View Full Version : I hate clubs...

... I mean, I really really hate them, but I can understand going to them if you want to dance (which is something else I don't get, but whatever).
What I absolutely can NOT understand is poser bars, i.e. places that are exactly like clubs - i.e. overdressed people trying to out-fabulous each other and get into the VIP room - but without the dance floor. What's the point??? I just don't get it.
Now don't get me wrong, I like a good night out as much as the next person, probably more than the next person actually - but my idea of a good night out is finding a nice comfortable pub to sit (yes, sit) in and have all the pints I want to have without feeling like all eyes are on the shoes I'm wearing or whatever.
I also hate cocaine. Maybe that's my problem.
So, am I alone in this?

Not at all.
I really don't enjoy screaming at people I'm sitting next to. I enjoy a peaceful pub or bar where there's perhaps a few who are up for new acquaintance, conversation is possible and it doesn't really matter how you're attired.
Of course, every now and then a dive crawl can be fun...

Oops, I actually meant to put this in IMHO. (though the sentiments are actually pit-like) Moderator feel free to move it...

Oh, AM I with you on this -- and here I've been thinking I'm the only one!!
Hate clubs, love bars. Go sit, snack, chat, play a couple rounds of pool, a couple rounds of darts, go home.
No pressure, no cover charge, little noise (unless that really good local blues band shows up), women wearing skirts and road crew guys who just got off work standing next to each other.
Fuck BenniTGIApple etc. - those are bar wannabes. Give me a place where the most expensive drink is $2.75 and the most expensive meal is 7 bucks, comes in a plastic basket, and is deep fried. I'm here for a couple of drinks, not duck a l'orange or a fashion show.

You hate clubs, yet you continue to go.
What's wrong with this picture?
I haven't been in clubs in years. It's easy not to go.

I don't "continue" to go actually. I haven't been to a club in ages.

You are not alone, rudah. I loathe crowded, trendy "in spots" and never understood the attraction. They're simply the opposite of everything that's fun. Even the people-watching gets stale after about 10 minutes. (And I mean that in the sense of peering at the animals in a zoo.)
Dunno, guess it's good that people are wired differently and the "see and be seen" crowd aren't cluttering up other places.

What is your problem with clubs? Do you live next to one? Do they keep you up at night? Did you have a bad experience at one? Maybe you can't stand the thought that people are having more fun than you. Are people not allowed that have an opinion that is diffrent that your?
I don't like clubs, I don't go, I have no problem with them. I know a lot of people that enjoy them. I really don't see a problem with going. I could see you mentioning things if it had any relavance but it seem like you hate them just for the sake of hating them. I would not like to et a wrong opinion of you so could you please enlighten me on why you hate clubs so much?

I, too, despise clubs with a vengeance. I hate loud, I hate dancing (too much physcial activity), and I hate having to be in such close contact with so many people I don't know.
I like sitting and talking. I hate having to shout over the noise of a crappy garage band and their punker pals who come to cheer them on.

Speaking strictly for myself here, not for rudah, it isn't a case of hating them just to have something to hate. But once in a while politeness dictates you bow to the will of a companion or group and you end up going someplace you hate. It isn't always possible to avoid places you hate.
rudah is just expressing a strong opinion--one based on good taste and great wisdom, since I share it--that if clubs have some great attractions, they're well hidden. The OP isn't saying, "destroy them all!"; it just expresses an opinion.
(BTW, I was kidding in the "taste and wisdom" remark.)

I don't like "clubs"; I like one particular club (Sky), but that's because I like to dance (to 80's dance music) and I don't drink. Also, I don't go there to meet; I do that on the Internet. If I meet there, bonus, but I go there to dance.
The only problem is when I get home, my clothes stink of cigarettes.

Yah, I hate clubs too. An assegai, now there's a real man's weapon. Split a guy from shoulder to jock in one swipe.
Huh? Wassat? Oh CLUBS, my bad...

The other problem with the poser/exclusive clubs is that it has a trickle down effect . Most clubs/pubs in the area want to copy them and employ dickhead bouncers on the door who stop a large percentage of people at the door . You might think that this would be counter productive but it must work because the amount of clubs/pubs that are going this way in my part of the world is scary .
As to the OP , fucking A ruadh.

Alright, somebody must go to these places (poser bars, I mean, not clubs). I am still waiting for someone to explain what the attraction is. Anyone?

I'm guessing here, this is just a flyer, but do you think it might have something to do with trying to get laid?
Hey, if it works for them, have at it. I prefer mine with one pool table, five beers on tap, and old friends.

Who the hell needs to go to a place like that to get laid though. There's as much chance in your average city pub (in my experience anyway) and you don't need to be wearing Gucci to get in.
I find it hard to believe anyone actually gets laid in places like that anyway, whenever I've been dragged to one of these places they're full of beautiful women and really sad desperate looking loser men who none of these women would touch with a ten foot pole.
Hmm, maybe it's just as well this stayed in the Pit :)

ruadh comments: I find it hard to believe anyone actually gets laid in places like that anyway
Well, I certainly hope not; they should go home, or at least to a motel, first.

What I find worse than the overpriced drinks, the absurd cover charges, the mediocre music, and the surly staff is that clubs are so astoundingly boring. When I used to go to such places (often dragged by well-meaning friends) I never had a good time unless I happened to meet a young lady, and then I'd get us out as soon as possible.
I never could quite figure it out. Get a group of people together in a crowded club and it's usually stultifying. Get many of the same people together in a private residence and it's a damn good time.
I remember once falling asleep in a chair at local club. At around 1:30AM a hostess came over and KICKED me. When I responded irately, she said that she had assumed I was drunk and that it often took a kick to get some drunks moving on home. The truth was the show had been so godawfully dull that I found a place to relax until, as designated driver, I could take home my friends. Needless to say I never went back.

Maybe you just don't live near good clubs biotop? I live in SF, and while there are a number of obnoxious clubs, there are quite a few good ones. As for the poser bars? Peopele go there to look cool and make a scence and of course get laid. I'm not saying they do, although there are some where you are basicly garaunteed of such.
