View Full Version : Bad Movies We Love

Edwardina

How about this:

Which movies are our guilty pleasures? Movies that we are embarrassed to admit we enjoyed.

I guess my big one would be Hudson Hawk. Everyone hated that one, but I thought it was a hoot.

So many movies are called bad, when they have in fact achieved their aim. Some were meant to be cheesy. I think you can really only call a movie bad if it's meant to be scary (really) and only makes you laugh, or if it completely misses the mark in some other fundamental way. A movie is not bad just because you don't care for it, if it in fact achieved it's aim. Otherwise, I would call Seven bad, and that was really a very good film, but it was just not my cup of tea.

What movies are your guilty pleasures, the ones that aren't bad, they're just drawn that way?

Up The Creek. I will watch it each and every time it comes on TV. It kills me to this day, and I have NO IDEA WHY.

There are lots of them. If we restrict ourselves to movies that were not intended to be bad, then my picks are:

Plan 9 from Outer sace (the immortal)
Robot Monster

The Bruce Kimmel masterpieces:
The First Nudie Musical
The Creature that wasn't Nice (aka Starship)

(This last one is a musical version of Alien. I kid you not. Cindy williams stars in both of Kimmel's movies, Patrick MacNee in the second, and Ron Howard has a cameo in Nudie Musical)

Godzilla movies

How awful of me NOT to include Ice Pirates.

The robots made the movie for me. Especially the Pimp robot. No doubt, that's where the inspiration for Pimpbot 5000 came from!

Just saw one of my faves the other night on TV: "The Best of Everything" (1959).

One of the all-time great soap operas about Innocent Working Girls in The Big City. Hope Lange, Diane Baker and Suzy Parker work in a Park Avenue publishing house and are set upon by mean bosses (Joan Crawford at her Joanniest), slimey men, and wear great clothes (by Jean Louis, of course!).

It's a treat of a film, and you HAVE to eat Pepperidge Farm cookies while youm watch it, in your Baby Doll nightie.

I'll have to agree with Mr. Cynical. Up The Creek is one funny show. I laugh 'til I have tears in my eyes every time I watch that one.

One of my all-time favs: Rocky Horror Picture Show. Used to go to that movie once a month. Dressed up like Dr. Frankenfurter, threw rice, toast, hot-dogs, cards, toilet paper, etc.. LOVED that movie, but have you ever tried to watch it by yourself, without all the audience participation?? BAAAAAD movie!!

Ozone - I have to agree: Rocky Horror without audience participation? Awful!

I don't know if it was actually considered 'bad,' but "Raising Arizona" w/ Nicholas Cage & Holly Hunter is about the only movie I have ever watched 3-4 times - and Loved It every time.

I love "Rock and Roll High School." It's so terrible, but I have it on tape and watch it all the time. I also like "Officer and a Gentleman" and "Shock Treatment," the terrible follow-up to RHPS.

Tally-Ho
06-08-2000, 03:18 PM
I definitely get some guilty pleasure from watching "Earth Girls Are Easy" with Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, and Jim Carrey. Bad movie but I love it anyway.

Oh and my dad got me hooked on those cheesy, hormonal, bikini movies. You know the ones where some store, monoment, etc. is in trouble and the kids all decide to raise the money to save it by wandering around in bikinis for the rest of the movie. They were often the fodder of USA's "UP all night" show. Not your usual Father/Daughter bonding activity. :)

Two of the most truly awful movies of all time that I just have to watch when they come on late-night t.v. are "Logan's Run" and "Saturn 3." By pure coincidence(?) both these dogs feature Farrah Fawcett in skimpy mid-70s "futuristic" (i.e. glittery disco) outfits. These movies are the epitome of horrible sci-fi dreck, but I'm hypnotically enthralled by them whenever I see them.

Nah...there are two people in the world that don't think "Hudson Hawk" sucks...I'm the other one. If you loved "Robin Hood Men in Tights" there are two of us on that too.

But for sheer badmoviesyouloveitiveness you can't beat "Porky's". Kim Catrell with sweat sox and without the wrinkles. "Why do they call her Lassie?"

JBENZ, I love the whole porky's series.

Incidentally, I once dated a gal who was remarkably similar in volume to that same character.

We didn't date long, it was embarassing!

Another one of my Faves: The Frighteners. Well, everyone ELSE thought it was bad.

Logan's Run is a bad movie?

Yuk yuk. However, I do date my love of sci fi to it, because it was the first futuristic movie I'd ever seen. I'd say I was about 7.

I've seen Beeteljuice so many times that I can see all the plot flaws. Maybe others think it's a bad movie but I love it. Raising Arizona, too. It's definately NOT a bad movie. ("Son, you've got a panty on your head.")

Wild Things ... with Matt Dillon and Neve Campbell.

Oh, my God, it was so bad. There were about 15 of us in the cinema and we were screaming in hysterics. Afterward it was all my flatmate and I could talk about for days. Definitely the most unintentionally hilarious movie I've ever seen.

Isn't that the movie that Denise Richards makes out with Neve Campbell--both topless?

ruadh
06-08-2000, 04:34 PM
Neve wasn't topless, but yes, there was a 3 way sex scene with the two girls and Matt. It wasn't nearly as interesting as the hype made it out to be.

The Evil Dead movies don't count, they knew exactly what they were doing. Those movies are parodies, and they are wonderful!

I also secretly liked Earth Girls Are Easy. Another guilty pleasure: Weird Science. I know, they accomplished exactly what they were trying to with that one, but it was still so hokey in parts, how could you not call it bad? The big scary bikers at the end, oh god!

Wow, some of the movies mentioned here are faves! Logan's Run, Raising Arizona? Hell yes!

How about Stealing Beauty? Everyone else hated that movie. I dig it.

My favorite lame movie is called The Chase with Charlie Sheen. This movie rocks! He kidnaps this girl, somewhat unintentionally, and the whole movie is about them running from the cops. Henry Rollins plays this funny-as-hell cop who is reminiscent of the show Cops. Anthony Keidis and Flea are these two wild vigilantes who chase after Sheen in their monster truck. The acting sucks, the plot sucks, everything sucks, but I laugh my ass off every time!

Amazon Women on the Moon is one of my favorites. I used to be amazed at the celebrities they roped into doing that thing.

I've never been to a midnight showing of RHPS and haven't been able to do the audience participation thing, but I actually enjoy the movie on its own merits. I love the music!

Electric Dreams about a man whose computer becomes self-aware and falls for the neighbor lady by accompanying her cello playing. Goofy as hell, but I always get misty when the computer self-destructs in the end.

Blade Runner: The critics say it's a bad movie, but I've always enjoyed it. I particularly enjoy the Director's Version where they cut out Harrison Ford's awkward narration.

"Grease" - the acting and plot are pretty bad, not to mention the horrible message it sends to young people (He doesn't like you? CHANGE!) but I just love it anyway. And I always thought Olivia Newton-John (WHO said she is gay? I want names!) looked better before the perm...

And I really love Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, with Leslie Warren and the dude who plays that Alan Quartermaine on General Hospital.

I'm a sucker for bad musicals, I guess...

Don't you hate when you post something and the millisecond AFTER you do so, you want to add something?

*sigh*

Have to agree with The Last Action Hero - I enjoyed it and didn't think it was as bad as everyone made out.

/rant on

And Luc Besson's Joan of Arc which I thought was a wonderful look at whether the maid of new orleans was delusionary or indeed blessed. I thought the deliberate ambiguity made i incredibly powerful and only added to Dustin Hoffman's character (excellent performance btw). And for those criticising Jovavich's performance I have nothing but scorn for. While I agree she isn't the world's best actor, here she did very well. SHe was playing a peasant girl with no education but unshakable conviction for godsake!! Which I thought she did very well.

Joan of Arc: A so-called bad movie which I loved.

I really loved this movie too. I watch it alone, in the dark, with a canlde lit and a window open. Sets the scene, ya know?

I like every cheesy 80's movie: Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, the Goonies, Dirty Dancing, Teen Witch, Twins, Joe Vs. the Volcano, BIG...And my most shameful, OVERBOARD, which I watch every time it's on. :)

Also, I loved the cop movies, all thought I've forgotten most of them - always if their was a dog sidekick.

My dad loved Paint Your Wagon (Clint Eastwood sings - badly!) For some reason, I like it too - maybe it brings up good childhood memories or maybe it's just a genetic defect. One my own volition, I think Clue (all three endings) is hilarious, and Real Genius is great!

Speaking of Rogers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella": Have any of you seen the remake with "Brandy" and Whitney Houston? My 5-year-old daughter loves it and I've endured it many times. The reason it's basically a bad movie is that it's got way too many songs and it's too, too, long. (Both versions.)

In this remake, Whitney adds another song at the end that's pure torture to watch. She produced the movie and it's an ego trip for her. She plays the fairy godmother. The whole thing is a multi-ethnic extravaganza. Whoopie Goldberg plays the prince's mother and she actually sings a few lines.

Speaking of actors painfully singing, remember Marlon Brando singing in "Guys and Dolls?" Yipes.

For Hudson Hawk make it 5.

I've always loved Logan's Run even though it was kind of bad.

For some reason I've always liked Tremors. Giant worms attacking!

Spaced Invaders -- the earth is invaded by 5 incompetent Martians.

Paint Your Wagon -- Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin singing. What were they thinking?

Okay . . .

I can second the votes for Overboard, Dirty Dancing, Tremors (God, *so* funny), and Paint Your Wagon. All were great and I would watch them again.

More confessions:

Hard Target, with Jean-Claude Van Damme. When you watch him slide his coat back from his hip right before kicking someone in the head, just like the cowboys do in Westerns right before they draw their guns, that is some classic cheese.

Starship Troopers, which is gaining cult status, but it is still hard to admit that you like it.

Strictly Ballroom, another movie (Aussie import) that was "bad" on purpose, but I just love it!!!

And in the same vein, how about Death Before Dishonor with Brian Keith and the guy that played Hunter(?) on TV. U.S. Marines kick ass in Lebanon. Even a right-winger like me could see the propaganda machine rolling along in this one.

Army of Darkness is (loosely) part of the Evil Dead series. Thus, it automatically receives "good" movie status.

I will watch Ghostbusters and Beetlejuice everytime they are on. I don't know, I'm just not tired of them yet. I mean, how many time can you see a movie in ten years?
Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Teen Wolf, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, Dirty Dancing, and Red Dawn, Big...I love these movies too.
But for the first time ever, I will reveal my deepest, darkest guilty pleasure.
Revenge of the Nerds
Oh, but it gets worse. I like ALL of them. There are 4. I know I know, I don't think it can be worse. The movies make me laugh, and laugh, and laugh :)

Ah! The Goonies! I remember that movie. It's a nostalgia trip for a lot of people who are around 25 years old. I've found that a surprisingly large amount of people that age secretly liked it. I have to see Joe vs The Volcano again, too. Red Dawn sounds hilarious.

One of my personal favorites is Killer Klowns From Outer Space. I mean, the balloon animal bloodhounds, the human dummy, the evil popcorn, and of course the shadow puppet... that is one of the best works of art the human race has produced. Plus, it has a nifty title song by the Dickies.

Another recent candidate is Anaconda. Yeah, yeah, I know- but come on, didn't you spot the backwards waterfall? That was awesome. And it was quite a surprise at the end when the heroes discovered that lighting a snake on fire only makes it even more dangerous. I loved that part.

On the MST3K front, I really liked Puma Man, Overdrawn At The Memory Bank, and Manos: The Hands of Fate.

I have dreadful taste in movies. No modesty; honest fact.

Favorite "baddies":
* Beetlejuice: cracks me up every time.
* Escape from NY: the whole over-the-top atmosphere, but especially that great car w/ the candleabra on the fenders.
* The Fog: has it all; ghosts, lepers, shipwrecks, Adrienne Barbeau...
* The Thing: James Arness as a vegetable (who knew?), plucky WWII dialogue, mad scientists, the works.
* The immortal Plan 9 From Outer Space: the classic, the ultimate.
* Paint Your Wagon: or Seven Brides For Seven Brothers On Crack. Clint sings! Lee Marvin sings! The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band look uncomfortable!

Enough revealing myself as a low-brow dolt,

I may be the only person who will admit this, but I actually loved the short subjects they would sometimes show before the movies more than the movies themselves--some great stuff about sex education, cheating (in school--many of these were school films), General Hospital, drivers education (You haven't lived until you've seen "Last Clear Chance"). Great stuff!

Then there was the strangely androgenous "Mr. B. Natural"

These, as far as I am concerned, do not count as bad movies:
Raising Arizona
Beetlejuice
The Evil Dead Trilogy
Tremors
Better Off Dead
Ghostbusters

I'm glad I could set the record straight on that.

An actual bad movie that someone might enjoy the hell out of might be, strictly by way of example, oh, say, something like Ski School. But not Ski School 2, 'cause let's face it, that one just sucked.

*I Spit on Your Grave

You probably mean Meg Foster.

Several people have mentioned _Joe Versus the Volcano_. That's not a bad film. That's a good film that got some inexplicable bad reviews when it came out. It's now acquired a small cult reputation.

I liked The Shadow. :)

Does Mortal Kombat count?

I haven't unpacked my tape collection yet, so I can't really fill this out. I've seen about 50% of what appears on your average B-movie review website, tho.The Thing (50's), Ator, Both Conan movies, Charles Bronson as the vigilante, whatever that movie was. *shudder*

I've seen these, I won't do that again. The Shadow, Rocks however :)

One more for Hudson Hawk! My God, I thought I was the only one. Now I know I'm not a freak!

Raising Arizona, being a Coen Brothers movie...was critically acclaimed, IIRC...whatever, I love it, memorized it, yada yada

Whenever I think of bad movies that I can't get enough of, one invariably comes to mind: "Valley Girl". I was a pre-teen when it came out, and I guess it appeals to my masochistic tendencies by reminding me of all the cool middle school girls that wouldn't talk to me. Bitches.

Yes! The shorts were great! Remember the one for the phone company that was talking about the future of telephones? It was set at a World's Fair or somesuch. That's my favorite thing on any MST3K! Well, my favorite thing besides the time when Crow and Tom Servo dressed up as the little Japanese twin girls and summoned Mothra. That kills me....

I haven't seen the phone company one--damn, now I'm going to be haunted by trying to catch that one (I really do love these shorts even more than the movies). You don't happen to remember which movie this one was with, do you? Again, which movie?

I'm also surprised I haven't seen the "Mothra Girl" skit, as I thought I've seen all the Godzilla movies that were on MST3K. (I'm definitely a Godzilla fan)

But speaking of MST3K skits, my favorite ones were:

3) When the SOL Crew is hawking some Gamera action figure set, complete with all sorts of army figures and Barbie dolls.

2) The tribute to the Star Trek "Mirror, Mirror" episode, with the parallel universe.

But the very best one was:

1) The Orville Redenbacher skit! (I believe this one was one of the Godzilla or Gamera movies) Apparently, they were really worried about being sued over this. It's absolutely, positively hilarious! :D

Super Mario Brothers. Dennis Hopper is wonderful, Fiona Shaw fills the dress nicely and role as villaness, Bob Hoskins and John Legumaninzo (whatshisname) have fun too. I liked it.

The Beastmaster.

Flash Gordon.

The Last Dragon.

Buck Rogers In The Twenty-Forth Century.

And, the ultimate cheese movie: Raw Force: Invaders Of The Jade Tombs. This martial arts movie features (I kid you not) Cannibal monks and their evil zombie samuri minions. There's one scene when the hapless maiden is on a giant spit, and a cannibal monk is using a giant brush to spead BBQ sauce on her.

The henchmen who are dressed as the Village People are a hoot, too.

Okay, I think that this short was in Episode #608: Code Name: Diamond Head. The short with that episode is A Day At the Fair, which sounds right.

This was in Episode 213: Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster. Godzilla fought a giant lobster.

I think I remember that one. This (http://www.sloegincircus.com) site says that it's in Episode 212: Godzilla vs. Megalon, and I vaguely remember it.

I should watch some more MST3K soon.

running man is definitely one of the cheesiest movies out there but damn i can never get enough of it. i think it inspired the video game smash tv. also, starship troopers was pretty funny with all its military propaganda it used.. damn, those people who made starship troopers, robocop movies and total recall all have that sort of ridiculous propaganda that i have come to know and love.

I must have taken the wrong time to answer the call of nature, because I've seen this MST3K episode.

I missed a lot of MST3K when they changed from Comedy Central to--I think it's Sci-Fi now? I didn't get Sci-Fi for a long time thanks to my stupid cable provider.

How about Howard the Duck?

What were those two movies about the little robot guy who fought crime? He was like ET, only metal...I remember at the end of the second movie he got gold-plated.

I can't remember the name of those two but I loved them both.

I also loved Spaceballs and Revenge of the Nerds.

I love Summer School AND Exit to Eden! Those guys in Summer School who are all obsessed with horror movies crack me up! And everytime I see whatsherface on Ally McBeal I remember her humble beginnings as the surfer chick who hit on the teacher. I'll watch those movies anytime!

Other faves, I think many of these have been mentioned:
Dr. Detroit (oh yeah baby!)
Hairspray (the REAL Ricki Lake!)
Crybaby (this one warped me for years)
The Pirate Movie (Gee, I'd hate to be PILLAGED)

I'm sure I'll think of more!

Also, for those born around the year 1975, there was quite a debate going in my group of friends over which movie "defined" our generation ... Ferris Bueller's Day Off, or The Breakfast Club? Cast your vote!!

If you want to use that excuse, then I have to pick The Road Worrior.

Man, some of that stuff was just lame...but I still love it.

Bad???? No way Jose. The prequel "Mad Max" is crap in a box, but Road Warrior? Wez was my favorite character in that flick.

Now, as a former owner of a video store, I think I'm an authority on bad movies. Any Troma flick is just terrible.
Of course they are meant to be....do they qualify?

I would have to vote for The Breakfast Club. Great song, great cast, (Judd Nelson back when he was sexy), it's just a classic. My opinion is influenced by the fact that I didn't see Ferris Bueller until I was older, and I didn't really care for it.

In the (late 80s? early 90s?) Rowdy Roddy Piper did a sci-fi movie called "They Live". It actually had some pretty good production values, and contained the greates two-man brawl over sunglasses ever seen in a movie.

This, of course, can not hold a candle to his true coup-de-gras, "Hell Comes to Frog Town". You have to love that movie just from the title. Horrible horrible horrible movie. Bad plot. Terrible acting. Definate guilty pleasure. Ya gotta see it to believe it.

Starship Troopers, which is gaining cult status, but it is still hard to admit that you like it.

I would love to say that I liked that movie, but I can't. ST is by far my favorite work of fiction (I read it for the first time while in Army basic training, hiding it in my laundry bag to avoid confiscation). Verhoven's movie treatment of it makes me feel like crying.

No one has mentioned my personal fav yet:

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

I know, serious film buffs tend to like it, but it was pretty much a bomb with the general public. My roommate thinks it is stupid, but then he is collecting all of the Pierce Brosnan 007 movies on DVD. Plebeian.

There is one I always used to turn off whenever anyone came in the room and caught me watching it: The Neverending Story. It's a great movie, but when you're 19 or 20, living in an Army barracks with 100 or so other men, any movie with a body count of less than 75 is seen as less than manly. Now that I have a six-year-old, I can watch it without fear of embarassment as long as I can get him to stay in the room.

Floompy
06-13-2000, 07:41 AM
Well, I am guilty too: Short Circuit with Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenburg. I get all warm and mushy everytime I see that cute little machine!!!

And then there's "The Stuff", which was a 'B' horror movie about some deadly Yogurt-Monster that grows inside you after eating this ice-cream like food. And "Troll" with Sonny Bono. These movies are GREAT!!! If you can find them (Blockbuster probably won't have these two), they are VERY amusing.

Let me know if they get added to anyone else's list of BAD movies to love...

I tend to think of Labyrinth (swoonfully fantastic), Legend, and the Neverending Story as fantasy film staples, not movies one would be embarrassed to be caught watching, but hey, I guess it depends on who you are . . . In the barracks, huh? You've got more guts than me!

Oh yeah...Short Circuit. What a movie! I loved that one!

I also adored The Neverending Story.

Also...All Dogs Go To Heaven. I used to watch that movie all the time.

Does anyone remember Teen Witch? It had this girl who was a fork and then found out she was a witch, so she cast a spell to be popular, and she is! Of course, it has all the elements of a cheesy 80's movie, including a Tiffany-esque pop star.
