Pop culture 101--Jessica Simpson

Okay, I realize this is very nearly a dumb question. (However, none of my friends knew the answer, obviously we are not attuned to pop culture.) I know that Jessica Simpson is famous and I know what she looks like. However, I do not know why she is famous. Because she's been on TV? A lot? Other than smiling and looking good, what does she do?

I actually leafed through a bunch of magazines like US and yes, I saw her picture. A lot. It just brought up more questions. (Like: people are actually marrying other people they meet on reality shows? It's not like My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancee--they are getting legally hitched, to someone they picked out of a group of . . . average joes, for instance? No, don't answer this, I probably don't wanna hear it. Just tell me why JS is famous.)

Christina, Britney, Jessica, and Mandy are all 23 or younger. Shakira isn't that young when you're comparing her to the other girls.
