Ok, here's one I thought everyone could relate to...
What's the worst bit of goofing off you've every done while working? If it's during business hours you get a bonus point :D
My worst is pretty mild, I think...
i go the can every day at the dame time for 30 or so minutes and get paid for it...hehe
I guess also waisting an entire day surfing the new would do as well...

Playing solitaire on the 'puter. When games became available at work a few years ago, it was obvious to many that a lot of employees were goofing off, so the techs were told to remove all the games. My son (a tech) told me how to download solitaire at home to a diskette, which I took to work and I now play there -- too much. Mostly because I'm so freaking bored with my job. some days I manage to get a lot of work done, but when I get frustrated or need a break, back to solitaire I go. Or when I'm put on hold (which is often), I play it. Another employee who happened to see my solitaire minimized at the bottom of my screen told me she did the same thing (brought it in on a diskette). some friends have e-mailed me games which I play occasionally too.

Actually...I was kind of fibbing...the worst thing I did was tell the people that I would be in an important meeting for the afternoon...then I went to the show :D

Yes! elf bowling - one of our contractors sent us that one as well as the snowball fight, and the frog catapult -- the frogs are my favorite; haven't been able to win with the 3 birds.

I left work and went with three other people to the 1:00 showing of There's Something About Mary and then went back to work. Nobody even noticed that I was gone, or at least nobody ever questioned me about it. I kept meaning to repeat the outing but then I quit that job.

I used to have a coworker who did this everyday. He said he was so important he got paid to take a dump.
This same person would come in about once a month and announce that today was a "no work day." This meant he was going to try and goof off the whole shift and not a a single productive thing. He was often very sucessful.

The SDMB is my time waster at work. I wouldn't have time to be here if I was home now.

There's always goofing off at my work, which usually involves sitting around and eating. The latest 'thing' is chatting on our new 'for work purpose only' walky talky. Also, one time I was bored so I did my homework...
(Keep in mind I'm a student with only a part-time job)

What Kind of Sexist remark is that  :p to complain about Female Co-Workers having a special Time so they can all go together ... I think that policy is very progressive .. OH what ... Just a Typo .... [b] Never Mind[b]
Having to stop goofing off...
Also, getting my billable hours in.
If I were a legal secretary, I would be able to goof off with impunity [though it helps to be discreet if others are busy]if the attorneys I work for had nothing for me to do. However, paralegals and attorneys in most private firms have billable hour requirements. Fortunately, paralegal requirements at my firm are reasonable.
I don't get the internet on my desktop, so I can't use the SDMB during work hours (normally). I used to have a lot of games installed on my computer, though they were lost during our last computer upgrade.
I do have e-mail at my desktop, so if any of you become friends with me, e-mail me during work hours--I'm lonely.

um, let me think, ways I goof off at work...
1) Listen to hockey games over the internet
2) post on the SDMB
3) throw around footballs in the building
4) 3 nerf dart guns and 1 vortex gun
5) color Gameboy
6) juggling or Diablo
7) drawer full of candy
8) constant talking with other co-workers
9) surfing the web in general....
the list does continue...

I feel like I'm following DRY around. I'm not really. (Unless you want me to) ;)
Or maybe he's just posting to a lot of topics tonight. If that's true, Go DRY!
What was the topic again? I forgot. Dang. Oh yes, goofing off at work. I NEVER do this. Okay, that's a lie. Sometimes I say I'm going to get a drink and then I visit everyone from my office to the breakroom. Other times I call my sister at work and chat with her. Or I call Shayna and talk about MPSIMS and funny posts.
Most of the time I get online and surf the web. Or I edit a soap opera discussion board. Since my monitor faces away from my door I can pretty much play and close the screen or minimize it if anyone walks in.

I'm not sure what you mean, Grace. Where have you been following me around? I'm sure I'd have noticed an attractive and charming female such as yourself behind me (as contrasted by the trolls and persona non grata and LAWYERS I normally associate with)
Of course I would LOVE you to keep following me around. (I'll try to come up with an appropriate Shakespeare quote later.) :)
Ya know, it seems I'm following Shayna around some, and since you know her, maybe the three of us could..
Oops. You'll probably get on the phone with her and say "I'm glad this freak lives near YOU!"

I don't get web access at my desktop (They only give it to the attorneys because they're afraid the rest of us will goof off. But: 1) If I have work to do, I've got to do it, potential distractions or no. In case they don't realize it, the TELEPHONE makes a GREAT distraction, if I'm looking for an excuse, 2) WTF do they think the attorneys here do with the net?), but I do get e-mail. Which is a hell of a distraction. :)
When we moved into our present office, my computer monitor was facing the doorway. SCREW THAT!!
That was the FIRST thing I changed when I went into my new office. :D
I'se going to ask you what "GL" stands for on your profile.
Then, as I was about to send this off and reread your quote, I was going to ask which soap. Even I can put two and two together (I hope)

HAHHAHAHAHA I can top you all! I used to work construction as a clean up guy. I would put in about maybe 10 hours of work a week. I'd get sent to clean up a house. I'd take an hour to get there, do a half hours worth of work, go to lunch for an hour and a half, come back, work for an hour, and go home. I'd get paid for eight hours, 8-4:30. Usually, thought, I'd only be at work from 8-2 or so. Most of it wasn't even working. I got bold quite often and took off at 11 or so, and sometimes I was daring enough to just go straight home after I checked in with home office. They kept sending me to a distant site that was near my house, so I'd go sweep a room and go home for the day. HAHAHAH they never caught on. I can't tell you how many times I'd nap in a closet, or sleep in the rafters for a few hours on a hot day... It was the good life. Now that I'm in retail I rarely get a chance to fuck around.

I have a friend who was like this. (Yeah--it really was a friend, not me, LOL)
He was a "runner" for law firms, before messenger services were used as much (or maybe the law firm thought it was cheaper to hire people like my friend).
Anyway, he knew all the "outs"--how long something SHOULD take to get from point A to point B. However, he became expert at driving 80-90 MPH, double parking and making "quickie" deliveries, the works. And he'd always set it up so he could call work towards the end of the day and say "Hey--by the time I get back into the office it'll be time for me to clock out. Can I just go home instead of coming back?"
They'd say, "Sure." Not realizing that he WAS CALLING FROM HOME, WHERE HE'D BEEN FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF HOURS. :D :D
I had another friend who didn't know the first, who also held a similar position at a different firm. He had similar stories, and would often regale me with tales about how he goofed off, and got drunk with other friends who held this type of position, in the parking lot of a local supermarket.
No wonder why law firms use messenger services today ;)

goofing off at work?
i thought this was work...
lets see... i post to the SDMB,
check my email and reply to friends throughout the day,
surf the web, mostly The Onion and The Register to check on the BOFH, maybe some more SDMB...
go to the can every hour to waste some time,
call my machine at home, check my cell phone messages,...
call my girlfriend, call my buddy,
post to the SDMB....
take a really long lunch,
sometimes sleep in my chair for an hour or two...
usually start my day at 9am, and go home at 2:30 or 3pm.
not bad huh?
when i'm so bored i can't even sleep or surf, i play starcraft over the net.

Surf the Web a lot, post to Straight Dope, bid
on ebay, make copies and envelopes to send $ for
ebay stuff, play Free Cell (greatest computer
game ever!). I work in an office where I collect
a lot of cash money, and spend a lot of time alone.
As long as the work gets done and I don't steal
(or get caught), they don't care what I do.
I figure all this gets balanced by the amount
of time I think about work when I'm not there.

Then there was my last co-op job...my scheduled hours were 08:00 to 16:00. The last 2 months I was there, I would show up at 10:30, play euchre during a 45 minute break. Lunch for an hour and pack up and go around 14:00.
No one said anything...talk about encouraging bad behaviour

Who ho ho!! Keep it up. Flattery will get you EVERYWHERE! I posted a lot more than usual last night. I'm a woman of few words (on the net) normally. Since my in-laws visited this weekend, I must've had a lot of pent up typing I had to get out. I posted more last night than I ever have before. It seems that every topic I went in, you were there.
Of course if you keep up the flattery, I may very well become a cyber stalker. LOL

You got it. When we first signed up with AOL my husband thought he was really clever by giving me that screen name. Now I use it everywhere with the exception of this board. I don't watch the show anymore. Haven't in years but the name sorta stuck. I still edit the Guiding Light board just to help out the guy that owns the website. Fortunately they're a good group of people so I rarely have to do anything but delete old posts when the board gets too heavy with posts.

As you may have seen in another thread, my family situation (aunt, not in-laws) caused me to have a lot of pent up typing as well. So I can relate.

If anyone would stalk me, after I was through being flattered, I'd advise them to seek professional help. Not for any psychoses, but for an obvious lack of taste.

Just lucky I guess! :P Look at it this way, DRY and I are keeping the topic from falling to page 2. That makes it a better chance for others to see the topic and answer about goofing off at work.
If it makes you feel any better, how about I just think my nasty, dirty little thoughts? Then again, what's the fun if you can't share. Eh??
Or even better, you can join in and compliment me on my....uh, ahhhhh, :::cough::: typing skills.

As I have posted before, I work 40 hours/week and I spend almost all of them right here on the SDMB. Sometimes I check my e-mail but mostly, I just post and read here.
My job is such that I don't really have much to do but I have to be here in almost a watchdog capacity. I'm not even really allowed to leave my office except to go to the bathroom (usually once a night) so I have lots of time to surf.
Frighteningly, I am the most competent employee in my department. I do what little work I have to do, I do it right and often, I do more than required--which confuses the hell out of my slacking co-workers. (I call them slacking because they don't even do the work they are supposed to do and when they do work, they do it badly.)

I mentioned this topic to Shayna but I think she's too busy terrorizing her fellow Prom Queen nominees. Something about cutting holes in swimsuits and replacing hair mousse with Nair.

I tried but the parrot kept falling off my shoulder and the wooden peg leg chafes.
You guys are all amateurs. I added it all up once and it turns out I do about 6.5 work days (52 hours) worth of work in about 6 months.
Let's see... I play darts accross the hall in another guy's office. Smetimes we play golf in the boss's office. We bring movies to work sometimes and watch them in the training room. I've spent 2 hours at a time on the back dock, smoking my pipe. This morning I slept for an hour and a half. I took a 3 hour lunch once.
Oh yeah... and every once in a while, 5 or 6 of us will go down to one of the computer labs and play Allegiance for hours on end.
I think I actually did some work last week... I can't remember what though.

As far as goofing off goes, I kinda go in spurts. Sometimes I work so hard I go days or weeks without doing anything but work. Then other times (like this week), I'll goof off most of the day.
The thing you have to do is master a 90-10 split. Goof of 90% of the day and get your work done in 10% of the time.
Yesterday I reached an all time high in goofing off. Not only did I play on the board most of the day but I also called my boss at home and asked her to stop at the ice cream store bring me an ice cream sandwich. When she got to the office, I told her I'd finished a project she had me working on and then kicked back and took a 20 minute break while we all chatted and ate ice cream.

Tell her to be careful. Cut holes in the wrong places, and she could actually IMPROVE her fellow nominees' chances!
The Nair thing might work, though. ;)

Okay, I've heard enough!! All of you guys are fired!!
I get to work at home and I never goof off. Never.
Oh, sometimes I swim for a while during the day but that is exercise. It keeps me healthy so I can work even harder.
If I should happen to shoot a few games of pool, that sharpens my eye so I can spot details in work projects so that isn't goofing off. That helps my job performance.
If, while I am exercising in the pool, I should happen to fall into conversation with some bikini clad young lady, I am only practicing my interviewing skills, so that benefits my job performance, doesn't it?
And a little nap two or three times a day never hurt anyone, right? Being rested improves my job performance.
But you guys, man, you guys are just plain goofing off. Shameful behavior.

"(Grace's) boyfriend's back and you're gonna be sorry...
hey la, hey la, (her) boyfriend's back" (see, I don't always quote Shakespeare)
Fortunately, *I'm* in a somewhat better mood than Grace...
Grace, don't be so hard on him. Especially that part about following us around. It's because of you following me around that we got together. Kiss, kiss.
Anyway, I not only have no time to fool around on the job lately, I've had to work a lot of overtime. (Which is why I didn't even get on the boards until after 1am this morning)

Fortunately, *I'm* in a somewhat better mood than Grace...
You know I was in a good mood before I read that topic in the pit. I thought it was light-hearted and fun. Even when others went in to the topic and said stuff. I knew it was all in fun or at least not mean-spirited.
But once I apologized for flirting there (even though I know you don't agree) and moved on, you be certain I'm gonna get ticked when someone scolds me. Especially when I apologized the day before! If he'd taken the time to read the rest of the topic, even skimming past those sig lines he hates so much, he would've seen that I apologized. If he's gonna miss (or skip past) an important part of the topic, your damn right I'm gonna say something.
Once I read that post in the Pit and then saw another comment here, well I just got really angry. Let’s just blame it on my Spanish temper.
It's because of you following me around that we got together. Kiss, kiss.
To quote Charlie Sheen (Richard "Dick" Brewer) from Young Guns "That's a fargon lie and you know it!" I wasn't following you around. It just seemed that way. :D Besides, if I hadn't said something you might have never noticed me and who would you've flirted with then?

I don't need to goof off at work.
I'm a highway flagman this summer.
I'm paid to stand around.

My job is basically telling somebody to go tell somebody else to press buttons on a machine . So I have lots of goofing off time and like a lot of previous posters I spend a great deal of it here. I also usually blow a couple of hours walking around talking to anybody I meet on the production floor . I'm thinking of putting Lemmings on my comp. but I think that would get me sacked for not doing any work .
But once I apologized for flirting there (even though I know you don't agree) and moved on, you be certain I'm gonna get ticked when someone scolds me. Especially when I apologized the day before.

I don't think what we did was that big a deal because the pit is basically anything goes, as far as I'm concerned (with the exception of really ugly personal/racist stuff, etc). If you think about it, Aha's original thread isn't really Pit material: it's not flaming, it doesn't really have to do with complaints, or administration or the SDMB. (I suppose you could say that Aha's complaining that he hasn't been welcomed, but that's really pushing it)
I don't really think anyone should have been really put out or offended by our hijack.
I agree that Dan should have noticed that you had apologized before. I also think that to the extent he wanted to complain, good naturedly or not, it's more apropos to do it in the pit thread, than this one.
But it's no big thing to me, though. ::shrug::
And I LOOVE your Spanish temper. :)

Do I have to pull up your own quote? (Like I'm throughly unfamiliar with searching and quoting..) ;)
Oh, I appreciate your saying something, but I might have noticed you eventually. And I like to think I'd have found someone to flirt with--they just wouldn't be as cute as you!
"Then come kiss me, sweet and twenty" :)

Ahem...to bring this thread back on topic, after reading SteelToes' and yojimbo's posts, I'm convinced ALL of you have better jobs than me.

All Dry-humping aside.....
In terms of work to money ratio, I have the best job in the world. I work evenings, babysitting a computer system during the actual work shift. I usually work 30-40 hours a week, and do maybe an hour's worth of actual work. There are so many good things about this:
1) My immediate supervisor is gone every day by the time I get here. He was hired recently, so I have never spoken to the man. His total communication to me consists of forwarding one, count 'em, one email to me.
2) His boss, who I do see, is fully aware of how little I work and is great with it. He created my position and told me when he hired me that it was purely for show.
3) Nobody who is here when I am knows what I do.
4) We have a high-speed internet connection.
5) They pay me an ungodly amount of money, considering what I contribute.
My only complaint is that my computer is too old to play the really good games. And I could use new speakers. But even I have trouble justifying anything like that.
As for specifics, well, I'm proud to say I've only fallen asleep once. I regularly spend hours upon hours here. I play games, find ways around the mp3 block they installed on our web server, and just generally screw around. During school, work is a planned- and depended-upon time for homework and studying.
Frankly, I could give a better answer if I had been asked what I do that's productive at work.

Sometimes, to occupy my time wasted at work, I try to see how many threads I can be the most recent poster on in a row. Currently, I am at 7.
Plus, it keeps me typing like a maniac, so everyone around thinks I'm very busy.
