I swear to god if I see one more perfectly normal, civil, happy-go-lucky thread hijacked for some asinine, irrelevant low-blow political potshot, I'm gonna scream.

This is bullshit. (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=277205)

I did not see any point where the thread strayed from a discussion of names.

Do you have a better cite than just listing the thread?

A gratuitous "bullshit" is thrown in to make this reply Pit material.

Sorry I guess I hit submit sooner than I thought. Roger Thornhill's post noting that Jimmy Stewart did not fake his service record, which has zilch to do with the thread.

Oh yeah? But Bush is a liar! And Kerry lied about going to Vietnam! And the CBS memos were really written by Karl Rove, who wants Bush to put all the homosexuals in concentration camps! John Edwards has PINWORMS! And Clinton did all that too, PLUS he got a blow job! Disagree? You're an EVIL stoma-fucking pinko conservative lackey that HATES AMERICA and thinks the French are sexy!

Well, i like to think i'm a pretty smart guy, but i really don't even quite get what roger thornhill was supposed to be saying in that post. Was it a reference to Bush? If it was, it was pretty oblique and hardly the sort of thing that sent the thread running off the rails.

Maybe we should ask him exactly what he meant.

Well, i like to think i'm a pretty smart guy, but i really don't even quite get what roger thornhill was supposed to be saying in that post.Me, neither. Was he saying Bush faked his own records, or that they were faked out of necessity on Bush's behalf, or that Bush's records were faked because his character (allegedly) made it possible for his opponents to do so.

C'mon, rog, give us a clue!

Having said that, I think the OP has become somewhat overly sensitive to political hijacks. roger's's comment may have been a hijack attempt or just a random belittling thought, but either way it had no impact on the thread that I could see.

I totally agree with the OP. I'm really, really tired of getting half way through a fun thread in IMHO or MPSIMS and then somebody feels obligated to insert a political snipe at the Dems or Pubbies, thus hijacking the thread.

I can go to GD or The Pit if I want to participate in political discussions. You can start your own political thread in any forum you please. Are, say, 75 open threads with their subject centered around politics not enough for you?

I don't mean to imply that he took the thread off course in any way. But I stay out of Great Debates, and political threads in the pit for a reason: I don't wanna hear it. But seriously, there's no thread that is safe anymore; even in GQ someone will make a quick barb, and slinking off sheepishly when the mods admonish them. The thread I indicated was just the most recent example, and I guess the proverbial "last straw" for me.

I almost started a pit thread about the same topic. Want to bitch about Bush or Kerry? Fine, go do it somewhere else. Please stop pissing politics in happy threads.

I haven't been checking the boards as often lately because I'm so sick of reading the same shit thrown back and forth over and over, in threads where it doesn't belong.

same thread, line 20

"Isn't Gerald Ford a Republican? He lost to Carter in '76."

huh? who called Ford anything other than Gerold?

The original Post, makes the assumption than William Clintons given name was Bill.

Here are some examples

Donny Trump
Billy Clinton
Tommy Jefferson
Mikey Eisner

I too tire of endless, mindless jabs aimed mainly at the head of a party they do not understand. This applies to lefties and righties equally. But this thread is just dumbshit.

Forgive my tardiness, but I'm wary with being paged these days. 'No faked service record for Jimmy Stewart' was meant to convey my respect for the man for flying bombers in WWII, first and foremost. The media circus concerning Bush and Kerry's national service was the point of contrast.

I wasn't going to post in this thread, but since it's been revived, and in the Pit, I

That reminded me of my husband's sister. She and her husband don't watch news, they don't read newspapers, they don't pay any attention to anything political on the internet or anywhere else. My husband was talking to her and realized that she and her husband still believe that Saddam was at least partly responsible for 9/11! She and her husband still believe that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and that's why we went to war! It's bizarre to think someone in our own family is that uninformed. (well, my dad is too, but I can't break through to him)

If you never read GD or come into the Pit (though you're here now), how do you get your news? How did you find out about Saddam not having any weapons of mass destruction or not being part of 9/11? I'm just curious.

No shit, and if we can make it through the next administration without someone dragging out bullshit that may or may not happened during the previous administration of some time back, I'll be even happier.

Woah, sign of times to come? So, if Kerry wins, then all talk of all the bad things that Bushco did should cease? No one gets investigated? No one gets their ass thrown in jail? Forgive and forget? Sorry, I don't think President Kerry will just let these things go, nor should he. The historical record demands answers. My most fervent hope is that, if he wins, he'll appoint Vincent Bugliosi as Attorney General.

Less than a month to go until the election. And the sooner the better, if you ask me.

And think of the fun there'll be if Kerry wins, with threads such as "Is John a teeny bit too tough on gun control?" or "Nuanced views sought on JFKII's first 100 days in office".

There will be a few of those sorts of threads, sure, but not the sheer number of Bush-hating threads. Remember, Kerry is the SDMB's favorite son. Look at any Presidential poll thread and you'll see the inherent truth in that.

Hell, I'm tempted to keep the threads going for 4 more years even if Kerry wins. Bush has done a lot of evil; we'll need a lot of threads to cover it all. They're still talking about Hitler, and how long ago was that? ;)

Well, but, isn't he responsible for all the ills of America? Not that America has any ills, mind you, except a bunch of cheese-eating surrender monkey bleeding-heart French-looking Democrats and suchlike traitors, but if we just stay the course we'll pay for our health insurance with all those tax cuts we're getting and outsource the terrorist interrogations to our wonderful democracy-loving allies like Pakistan while we build a freedom-loving, democratized, oil-pumping Middle East and send all those abortion-loving queers back into the closet where they belong!

Or something like that, I dunno. I've been missing a lot of the memos lately.

Shall I confess one of my deepest, darkest secrets?

nearly unanimous chorus: Noooooo! Shut up!

OK, I will.

I heard about the Newsweek poll that showed Kerry holding a (statistically insignificant) lead after the debate. My first thought was, "Well, if Kerry wins, at least the moronic Left on the SDMB will shut the fuck up about Bush."

My second thought: Like there is any power on earth to make that happen.

You all are right: Win or lose, Bush will become for the left what Clinton was for the right. Economy goes back into recession? Bush's fault. More terrorist attacks? Bush's fault. Health care costs continue to rise? Bush's fault.

And worst of all, the punch line to every single political discussion for the next five years.

"But what about these notarized receipts, signed by Kerry, where he is using public funds to pay for Rottweiler-and-underage-Tijuana-hooker porn?"

"Well - well - BUSH LIED ABOUT WMD! HUH? HUH? WHAT ABOUT THAT!"
