View Full Version : What person of the sex you do NOT fancy do you find attractive?

*sweeping generalisation alert*

I was musing about how it appears to me that a lot of guys do seem to go for the Pamela Anderson type, but how there's rarely a woman who wants to look like that. So I was wondering if some of the straight people care to list some of the people they would like to look like or whose looks they admire who are of the same sex as they are. Gay people can list people of the opposite sex.

There are going to be lots of actors, musicians etc. listed, so maybe this belongs to Cafe Society (mods feel free to move it there if that fits better), but I'm more interested in what sort of looks are deemed attactive when the whole "sex" thing is left out of the equation (up to a point as IMO no one is 100% straight of gay) and how different the list would be from a normal list of heartthrobs than a discussion about the attractiveness of certain actors, musicians as such.

I'll start myself.

I'm straight and female.

Women I find beautiful are:
- Juliette Binoche
- Lara Flynn Boyle
- Bjork
- Lena Olin

I gotta admit I find Kevin Spacey very attractive. I don't exactly know what it is, though.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, on the other hand, turns me right off.

I think Adrian Brody is a very attractive man. If I had to have a homosexual experience, he'd be at the top of my list.

I find Kate Winslet incredibly attractive. I think I'd like to be her when I grow up.

Mira Sorvino is beautiful as well. Hmm.. Angelina is lovely but I don't think I'd want to look like her.

Yeah, I definitely want to be Kate Winslet.

Or the red head from That 70's Show.

Attracted to isn't the right word, but these are the men I'd choose to look like if I had the choice - Pierce Brosnan or Harrison Ford, maybe Patrick Stewart....

I'd have to say Catherine Zeta-Jones or Gwen Stefani. Completely different I know, but I think they both have that old Hollywood-style glam going on and I love it.

Given the first and last names on your list, I'm guessing you really enjoyed the movie "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", which features both of those actresses nude. One of my favorite movies, by the way, and two of my favorite women.

Straight male here: I'll second Harrison Ford and Pierce Brosnan and add Sean Connery. I like their 'rugged good looks', though perhaps Brosnan is a little too 'pretty'. I think it would be nice to have those features and they are admirable, if not quite attractive to me.

I hereby nominate Sean Connery as the Man I Hope To Resemble When I Am His Age.

I guess Tom Cruise would be the one I wish I could have looked like in high school and college; it strikes me that a guy who looked like that would have to beat them off with a stick, as the saying goes.

Yes, you got me there. :)

But seriously. Maybe "attractive" was putting it absolutely the wrong way. I'm not really looking for the people straights have a gay fantasy crush on or vice versa. Just what you think is a good looking man/woman from an "objective" aesthetic perspective, rather than a "I want to smooch this person" kind of perspective.

I think my History teacher, Mr. Smith, is physically attractive. I also think that Albert Speer is attractive

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Salma Hayek. They both have some serious curves in a stick-thin Hollywood. I would love to look like either of them, but especially Salma. I think I indentify with her because we have somewhat similar body shapes (though she is much more curvey and attractive!). Sadly, my husband considers her "fat." :(

I've always enjoyed the Pam and Carmen ty pes. If their boob jobs weren't so tight they would both look better. Both have gorgeous faces, and other than the boob jobs, gorgeous bodies. So, I guess Playboy bunny is my ultimate look.

For the au naturel women, I like Jlo and Salma.

'Oh, this one's easy,' thought this straight female, as I opened the thread. 'Clearly the answer is Jennifer Connolly.'

But thanks to the OP for reminding me of Juliette Binoche and *swoon* Bjork. Also Joni Mitchell but that may be more because I want to sing and play guitar like her, rather than just look like her.

And my friend Michelle. She's hot.

Straight male here.Liam Neeson has always struck me as a strikingly beautiful human being (seen/met him in real life several times, and he's just as striking in real life). Also, James Spader comes to mind ... I remain convinced BTW that at the end of Beauty and the Beast, when the Beast morphs back into the handsome prince, that he effectively just turns into an animated version of Spader. (Note this is just my theory, Spader isn't credited or anything).

I'd prefer to be like Bogart, Eastwood, Sam Elliot, or Robert Michum. Not pretty boys, and have that really cool 'don't fuck with me I'm in control here" kind of look and aura. Unfortunately I can't think of any young ones cause Hollywood has gone 100% percent pretty boy(Brad Pit, Dicaprio) or cartoonish twit tough guy(like Vin Diesel)

I'd like to look like Gillian Anderson, circa X-Files season 4. Her nose is exquisite, and with red hair she looks like she could have stepped out of a John Singer Sargent painting. I feel so sad when I see her now, blonde and skinny and boring.

Frances Dee, who passed away recently, was also lovely (http://members.tripod.com/~JTarple/fever/fdstart.html).

I wish I knew why I was so frickin' attracted to Keira Knightley. I lust after her, but in a non-sexual way. When I'm watching her movies, I wait for her to come onscreen just to stare at her face, the way I do when I see a hot guy. She has this strange power over me, even if I have no desire to have sex with her.

Angelina Jolie's pretty damn hot too. Those frightening, bizarre, enormous lips - I dunno why I like 'em.

As a straight male, I'd have to say Gerard Depardieu. He rules.

Also, for those that mentioned Audrey Hepburn - if I was a straight female or a gay male having a hypothetical discussion about who I would find attractive if I had a different sexual orientation, she'd totally be on my list.

The only woman I've ever really had a big crush on is Missy Elliott. It's unlike me to ever fantasize about women but for some reason she has always been really sexy to me. I'm not sure what it is about her. I guess it's that she's smart and talented and pretty but not stuck up and she is her own person. I'm not really sure what it is about her.

I have nonsexual crushes on other females like Tina Fey and Naomi Watts but I don't think that really counts.

Straight male here.

I think Chris Isaak is one of the best-looking, coolest, and...OK, sexiest men around. He's a tremendous talent as a singer and musician, and an extremely charismatic actor. I don't knwo if he's married or not, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if women throw themselves at him like he was a young Elvis.

Also Brad Pitt (especially as Tyler Durden as he first appeared in Fight Club), Bruce Campbell (who has great classic leading-man looks), Johnny Depp, Vince Vaughn, and John Cusack. All super-cool, excellent actors who are handsome as hell. I guess you can add George Clooney to my list, moreso for his "lovable rogue" persona than his looks.

And Bono, from his black leather and "Fly goggles" phase (the Achtung Baby/Zoo TV era).

But first off. How could I forget Penelope Cruz? Gorgeous.

And Big Bad Voodoo Lou Chris Isaak is such a great classy choice IMO. Yes, I would throw myself at him without second thought. *swoon*

Anyway, onto my crackpot theorising and wild generalising. One thing that struck me for the straight women is that we seem to overwhelmingly like the dark haired women more than the blondes who might be considered the traditionally attractive ones, or are at least peddled as such by the media. Also it seems women seem to go more for looks with classy or quirky fashion senses, rather than revealing. And with a few exceptions (Hally Berry ) nobody went for the real "super bodies", i.e. nobody seemed to want to be Naomi Campbell or Claudia Schiffer. Seems to me we want to be seen as sophicated rather than sex bombs.

Tentatively I'd say straight guys seem to go for more "macho" men than women usually go for. Sean Connery, Harrison Ford et all, seem to me the sort of rugged outdoorsy types who can change a tyre blindfolded and could survive three weeks in the wilderness with only a match and a bit of rope. Women do like that type, but then a lot of the really really popular males Mr. Pitt, look like they'd be lost when confronted with some basic DIY or a fishing rod. I suspect the guys who did go for the Pitts and Beckhams to be a bit opportunist or just plain clever for having spotted who got all the groupies.

The gay contigent has not been vocal enough on this one to warrant a crackpot theory. :)

Disclaimer: Of course there are exception to all statements I make. And some of the coolest choices IMO were among them.

So any comments or disgreements on the theorising? Or are you all just screaming at me to stop stating the bloody obvious?

When I was, oh, 24 or so, I saw Terminator II, and Linda Hamilton, all buff for that movie? Oh, yeah. I'm a female, and straight as a freakin' ruler, but I'd go for that! Also, Jodie Foster. Maybe it's because these two have some masculinity about them? (No, not Linda Hamilton in general, just in that role). Also, Julianne Moore (making me wonder if I've just got a thing for women who've played Clarice Starling. . .but, no, I've crushed on Jodie since long before Silence of the Lambs. In fact, the first thing I remember seeing her in was The Courtship of Eddie's Father when she was, like, 9). Well, that sounds bad. . .like I had a crush on a 9-year-old. Well, I didn't. I was also about 9. But I'm only saying I've been aware of her for a long, long time.

Female het.

After a bit of tinking I decided on this list:

Alison Hannigan- I like her lips; she does this pouty thing with them that I can't seem to replicate.
Michelle Branch- She's very beautiful, has a great singing voice, and hair to die for.
Queen Latifah- It's not so much her looks as her attitude; she exudes confidence.

I find it interesting that when I'm trying to spot 'attractive' guys the first thing I go for is their eyes; if I don't like his eyes then he's not worth it. I can't even tell you the eye colors of the women on my list though. Odd.

I like punky girls like Pink and Shirley Manson from Garbage. I wish they'd been more women like them around when I was looking for some strong female role models as a teenager, so I wouldn't have felt so freakish with my tomboy attitude and big muscles (props to Madonna also on this point, and ageing very well)

Also, Kathrine Hepburn, just for being so darn cool, self-possessed and elegant.

Angelina Jolie! Angelina Jolie! Angelina Jolie! It's a good thing that she and Billy Bob Thornton adopted a child--a biological child of theirs would be so hot that he could have his own solar system. (Or the kid would be remarkably ugly. It could could go either way with those two.)

I also find Catherine Zeta-Jones incredibly beautiful. I remember when she was first becoming really famous and was on a lot of magazine covers--I'd just stand in the supermarket staring at her face on the magazine rack. Then, I read a discussion of her at another message board, where the people there seemed to think she wasn't anything special. That really surprised me. This thread makes me feel better, though!

I also find Soledad O'Brien (morning anchor at CNN) very attractive. I love her combination of looks and personality--and she's a great newsperson too.

Others that people have mentioned in this thread that I think are very attractive: Halle Berry, Salma Hayek, Tina Fey, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott. I guess I like dark haired dark-eyed women. Not surprising--I have a strong preference for men with that coloring.

either Sean Penn or Benicio Del Torro. Do women find either of these guys attractive?

Benicio Del Toro: Holy shit yes!

Sean Penn: I don't find him attractive in the least.

I thought Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly in Bound were extremely hot.

Looks? Probably Colin Farrell (probably because I look like him but never quite as good, I always thought I could look better if I just got spikes that looked like his) and Brad Pitt from Fight Club.
Personality? Without a question George Clooney and Brad Pitt in Ocean's Eleven, it's without a doubt the personality I strive for, especially Clooney's.

Straight male.

Johnny Depp for sure. Viggo Mortensen when he's got the Aragorn wig; I think he loses it a bit with shorter hair. Redford before he got left out in the rain. And McCartney. He's getting a bit jowly and turkey-necked, but somehow he's even more interesting looking than when he was young.

Sean Bean. Particularly as he looked in the "Sharpe" series.

Yup, I think so. I'd mortgage my non-essential internal organs to be as hot as he.

Het female checking in.

I have always had that thing for Catherine Deneuve. And another thing for Susan Sarandon. Needless to say, I enjoyed The Hunger a great deal!

Man, I gotta get my SO over here and rent that one!

I'd have to go with Keira K and Scarlett J. (If I just use initials I don't have it spell it ;) .
I especially love Keira's voice.

Oh, straight female.

Still straight, still female.

I forgot to mention not overly well known actress Azura Skye. She played Cassie who quite correctly foresaw her own demise and some other stuff as well in Buffy. I was reminded of her because she had a part in The Handler the other week. She has so much charisma and seems such a cool person. A bit like an indie Drew Barrymore.

Straight male here.

Just for the record, I think Pamela Anderson is the most repulsive-looking female celebrity out there. Yuk. I hate that look. She looked wonderful when she made her first appearances in Playboy - she looked natural and unenhanced. Now - gag.

What male celeb would I like to look like? Michael Dorn (Worf on Star Trek: TNG). I'm not the right race, but so what. He's an attractive man.

And based on the comments I've heard from many of my female acquaintances, I've decided that looking like Orlando Bloom as Legolas would be a really good thing.

Straight female here.

Madge Sinclair was a beautiful woman. Those cheekbones and voice, and the way she carried herself. Damn, I hate leukemia.

Catherine Zeta-Jones. It's the eyes and the hair.

My paternal grandmother. I saw a portrait of her when she was eighteen or so. High cheekbones(I have a thing about them), dark eyes, hair swept up in a pompador, she looked a little like Sophia Loren.

Ewan MacGregor - with the neatly trimmed beard (and the robes) as seen in Episode 2, but with his own voice, as in A Life Less Ordinary. I have mentioned this before.

I've also mentioned before that I'd want to look like Ewan McGregor. I think Jude Law is slightly better looking, and I personally find Jonathan Rhys-Meyers more attractive, but I'd still prefer to resemble Ewan.

Straight female here.

I haven't seen her recently, but I really love to look at Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Abyss. That last scene in RH:PoT, where she's wearing the garland of flowers and stuff on her head -- she takes my breath away.

I like Linda Hamilton too. And Kathy Ireland.

Straight female, who is incredibly bad at remembering celeb names.

I think the girl who plays Piper on Charmed is very beautiful. Holly Something??

Also Sharon Stone, more so now that's she's older--less "sexy" and more "classicly beautiful", which is also sexy.

Jennifer Aniston--depending on what they're doing with her hair.

and (another name-blank), whoever played the lead on The Point of No Return. (Her name is on the tips of my fingers. . . )

Straight Female . . . .

I am obsessed with Gwynth Paltrow's life. It might stem from my Coldplay addiction but I always buy the magazines she appears in and I would love to switch places with her. She seems so classy and comfortably beautiful.

Also Cameron Diaz. She seems so fun and carefree and real. Her smile is breathtaking and she's got style.

If anyone has seen the movie Splendor, I would like to be that girl too. She was on 90210 and another Greg Araki movie but I can't remember her name. She is so damn cute!

And Kirsten Dunst- again with the natural beauty and carefree attitude. And I like her body the most out of all of them.
