Today I ran across a discussion with a lot of heat (passionate expressions) and smoke (erroneous statements) but very little enlightment (factual information).

There are those posting replies who have a great diversity of knowledge but with little if any depth, and on the other hand those with a great depth of knowledge about one or fewer subjects.

A 'little' knowledge is a dangerous thing! Causes those who posses it to run off at the mouth (keyboard) with all sorts of nonsence.

Just one? You weren't looking very hard. We've got dozens of those.

Today I ran across a post which made absolutely no sense but appeared to be some sort of complaint about people who didn't know what they were talking about.

A little keyboard is a dangerous thing! Because those who possess one will run off half-formed thoughts and confuse the hell out of everyone.

It might have something to do with this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?p=5080051#post5080051). Then again, it might not.

The irony that the last sentence of the OP was not only incomplete but also contained 2 spelling errors has not escaped me.

psssst! spingears, you might want to ask a Moderator to move these threads to the BBQ Pit where content-free rants are more typically posted, particularly when they tend to be complaints about the board that do not seem to have much purpose beyond complaining.

Yea, I was going through GD one time and there were these two people arguing back and forth about what halibut is best used for processing green beans but then some jerk who I would rather see lurk stopped by to say that if it was not for the GOP that the bactriophage that is found inside of the halibut's stomach would be syntheticly created and then turned into a processing lubricant but - OH, HEY, LOOK! A QUARTER!

There are those posting replies who have a great diversity of knowledge but with little if any depth, and on the other hand those with a great depth of knowledge about one or fewer subjects.
So, is this good or bad? It would really suck if everybody had one or two things they were experts on, because we'd constantly be getting questions nobody had a clue about. On the other hand, having a bunch of vaguely-informed polyglots would also suck, because we could never get to the bottom of anything, just scratch the surface.

Like those drawings we did in grade school where you do one crayon drawing with lots of colors, then cover it in black crayon, then scratch the black crayon off.

Speaking of non sequiturs.
