View Full Version : Jewish / Palestinian marriages

Does anyone know of any Jewish/Palestinian married couples living in Israel? How are they perceived by society during such tense times? What legal rights would such a marriage bring to the Palestinian partner? Could either one or both hold high-ranking jobs in the Government or Legal fields? Upon divorce, could either party return to their respective groups, or would they continue to be shunned (if they ever were to begin with)? What rights do the children of such a union hold? Etc, etc, blah, blah, woof, woof.

The only thing I know is that AFAIK, they can't be married in Israel (there's no civil procedure for marriages, hence only religious authorities can marry people, IIRC. Perphaps it could work if the paletinian is a muslim male, since Islam allow men to marry christian or Jewish women. So, perhaps an Imam could marry the couple. I wouldn't know.). So, these people have to marry in a foreign country. I read somewhere that Cyprus is oftten chosen, for some reason (perhaps the nearest country whose law allow foreigners to be married?).

Thanks for that info. No civil marriages in Israel? I was not aware of that. I did know that the there could not be a religious ceremony unless the Palestinian party underwent the conversion process, but always assumed that there would be a civil avenue for such a union.

I'm fairly sure that i read an article within the past few months about a soldier serving in the Israeli army that has Jewish/Palestinian parents. It might have been in the New York Times.
