View Full Version : What's your favorite non-cola softdrink?

Mine is Vernor's golden ginger ale. "Flavor aged for years in wood".

NO relation to Canada Dry or Schwepps ginger ales. This one has flavor. Like some "ginger beer" brands.

It's Detroit's favorite non-cola, appearing in chain fast food places alongside colas.

Now it's brewed in a few states, so I think it's available everywhere in the US and Canada (but it's often thought of as a mixer, where they bury it in with odd coconut syrups, and overprice it to match them)

1. Minute Maid fruit punch soda.
2. IBC Root Beer.
3. REAL Ginger Ale, the kind you can only find in brown bottles. Vernor's, Canada Dry, and the like are swill compared to that stuff.
4. Country Time lemonade, in cans.
5. Spiced Apple Brew (I can't remember who makes it)

Favorites: Stewart's, especially Cherry Vanilla, Orange, Key Lime, and Cream. Their Ginger Ale is a great concept, though not for me (the last thing I want is spicy soda, but I give them a lot of credit for making it).

Adirondack Orange Citrus Frost. Very hard to find -- a dry orange soda.

Diet Rite Tangerine.

7-Up, Squirt, Faygo Orange, and Faygo Redpop. I also think highly of strawberry KoolAid and lemonaide Crystal Lite.

I used to live in Michigan, so I've come across Vernor's ginger ale. I've never been able to stand the stuff.

Coffee, diet Dr. Pepper, and diet ice tea mixed
with diet lemonade. I've been drinking that for
decades; now people actually market it. Great
combo!

Vernor's is great stuff, unfortunately unavailable in NYC. Once UncleBeer schlepped a sixpack all the way from Toledo to Chicago for me, in return for which I presented him with my firstborn.

Has anyone tried Blenheim's Ginger Ale? It's a South Carolina product, available by mail order (they advertise in The New Yorker), and some food writers I respect call it the best ginger ale in the civilized world. I'd love to get a Teeming Millions opinion before I plunked down cash money for a case.

Oh, yeah. On the rare occasions I partake of a sody water, I go for Dr. Brown's fine products...the Cream Soda or the Black Cherry Soda. I don't do the Cel-Ray Tonic.

Reed's Ginger Brew.

No processed suger, lots of taste. Comes in three "strengths"- original, premium and extra. I like the more gingery ones. My favorite substitute when I want a beer and can't have it. I think they also make that Spiced Apple Brew, as well as a raspberry ginger brew.

The extra ginger brew is quite yummy with a little tequila and OJ!

I'd forgotten. Its called 50/50. I can't find it west here, but I had it in the East. ANyone ever had 50/50?
It's very grapefruity.

Orange Crush. Fanta Grape. Mountain Dew. I rarely drink anything other that water, but when I do I don't drink the cola type drinks.

Vernor's is great stuff! It's been available in western PA since at least the mid '70s. Unfortunately, I think that they changed the recipe. It doesn't taste nearly as strong now as it used to. I liked it when Vernor's caused you pain if you inhaled anywhere near the stuff....

Yes. Yes, it is. My grandmother used to give it to us when we had colds. I've also proven myself capable of subsisting on 50/50, pickles, and Reese's peanut butter cups. That was an odd week....

Dr. Pepper (usually the Diet variety) and Mountain Dew.
I'll second Reality Chuck and Adirondack Soda simply because I used to live on their sodas in college. The Adirondack brand was quite a bit cheaper then the rest of the brands at the time and they made a damn good Root Beer, haven't had any lately though.

I knew there had to be another bitter lemon lover out there. I've only ever had the Canada Dry, not Schweppes. Haven't found either in Columbus for a couple years.

Diet Mt. Dew is my addiction, but I like Fresca, Vernor's, and Clearly Canadian's blackberry. One soda I remember drinking a lot of as a kid was Blue Sky; soda the flavor and color of blue popsicles. I haven't seen it in twenty years, though.

Ale-8-1...it's a Kentucky product, very hard to find outside the state. (Until they recently started canning some of it in Elizabethtown, it was hard to get it west of Lexington; it doesn't matter, since civilized people don't drink it out of a can, anyway.)

It is sort-of ginger ale, not too spicy and very sweet, and flavored with what I honestly believe is Cascade hops. (It's a well-kept secret, of course.) It comes in thick-glass 12-oz returnable bottles with a 20 cent deposit. (It also comes in various nonreturnable bottles and the aforementioned cans, but who cares?) Conventional wisdom is that it contains considerably more sugar and caffeine than most soft drinks, but it's not the case. (Much of the rumor comes from their early-20th-century slogan, "For Bracing Pep".)

It's the perfect beverage for a humid Kentucky summer, goes well with a nice salty bag of peanuts (which some purists actually pour straight into the bottle), and mixes nicely with Maker's Mark to form what I call the Glass of Bluegrass. If you're ever rolling through the state, I suggest you pick one up.

I like anything sweet--Adirondack grape, Orange Crush (or Sunkist), Snapple pink lemonade. I have Mt. Dew for breakfast.

Lately I'm hooked on an odd drink called DrinkBarli Green Apple Drink.

Comes in a bottle the shape of a Bear (I bought it first at my daughter's begging), and says it's "Made in Austria Europe".

They have such different flavors there.
When I was in Wein, I loved the drink made of cabbage. But it didn't taste like saurkraut, but very much like 7-up.

I mostly like seltzer, mostly. They all sort of taste the same, so brand doesn't really matter, although lemon lime flavored is the best. Cream soda is good, too. I love ginger ale, but I've never had the kind that gets you high on the fumes.

Orangina is pretty good. It's rare and costs a lot here, though.

Some people like to drink chocolate milk mixed with diet coke, a grim fact of which I was reminded today. That is just gross.

half and half? Its marketed by Nantucket Nectars, they are spreading cross country but available everywhere on the east coast. The best though is Nantucket Nectars Orange Mango, I get it by the case.

One of my all time favorites I have only had once. It was Peach Crush. Just like Orange Crush, but peach flavored. I only found it in Alamagordo, New Mexico a few years ago while on a camping trip. No one I have asked here in Colorado can find it to special order. I just recently found Stewarts Peach Soda and that is good, but a little to sweet. Stewarts Ginger Beer is most excellent also.
