View Full Version : SSM opponents threaten SF mayor's life
SF mayor Gavin Newsom (http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/03/030204newsomThreat.htm) is under 24-hour police protection following the receipt of a number of "credible" death threats made after he ordered the issuing of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
San Francisco of course had a previous mayor, George Moscone, and supervisor, openly gay Harvey Milk, cut down by assassin's bullets, and anti-gay sentiment played a role in their deaths.
I wonder if George W Bush and the rest of the "compassionate conservatives" who've called for "respectful" debate on this issue will condemn these threats.

I'd be curious to know how many of those death threats have Bible verses attached.

Absolutely appalling. The very idea that this sort of action should be punishable by anything more stringent than a court order to stop is just appalling.

Repugnant, but unfortunately not too surprising.
I wonder, can any of the new terrorism laws be used against these yokels? Are death threats considered "terrorism"?

If they're not, I don't know what is...
Not that it would surprise me in the least if some loophole is found that excludes the death threats against Newsom.
Interesting, how Newsom's actions have quickly brought the hatred and bigotry against gays into sharp relief (well, even sharper than previously). Even Bush isn't waffling about it anymore.

No, no, no, no, no.
You just don't GET it, do you?
When non-American, swarthy-skinned people commit acts of violence against those who do not believe as they do, for religious reasons, this is called "terrorism," and should be dealt with as harshly as possible.
When "Real Americans" commit acts of violence against anyone for religious reasons (saving the unborn, for example) or cultural reasons (preserving the sacred institution of marriage), then this is a legitimate act of protest, and should be treated as such.
Y'dig?

It wouldn't matter if every conservative in the country denounced the threats, you'll still piss and moan about it. Yes, you nasty cow, I would indeed "piss and moan" about death threats even if GWB himself denounced them. I would congratulate him for doing so but the death threats would still warrant a bit of a "piss and moan."
My question to you, you icky twat, is why you aren't? Do you think that threatening to kill people who do things you don't like is an acceptable mode of conduct?

It wouldn't matter if every conservative in the country denounced the threats, you'll still piss and moan about it.
Right, here's a scenario for you:
Let's imagine Christians are persecuted, legally targeted, denigrated, castigated and made to feel unwelcome by more than a few in this country and many others. They aren't allowed to worship in private or in public, crosses are illegal, etc.
Now let's say the city planner for Jackson, Mississippi discovered that there was nothing explicitly permitting church services in that county and began to organize one (off the clock) ... even began plans for a small chapel in a deserted lot nobody had payed attention to in decades.
And let's imagine that this same city planner got death threats for his "unnatural" plans, for his "immoral religious practices", etc.
You going to tell us that you wouldn't be raising unholy hell if every christian's right to worship privately were abbrogated in the slightest (btw, removing prayer from a public forum such as public school doesn't cut it)? Beyond that, a DEATH THREAT for daring to organize any sort of religious worship?
Get off your high horse, lady. Failing that, take your head out of the horse's ass.

Jeff Lodoen is probably right. Barry Goldwater was a much more rational and sensible man than the vast majority of wackos who call themselves Republicans today. He was really a "live and let live" kind of guy on social issues.

They had bloody well better, ESPECIALLY if the threats came from those who have pledged their support to those same politicians.

That reminds me of when the pro-life people condemned the abortion clinic bombers. They realised that silence on this issue was the same as assent, so they came out and condemned the bombings in no uncertain terms.

Let's get one of them out of the way, at least.
I'm conservative. I support civil unions, but oppose same-sex marriages.
I condemn in the strongest possible terms any use of violence in this nationwide debate. For that matter, I oppose any use of inflammatory or insulting rhetoric or language in debating this important social issue.
If you want me to tie a Bible verse to this, I can. It's from Paul's first letter to the Corinthians: (13: 1-2)
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

I think a more comparable argument might be: Imagine some protesters threatened G. W. Bush's life and most liberals apologized for it. A lot of conservatives would still be all over liberals like the hounds of hell. I suspect they might use an argument of how those liberals are only saying that, but really wouldn't mind.
Plus, some Christians, especially those of Snoopyfan's ilk (judging by previous posts), claim persecution anyway.
