Turning off once you're on

OK, I've got myself in trouble. I set my defaults so that Email Notification is always on--now, how do I turn it off for some threads? The faq says you can turn it off by editting your post. That's not possible is it?

It used to be an interesting thread. Now, it's up to hundreds of replies that are just flames. I'm not interested in the thread anymore--and my mailbox is flooded with announcements that the thread has just been replied to.

E-mail the forum moderator and tell them which post you turned on e-mail notification. They can edit that post and un-check the proper box.

That may be a lot of work--especially since all my posts had the notification set, by default. It's not just one thread either. I'll try it.
