Where did the term "spaceship" originate from? Just wondering.

A large vessel to carry people and freight is a ship--especially one that is not limited to rails. Such a vessel traveling through space would be a space ship.

The earliest citation, hyphenated as space-ship, was in an early science fiction novel from 1894.

The term was probably invented before the airplane. Otherwise, they might be called spaceplanes.

What's a specimen? An Italian astronaut.

I don't even want to hear about "innuendo."
