The Original Cafe Societies

Did the concept of "cafe society" originate in Paris near the turn of the last century? If so, which cafes that still exist were the hotspots for writers, artists and philosophers?

Where do they congregate in Paris now?

I know that this could easily go in GQ, but it just begged to be posted here.

I doubt if you're gonna get much of a response. I've noticed there's very little true "cafe society" related activity here. I wish there was.
