View Full Version : Dopers whose genders you assumed incorrectly

Have any of you ever incorrectly assumed the gender of a doper for some reason? Or for no reason at all? C'mon, fess up? And who was it?
For me (and there's a good chance that I'm still wrong about one or more of these folks... if so, please correct me):
Shodan, SnoopyFan, and Gaudere are all female. I assumed they were male
Mangetout is male. I assumed he was female. (Ilsa Lund definitely sounds female, but is crafty enough to mention in his sig that he's male)

I have no idea why this is, but the name Shirley Ujest always struck me as masculine. I know, I know, it's got "Shirley" in it, but for some reason I always pictured a man; possibly because of the "Yes, and don't call me Shirley" jokes from Airplane!.
Anyway, I was surprised to find out Shirley was female.

As for me, fortunately I have a line for such situtations, right from Don Marquis himself. I can always recite:
i am a lady archy always a lady
because for some reason there are people who walk the earth not knowing about a female alley cat character created in 1916 by a poet/columnist who's been dead for over fifty years for a newspaper (The NY Sun) that's been gone for forty. Un-freakin'-believable.
BTW, EddyTeddyFreddy explained once that she got her username from her three cats. Go kittycats!

Mostly because until a thread here (about a year after I began posting) that catogorized people's user names- and hers ended up in the pun catogory- I didn't get the joke. Heck, even with a very feminine username (certainly much more feminine than my legal name) I still get called "he" around here. Why would anyone think that a poster with the name of a female monster from Greek mythology was a man? What man would choose such a name?

I'm female, which comes as a surprise to other posters occasionally. My fault for picking an ambiguous name. Interestingly, I have come to notice that unless the poster has an obvious female name, I tend to picture them as a white male of about my own age. (thirties)

There are message boards with an option to give info on your gender.
That can be useful because some people tend to react a bit "hostile" whenever you can't guess their gender correctly when you reply to their posts.
I was misled by the membername of Ilsa Lund and at first also for EddyTD (until I saw a picture with the horses... So also 3 cats ETD? We have more then one passion in common then).
For the rest I think that I'm guessing right in most cases.

Eddy, Teddy and Freddy (http://community.webshots.com/photo/782975/784355) are indeed male, although the vet has, shall we say, forestalled their love life. The current cat total in the ETF household is eight: five orange tiger males, three black females. Hey, I'm all set for Hallowe'en.
I am female, and plan to continue being female, and single. Although it's true I'm often found hanging out with two handsome guys (http://community.webshots.com/photo/735286/128041607qXSSvk).

Broomstick
03-27-2004, 09:36 AM
Of course, I always thought Muffin was female, as well as thinking Broomstick was male.
I get a lot of people thinking I'm male on message boards and e-mail lists, so if you made the same mistake don't feel bad, you have a lot of company. I think it's the flying hobby - not only do most folks assume "pilot" means male, most pilots are male. About 20:1 male:female in general aviation, about 200:1 in ultraights, which is where I started.
Fortunately for ya'll, I don't get upset about it - most of the time I think it's amusing.
I don't hide my gender, but I don't make a big deal about it unless it's pertinent to the topic under discussion - can't imagine the reactions of some of those readers thinking I'm male then finding some of my >cough< rather graphic posts under threads on mestruation or other very female topics.
Most Neo-Pagans guess female based on my username, but among non-Pagans it seems to be 50/50. And the nickname comes from my religion, not my aviation interests. (I've been accused of riding them, dontchya know...)
Sometimes I guess wrong about a poster's gender, but most of the time I just try to avoid the assumptions.

I did think Broomstick was male at first, but it was easy to shake that impression once I found out the truth. It took forever to get rid of my mental image of Scylla, though. I've always loved that name, and putting it on a male just didn't fit. I thought Siege was male at first, too.

Besides, ninjas have no gender.
:D
I don't think anyone's ever mistaken me for my opposite gender -- not on here, at least. :)
And certainly never in person.

Maybe the mental association with Brandy Chastain (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/siforwomen/issue_three/dear_diary/brandi/), the soccer player.
That must have beenthe reason.
And yes, I'm a girl.

I know I've had to correct people on my gender more than once.
I used to think you were a guy too, but your picture convinced me otherwise. ;)

Look, man, it ain't my fault you aren't. This is the 21st century and there are many and varied ways you could have been a hot chick. Booty shorts, for one... I love those things/

I always assume that I'm talking to an attractive woman. At least until I find out different, unless it's otherwise apparent. I got busted for this awhile back when I said something about Pantellerite being female. <smack>
Hey, that's okay, if I'm wrong then no harm done.
Guess I still got them old dog instincts. ;)
Who me? Sitting in my boxers, scratching my beard, smoking a stogie and sippin tequila. What'dya think?
and Hell no, I'm not your grandma either.
