View Full Version : Still not out on DVD

Well, this idea has been done before, but I think it's time for another round.

What movies would you like to see released on DVD that aren't currently available?

Personally, I'd like to have DVDs of a few small films from the 80s that I remember with some nostalgia:

Four Friends (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082404/) - Directed by Arthur Penn (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0671957/) and written by Steve Tesich (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0856270/) (who also wrote Breaking Away (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078902/), among others). I remember liking this film but thinking that it was just a little too melodramatic. I'd like to see it again for the over-the-top wedding scene, if nothing else.
Smooth Talk (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090037/) - An early role for Laura Dern (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000368/) and possibly the creepiest part ever played by Treat Williams (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001852/). I like ambiguous endings and the little denouement at the end with Dern and Elizabeth Berridge (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000931/) just twists the whole movie around. Luckily, this one is due out on DVD this December.
Liquid Sky (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085852/) - It's goofy, pretentious and it tries too hard to be shocking, but I'd certainly buy a reasonably priced DVD to see it again (but I'm not willing to fork out $150 for a used copy). And while I'm wishing, how about releasing the soundtrack from The Shining (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/) on CD? Krzysztof Penderecki and Wendy Carlos on the same CD? Sure, I'd buy one of those.

Damnation Alley. So popular on the used market that beat-up, caseless former rental VHS copies consistently fetch $50+ on ebay and the likes. Sure, it's a goofy post-apocalyptic romp, but it's got Jan Michael Vincent in it, and that's got to be good for something.

The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. - one of the most creative, interesting, and hilarious television shows I've ever seen. Bruce Campbell is a huge cult figure, so why isn't this available?

Fraggle Rock - arguably the best thing to come out of Hensen's crew, and it remains unavailable.

I opened this thread to post about this. I can't believe it isn't out. I assume it is because it would require two disks to fit the movie on and the studio doesn't think it's worth the release.

"The High and the Mighty" Old John Wayne movie (1954) not currently available on any medium (so far as I know). The Internet Movie Database message board says it will be released sometime this year.

I'm actually surprised at how many rare movies are on DVD, considering how new the format is. Plus, new titles get released every week -- just in the last six months, we've seen (or will soon see): After Hours, Duel, My Father's Glory, Star Wars (well, sorta), D.A.R.Y.L., Ed Wood, Short Cuts, and Testament.

Hopefully we'll soon see these as well:

Au Revoir, Les Enfants
The Butcher Boy
The Decline of Western Civilization II: The Metal Years
Duckman (TV series)
The Earthling
Eddie Murphy: Delirious
Emergency! (TV series)

You can't release a DVD of a movie which was never made.

In all seriousness, I do own that movie on DVD. It originated from Europe. I don't get why Disney won't pull their heads out of their asses and release it here. There's nothing more offensive than what was in some of those On the Front Lines cartoons, and what could be considered offensive could be cleared up with a 2 minute Leonard Maltin intro.

Besides, with the kind of pacing that movie has, most kids these days probably won't even want to watch it unsupervised anyway...

Most Jim Henson TV series are reluctant to be released on DVD. Even the original movies are barebones, and the Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock are only selected episodes.

WKRP in Cincinatti.

The originals would be nice, before they were forced to use generic filler music in place of the real stuff and posters of rock & roll bands were digitally removed from view.

But even the edited versions would be OK since it was the characters and writing that made the show work. Though I would miss scenes like the one where Mr. Carlson walks into the booth to find a seemingly comatose Johnny Fever zoning out to Pink Floyd's Dogs. "Do I hear dogs barking?" "I do..."

It seems that the TV show WKRP succumbed to the soulless corporate mentality that the show tried so very hard to ridicule. RIP, KRP...

Inspired by this thread (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=280744), here are some more small films from the 80s that I'd like to see on DVD: Dead Ringers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094964/) - David Cronenberg (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000343/) directs Jeremy Irons (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000460/). Very creepy (as you might expect with those two involved). One of the worst possible (non-porn) films to see on a first date. But $50 and up for a used copy? No thanks.
The Quiet Earth (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089869/) - An NZ science fiction film with some flaws, but I'll watch almost anything with Bruno Lawrence (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0492649/) in it.
Urgh! A Music War (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138902/) - Remember back when Danny Elfman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000384/) actually played in a band instead of just scoring films? Well, even if you don't, there are early performances by The Police, UB 40, and Echo and the Bunnymen that are worth seeing.
