Singles Dopefest for Memorial Day Weekend

The Valentines Card Exchange was so much fun, let's take the idea a little farther.

One point of the exchange was to put single Dopers in contact with other single Dopers. I'd like to meet several of these people in person, and I'm sure other people also have their list of whom they'd love to meet. (Or meet to love?) Plus there's many people who didn't take part in the exchange, for their own reasons.

So my idea is: Let's hold a Dopefest for us singles, and get together for a whole weekend! We'll start with some mixers (last Friday I was at a happy hour with the most interesting icebreaker), and proceed from there. I'm picturing something vaguely akin to "Average Joe & Jody," with enough contestants to fill both sides of the game. This means that there's a good chance we could all head home winners!

Memorial Day is far enough away to give us time to plan, and it's a three day weekend to boot.

So who's interested? Where do we want to meet? What planned activities do we want to do there? Who wants to help me run this show?

I might just be crazy enough, but I have to make a couple of other trips over the next 3-4 months, so I couldn’t blow a lot of cash on it. But if it were somewhere not too terribly far, such that I could drive, and/or somewhere where I have friends to crash with, I might consider it. (I’m in Chicago, but have friends to crash with in a few places, notably NY, San Francisco, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, and a couple of other places which are slipping my mind right now.)

I'm only marginally interested, knowing that this dopefest will end up taking place 2,000 miles from me... (And also knowing I probably wouldn't show up even if it were an hour away. 'Cause it's hard to get me to leave my house. Unless one of you come over and physically drag me out!) Let's just say I think that's a great idea, but I won't participate.

I just wanted to point out that I deeply resent it when people try to plan things to tack on to a holiday weekend. Just because I'm single doesn't mean I have no plans. I have a standing trip to the beach with some friends (all married) -- and we do this every year on Memorial Day.

Twice now I've been invited to weddings that occurred over a holiday weekend. I think it's rude, since many people make holiday plans long in advance.

For this, I recommend an off-weekend, and in some centrally-located place. You might do better to try to organize several in different regions around the country. I guess some dopers will actually pay for a plane ticket to meet other dopers. Me, I can't fathom that. (But of course, I don't post a lot and therefore, have made very few friends on these boards. Come to think of it, none really. I wonder if I'm really that uninteresting...)

I couldn't even afford postage for the last idea, so a plane ticket is totally out of the question.
