton_e caravan be arriving in town and leaving?
scott evil
02-24-2004, 05:39 AM
Maybe we should compile a list of attendees, or something...
Daerlyn
02-27-2004, 05:56 PM
Attendee one. And as we speak, Curious Canuck is telling me he might skip out on us for a wedding. The bastard.
scott evil
02-27-2004, 06:04 PM
::sigh::
Eonwe
02-27-2004, 06:05 PM
Yes, in fact, Curious Canuck has asked me to come in and say that he is a stink-face who can't make the fest because of some silly friend, and something about a wedding, and lots of maple, and maybe something else too.
(psssst, did I get it right, CC?)
CuriousCanuck
02-27-2004, 06:09 PM
I am going to try and make the Friday night dinner though. I'll just have to leave early on Saturday.
CuriousCanuck
02-27-2004, 06:13 PM
Oh, and eonwe: you suck.
Everyone had better entice me to come on the Friday now. I'm offended!
Eonwe
02-27-2004, 06:16 PM
*sigh*
Ok, something about an apology, and some groveling, and no more name calling, and maybe some pork product, and that's it.
(pssssst, how's that, Stink-Face?)
CuriousCanuck
02-27-2004, 06:20 PM
Friday? right out now.
*sniffle*
Eonwe
02-27-2004, 06:25 PM
Ok, now everyone else is gonna blame me.
So, i definiTely appologIze for Not maKing a straightForward Appology, and for Calling you namEs in general.
Will you ever forgive me?
scott evil
02-28-2004, 12:49 PM
Eonwe and CuriousCanuck's hijinks aside, detop, perhaps you should call L'Hermine and St-Hub to scale back the number on the reservations.
scott evil
02-28-2004, 12:54 PM
In any case, here's who I think will be attending the sugaring off on Saturday, give or take a few:
detop (Grand Marshall of Sugardope and Doperéal)
scott evil (Sugardope Queen 2004)
Eonwe
Upside_Down_Amber
kung fu lola
JeffB
clayton_e
Duke
matt_mcl
Daerlyn
Maf (detop's loyal friend-with-minivan)
CuriousCanuck (but who can say, really?)
LaurAnge
That's like 12 to 15. Let's rustle up some more people! :)
Mnementh
02-28-2004, 02:07 PM
Well hellllooooo, what have we here..
Did I miss this last year? Because skipping it twice in a row would be unforgivable.
scott evil

I'm sure your presence would be more than welcomed, Mnementh! :)

Hamish might be coming to the cabane too.
JeffB

He bribed the jury :D
BTW, Daerlyn had mentioned the possibility of somebody coming with her. Any news on that ? And is it official that jeremy evil will not attend our festivities ? Good news about Hamish. And LaurAnge, will N & I Scott attend this year ?

I sucked off the jury. But I didn't need to; I would have won anyway because I'm prettier than matt.

He will not be attending, sorry.

...I'm prettier than matt..
'Course you are, my darling. You also have a fifteen inch cock, have earned several bazillion dollars starring in your autobiographical musical "STUD!" both on Broadway and in the movie, earning worldwide acclaim with your Oscar acceptance speech that managed to bring about World peace and understanding, ending famines and preventing floods/earthquakes/etc. Ralph Lauren's finally come to his senses and hired you as his in-house model and muse, and you've become such a queer icon that you have your own statue in Golden Gate park, where hot young twinks kiss your big golden phallus in order to be lucky in love. Finding the cure for Cancer on your Caribbean estate was just a nice little spot of luck, as was the resulting Nobel Peace prize. 'Course you're prettier than Matt, and all of the rest of it.
*pets you on the head* Now, it's time for your nap, lovie. Did you take your meds, yet?

Mnementh
03-02-2004, 12:39 PM
Oh, and hey; I should've mentioned this before, but I'm somewhat dense like that. If any Toronto-area Dopers are sitting on the fence because of transportation issues, I can offer a cheerful, if somewhat cramped, ride.
And I need to ask; any recommendations on where to stay? Is something being organised, or can anyone recommend someplace near to the festivities?
Daerlyn
03-02-2004, 05:40 PM
BTW, Daerlyn had mentioned the possibility of somebody coming with her. Any news on that ?
Yup. My SO is a confirmed for cabane a sucre on Saturday.
scott evil
03-02-2004, 09:01 PM
Transportation stuff. I assume Eonwe will be going right to the cabane, and CC has bailed. JeffB and detop's friend Maf have large vehicles, and if Mnementh doesn't have a load of TorDopers, there's more space.
Perhaps we should go to the flowchart for this.
CuriousCanuck
03-02-2004, 09:24 PM
I am going Friday night. Don't get mad at me for bailing for a wedding. If you get upset then I'll have nowhere to stay that night!
scott evil
03-02-2004, 10:12 PM
How could I ever be mad at you, o loyal writing-partner-guy?
I'm just concerned about transportation from the city to the cabane. Everything would be so much easier if Eonwe would come into town Saturday morning...
Mnementh
03-02-2004, 10:51 PM
Well no TorDopers've chimed in yet. If it's just me, I can fit three others with quasi-reasonable comfort, and up to four if you're small, don't mind behaving like sardines, and have no trouble with seatbelt laws.
Also, I still have no idea where I'll stay. Anyone, anything?
Eonwe

How far was the cabane from Montreal? And what time are we meeting there? I could definitely come into the city and bring people in and out, as long as it wasn't too too far.

Unfortunately, New & Improved Scott is working on Saturday, and can't come up with us. I assume he'll be coming to the Friday night dinner, though.

It is about an hour out of Montreal and I figure we should meet and leave at around 1 PM, if we want to be there for 2h-2h30.
scott evil
03-03-2004, 04:56 AM
This would make things a lot easier, Eonwe. You can hang out here at the Pad of Evil® for a bit if you want. I'll play you the finished demos from TRASH!. :)
Last year we met up at the hotel where JeffB was staying and headed to the cabane from there. We could always do that again. JeffB, you must divulge your plans! ;)
scott evil
03-03-2004, 05:01 AM
Who's in for the Saturday night dinner, then? It's going to be at a place that serves lighter fare, still TBD. And late - probably around 8:30 - 9:00, since we'll be gorging ourselves at the cabane until at least 3:30 or so.
And this year, let's not be afraid to ask for seconds.
Eonwe
03-03-2004, 06:28 AM
LaurAnge, I swear, that guy is just trying to avoid me!!!! ;)
Scott, let's count on that then... I'll head up to Montreal sometime Saturday AM, in which case I can squeeze four people into my car (though after we eat I may not be able to fit everyone back in for the return trip!).
Also, when you said, "JeffB, you must divulge your plans!" I read it as, "JeffB, you must divulge your pants!"
Much funnier, IMO.
JeffB
03-03-2004, 08:28 AM
My pants will remain undivulged until Sugardope.
My plans, on the other hand, are finally coming together. I will be driving up Friday, but I'm not sure if I'll make it in time for the Friday activities or not. I'm staying at the Hyatt (those points finally pay off!), which is on Jeanne-Mance at Ste-Catherine.
As far as Saturday goes, I get fit three other people easily, or four a little tighter. At some point, I'll need to hop on down to Plattsburgh to pick up clayton_e. I can either head down in the morning to get Clay and meet everyone back in Montreal around 1:00, or if there's someone who knows how to get to the cabane, a group of us could go pick up Clay and head directly there. That might be too complicated though.
I'm in for the Saturday night and Sunday activities as well.
Eonwe
03-03-2004, 11:06 AM
JeffB, you'll not want to go back to Montreal between picking up clay and going to the cabane. The cabane is closer to Plattsburgh than it is to Montreal.
scott evil
03-03-2004, 11:27 AM
JeffB, clay can't come up with you Friday? Why doesn't Eonwe pick him up on his way Saturday morning? (That's assuming Eonwe doesn't bail and does indeed come into town.)
Otherwise it just seems so complicated. But hey... I'm not among those with vehicles.
Daerlyn
03-03-2004, 07:09 PM
Guillaume and I have space for two other people from or leaving from Montreal.
Helen's Eidolon
03-04-2004, 08:35 AM
Well. As many of you may know, Daerlyn's guy and my guy work at the same place. For various and sundry reasons, among them the fact that Guillaume is off to come up with us, New & Improved Scott is now working from 3:30 pm - midnight Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sigh. The elusive Scott will not be attending anything.
Daerlyn
03-04-2004, 09:53 AM
It's not entirely his fault. Guillaume has been stuck with opening on Sunday, which he hates and despises.
But anyways.

03-04-2004, 09:59 AM
My last day of classes before spring break is that Friday, so I should be fine for going up Friday night, if that fits Jeff's schedule.

As for Lola and I our schedules are a little odd. So here is the gist of it:
*Friday: Both Lola and I are there (ITS HER BIRTHDAY!!!) But for afterhours fun I will not be there because I work at 7am
*Saturday: Morning - maybe just Lola
Evening - possible just me
*Sunday - daytime - just Lola
evening - both of us
Looking forward to seeing you all.

As soon as Saturday dinner is finalized, I'll post info here, and detop can put together an official itinerary. I'm thinking we should do it later, as in 9 PM. Last year I think our Saturday dinner reservations were at 8 PM and by the time we got back from the cabane it was a bit tight.
Gourmet pizza places can be snotty wrt reservations. If that's the case, does anyone have any objections to returning to either Reuben's (Doperéal 2003) or Moe's Deli & Bar (Doperéal 2002)? Both places were very accomodating, and have varied menus with lots of lighter fare (e.g. matt's towering salad). Also very reasonable in terms of cost.
Stay tuned.

detop and I are consulting to finalize Saturday dinner plans. Then we'll post the full itinerary, but most of it is in the OP.
Saturday, I propose we do what we did last year, which is to meet outside JeffB's hotel with cars. He's staying at the Hyatt corner Jeanne-Mance and Ste-Catherine, which is near metro Place-des-Arts. I suggest we start assembling around 12:45 so that we can leave the city by 1:15 at the latest.
Don't eat breakfast. And this year, we're not going to be shy about asking for seconds. More bacon. More potatoes. More... everything.

:D :D  I'm coming ! I'm coming!!!
I even called my pseudo-sister... er, I shall call her "Techicolour_Yawn", so I have a polace to stay! I've missed previous Dopereals because -- dammit! -- every time I plan ahead to go to Montreal it falls through. This time I totally resisted the urge to say "I'm going", and lo... I can go! I can go!!!
Uh... I don't know if this messes anything up, but a) I can go! I can go! and b) my pseudo-sister (not of any real biological relation, but Mom_Crayons and I unofficially adopted Technicolour_Yawn) is interested in attending Saturday night fiestivities also.

Alas, I will not be able to make it to this one... Sunspace_Dad is moving at the end of the month, and preparations are taking up my weekends. Howver, in the spring or summer, I will be more free.
I really do want to visit Montréal and its Dopers, honest!
scott evil
03-11-2004, 05:11 AM
Eats_Crayons, I'm thrilled. It's a Sugardope miracle. I'm a little varklempt.
JeffB & clayton_e: please email me ASAP about arrival times, and if the directions to my place I gave were clear. I'd also like to hear from Eonwe - you can come by the Pad of Evil® or head right for the hotel meeting place.
Reposting the itinerary so far, since I haven't done anything else to help except post here like a yakking yenta. ;)
Friday, March 12: Dinner at St-Hub Resto Bar, 1019 Ste-Catherine East (corner Amherst - metro Berri-UQAM). Reservations @ 8:15 under the name Cecil Adams. After this we'll most likely head to Club Date (1218 Ste-Catherine East, metro Beaudry) for cheezy karaoke. And then, who knows. The possibilities are endless.
Saturday, March 13 - sugaring off: Meet outside JeffB's hotel, the Hyatt on the corner of Ste-Catherine and Jeanne-Mance (metro Place-des-Arts) around 12:30. Around 1 PM we'll get in cars and head to cabane à sucre l'Hermine (http://english.montrealplus.ca/portal/profile.do?profileID=451987) from there. Reservation @ 2:30 under name Cecil Adams. We had some pretty good directions last year, if we can dig those up.
Don't eat breakfast. We will not be shy to ask for seconds. Now that we've been there once before and know the score, we are going to take over that place and make other parties fear us. Are we not Dopers?
detop, can you post the menu and the price? IIRC last year it was $18 per person including the (giggle) "sleigh ride." They also have interesting home brewed maple beers, for those of you that enjoy an early afternoon drinkie-poo. (I know I used to.) There is a DJ, but please do not request the song "YMCA". Thank you.
Saturday, March 13 - dinner: Pizzédélic in Old Montreal, 39 Notre-Dame west. (Metro Place-d'Armes, take St-Urbain exit, turn right and walk along St-Urbain past St-Antoine. Continue along St-Urbain, which becomes Place-d'Armes, then go left on Notre-Dame. Map of area here (http://www.stm.info/English/metro/images/c13.gif). In any case, it's on Notre-Dame just east of St-Laurent.) Reservations @ 9 PM under name Cecil Adams. Pizzédélic serves square, so-called "gourmet" pizzas and other light fare.
After dinner, we'll go carousing or whatever.
Sunday, March 14: St. Patrick's Day Parade. Green beer, green puke. Green everything. Get green stuff at any one of many Dollarama locations. detop can post a meeting time & place. There will be food at some point.
Out-of-town people: take the metro everywhere for city activities. Strip of six tickets is $11. Three-day tourist pass is $16.00. The tourist passes are generally only sold in downtown metro stations, although surly ticket takers will sometimes deny their existence.

I'll be heading towards Montreal right after work, which will probably bring me in to town way too late for Dope festivities, so my doping will have to start on Saturday.
That's cool though, it'll give me late Firday night to catch up with Technicolor_Yawn -- we haven't seen each other in about three years!

I think I'm going to say right now that I will not be attending any Sunday activities. As it is, I'll be running off to work on my paper at any given opportunity. I can't wait to see everyone! Wow, tomorrow!
P.S., Nate, you staying here?

I'm probably out for the Sunday activities. Parades really aren't my thing *, especially when just about everyone in attendance is drunk. (No offense.)
Eonwe: come Friday.
Small boo-boo in the itinerary I posted: Pizzédélic is on Notre-Dame just west of St-Laurent. :smack:
I will quite possibly be arriving a bit late at St-Hub on Friday, depending on when clayton_e arrives at the Pad of Evil®. Save us seats. I don't know if my other half will be coming or if he's made plans. (He's a real social butterfly, believe it or not.)
Eats_Crayons: you should get LaurAnge's cell phone number in case you want to join us Friday after all. We might get bored of Club Date and move the festivities elsewhere. But in any case, can't wait to see you Saturday. I'll email you my home phone # if you need better directions to the hotel where we're meeting up.

It looks like clayton_e and I should be hitting Montreal around 7:00 if everything works according to plan. That should allow Scott to make it on time, I think. (Tell Jeremy he needs to show up.) I'll make dinner, but after working all day and driving, I'm probably not going to last too late.
I'm probably out for the Sunday activities. Parades really aren't my thing *, especially when just about everyone in attendance is drunk. (No offense.)I'm with Scott on the parade thing, but if people are planning to meet at some point for breakfast/lunch, I'm probably up for it. So, we gathered at St-Hubert earlier this evening (and although a few didn't show up, you know who you are, don't make me name names ;) ) the supper proceeded amicably without a hitch and with much enjoyement by all, it might be the Quebec equivalent of McDonalds, but the food is much better (and they serve alcoholic beverages). Then we proceeded to go to Club Date for more libations.
There there was a slight problem. The place was packed ! So much so that although we went in about 3 hrs ago, it was only in the last half hour or so that the members of our group that signed up to sing (Daerlyn, scott evil and matt_mcl) were able to perform. In the meantime we had to suffer (and enjoy in some cases) the Karaoke performances of the rest of the audience. Daerlyn issued a challenge to scott evil for the title of Karaoke queen. The verdict was a draw. Victory for Daerlyn for voice, victory for scott evil for stage presence. A rematch is supposed to take place at a future Dopefest.

Change of plans for Sunday. Instead of going to the parade, we will have breakfast/brunch at noon at Chez Cora (1017 Ste-Catherine East), followed by a guided visit by matt_mcl of the Notre-Dame basilica.
Now for a report of today's activities :
We gathered around 12 : 30 at JeffB's hotel where in addition to last night's crew, we were joined by Daerlyn's boyfriend, jeremy evil and the lovely Eats_Crayons, fresh from the wilds ot Toronto :D. After deciding who went with whom, our convoy started towards the cabane à sucre. An hour later we arrived and after a few minutes wait we were served (we had time to go say hello to the goats and the alpagas. Sorry to say, they seemed to have a different breed of goats this year, a miniature one, cutes as buttons, so they didn't remembered us [sorry CC]). Then the food started to arrive, and plenty of it ! After demolishing several servings (the eggs cooked in syrup seemed to have been a hit), we went for the sleighride to help digestion. Unfortunately, it was quite windy, hence cold, and it was not as enjoyable as last year. I guess you can't win them, all. After that, back in the cars for the trip back to Montréal.
Now, this evening, after a 2 hour siesta, we recongregated at around 9 PM at Pizzedelic in old Montréal for some more food. After an enjoyable meal, we split up, some of us going to see a drag show, some of us going back home for a well deserved rest (this Dopefest, I really feel my age and I have trouble keeping up with the young'uns :( ).
And so this conclude part two of Sugardope II.
Addenda to Eonwe : for not warning us in time of your absence, at the next Mtl Dopefest, you have to sing a duet with scott evil :p .

Both Lola and I wish we could have made it today. As far as I know she will be joining you tomorrow but alas I have to slave away feeding all those lovely drunk people who crave hamburgers after a few hundred beers. (Sorry I know I'm bitter) Anyway, if there are any plans for after 5 o'clock I am sure to be there, and if not well until next year.
I just had to add that both Lola and myself had a wonderful time Friday night. I wish we could have stayed. Lola said that this was her best birthday, which is very much because of all of you. Thank you all so much.
Hope to see you all tomorrow.

Anyhoo, are you children ready for part III of SugarDope II ? If you're not I don't care, here it comes anyway :D
So, Sunday morning, Montreal City. We had agreed on the previous evening to gather at Chez Cora (a breakfast restaurant) for noon. After two days of carousing heartily, the energy level was a bit low, so instead of arriving in more-or-less organized groups, we dribbled in the restaurant (one here, one there, another a little bit later, etc.). To make it short, here is the order of arrivals :
kung fu lola,
Mnementh, detop
JeffB
followed a little bit later by Daerlyn
then matt_mcl, clayton_e and wolfstu.
MIAs : scott evil, Eats_Crayons.
So after settling down we ordered the food (Hmmm, I sense a theme here, maybe next year's motto should be "It's all about the food !") and proceeded to stuff our face again. Portions were large, good and varied. After leaving enough time for the food to settle down, we waddled to Old Montreal to visit the Notre-Dame basilica. That was needed. Nothing like a little exercise after a big meal. We unexpectedly managed to arrive just as an English tour of the church was about to start, so we decided to take advantage of it. After the tour, kung fu lola decided to go to the gift shop to see if they had any chocolate popesTM. Unfortunately, they were all out. So, since it was getting late in the day, the group broke up and we headed each one of us our own way.
THE END

Alas, as much as Doping would have been fun, I did need to spend some time with my pseudo-sister, Technicolor_Yawn. We haven't seen each other in a couple of years and we also had to get some family papers order (really, since we can't adopt her officially into our family, we had to do "power of attorney" and all that jazz.)
So it was a thrilling day discussing legal stuff.
Anyone else have pictures of SugarDope yet?
